It should be fitted in a position where it is easily accessible for cleaning. It is recommended to provide it with a float valve which closes off the vacuum when liquids (milk or water) within the interceptor rises too high, and a self-sealing flap valve on the outlet which automatically opens when the pump is switched off. In accord- ance with the milking system in use, the interceptor should have a minimum capac- ity of at least 15 litres but preferably more. The vacuum regulator The vacuum regulator is the brain of the entire machine milking system and should automatically maintain a steady, desired vacuum level. The regulator may be operated by either a spring, weight or diaphragm. The regulator is pre-set at the desired vacuum level, so when the vacuum in the plant increases above the pre-set level, atmospheric air is admitted into the system until the required vacuum is reached. Introduction Most modern milking systems are cleaned using air injected CIP systems. Cleaning and disinfection is accomplished by a combination of physical, thermal and chemical processes. The circulation of sufficient volume of cleaning solutions at sufficient velocity and temperature is required to adequately clean milk contact surfaces. Failure of CIP systems often results from inadequate velocity or contact time of the cleaning solution. A small amount of residual soil can facilitate bacterial attachment, survival and growth. If not inactivated or removed during cleaning, remaining bacteria may eventually detach and contaminate the milk supply. This may affect the quality and, if pathogens are present, the safety of the milk. Current methods for clean-ability assessment of CIP treated milking systems employ microbiological tests (standard plate count). There are several limitations to the use of these tests. First, they require several days to obtain results, and second, it is difficult to locate the source of the cleaning failure. Cleaning problems are generally detected by elevated bacterial counts in the product after many soiling/cleaning cycles. When this occurs, bacterial contamination is likely to have had effect on a large volume of product. The development of rapid and reliable methods to assess cleaning will improve the design, installation and performance of cleaning systems and thereby improve milk product quality and safety.

Specifically, the effective cleaning and sanitizing of milking system is essential to ensure the dairy product quality and safety. To achieve that, the cleaning and sanitizing of milking system on a dairy farm after the milking event are completed using a highly automated procedure referred as “cleaning-in-place (CIP)”. The chemicals used in the milking system CIP, however, are potentially hazardous to the farmers and the environment. Therefore, novel approaches are needed to solve this problem and further investigate the approaches to optimize the CIP process including investigation of the mechanism of milking system CIP.

Libby Salmon Abstract Background: Increased global demand for imported breast milk substitutes (infant formula, follow-on formula and toddler milks) in Asia, particularly China, and food safety recalls have led to shortages of these products in high income countries. At the same time, commodification and trade of expressed breast milk have fuelled debate about its regulation, cost and distribution. In many economies suboptimal rates of breastfeeding continue to be perpetuated, at least partially, because of a failure to recognise the time, labour and opportunity costs of breast milk production. To date, these issues have not figured prominently in discussions of food security. Policy responses have been piecemeal and reveal conflicts between promotion and protection of breastfeeding and a deregulated trade environment that facilitates the marketing and consumption of breast milk substitutes. Discussion: The elements of food security are the availability, accessibility, utilization and stability of supply of nutritionally appropriate and acceptable quantities of food. These concepts have been applied to food sources for infants and young children: breastfeeding, shared breast milk and breast milk substitutes, in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO)/United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) guidelines on infant feeding. A preliminary analysis indicates that a food security framework may be used to respond appropriately to the human rights, ethical, economic and environmental sustainability issues that affect the supply and affordability of different infant foods. Summary: Food security for infants and young children is not possible without high rates of breastfeeding.
