  • HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007
1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

  • After the Rain
After the Rain Dir: Takashi Koizumi, Japan/France, 1999 A review by Shulamit Almog, University of Haifa, Israel After the Rain is Takashi Koizumi's feature film debut, made in 1999, Shoji Ueda and Takao Saito as cinematographers. Akira Kurosawa wrote the screenplay, and Takashi Koizumi, who pays the late Japanese master a tribute in this film, attempted to make a film from Kurosawa's script, as he would have wished. The tribute quality of the film manifests itself most eminently when one puts After the Rain alongside Rashomon, Kurosawa's 1950 masterpiece, that is still possibly the best known Japanese film outside Japan. On the face of it, there is not much in common between the sombre, infinitely intriguing Rashomon and the delightful, lighthearted and light flooded After the Rain. In actual fact, there is a delicate web of links and connections between those two articulations, that correspond with each other. In both films most characters participate in several forms of judging, formal and informal, external and internal. They all judge and are being judged, cast adjudication and are subjected to it. In Rashomon a formal trial is depicted, alongside the internal ones. In After the Rain there is no formal trial, but all characters involved perform continuous ethical judgments of themselves and others. Rashomon begins in rain and ends with rain. Three people, who find shelter from the rain under the Rashomon gate, engage in narration. Two crimes -- a murder of a Samurai and rape of his wife -- are presented four times, in four different ways. The people at the gate renarrate the story of the formal judgment, where the different versions were first narrated, and, while doing so, judge the narrators, the characters of the narrative, and themselves.

  • CMSI Journey to the Academy Awards -- Race and Gender in a Decade of Documentary 2008-2017 (2-20-17)
! Journey to the Academy Awards: A Decade of Race & Gender in Oscar-Shortlisted Documentaries (2008-2017) PRELIMINARY KEY FINDINGS Caty Borum Chattoo, Nesima Aberra, Michele Alexander, Chandler Green1 February 2017 In the Best Documentary Feature category of the Academy Awards, 2017 is a year of firsts. For the first time, four of the five Oscar-nominated documentary directors in the category are people of color (Roger Ross Williams, for Life, Animated; Ezra Edelman, for O.J.: Made in America; Ava DuVernay, for 13th; and Raoul Peck, for I Am Not Your Negro). In fact, 2017 reveals the largest percentage of Oscar-shortlisted documentary directors of color over at least the past decade. Almost a third (29%) of this year’s 17 credited Oscar-shortlisted documentary directors (in the Best Documentary Feature category) are people of color, up from 18 percent in 2016, none in 2015, and 17 percent in 2014. The percentage of recognized women documentary directors, while an increase from last year (24 percent of recognized shortlisted directors in 2017 are women, compared to 18 percent in 2016), remains at relatively the same low level of recognition over the past decade. In 2016, as a response to widespread criticism and negative media coverage, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences welcomed a record number of new members to become part of the voting class to bestow Academy Awards: 683 film professionals (46 percent women, 41 percent people of color) were invited in.2 According to the Academy, prior to this new 2016 class, its membership was 92 percent white and 75 percent male.3 To represent the documentary category, 42 new documentary creative professionals (directors and producers) were invited as new members.

  • Opening Remarks: Hacking and Digital Dissidence
Chapter 1 Opening Remarks: Hacking and Digital Dissidence 1.1 Using Computers for the Pursuit of Political and Social Changes and for the Bene fi t of All Mankind The concrete possibility of using all the various types of technologies available to mankind for the speci fi c purposes of networking, of contributing to political and social changes and of contrasting oppressive dictatorships, and even authority in general, has always been, since the very fi rst activities of university hackers 1 in California during the 1960s, a singularly fascinating and often inspiring issue. 2 1 In this book I will use the term “hacker” exclusively to indicate subjects with great computer skills, or dedicated to a creative use of technology, without criminal intentions. To indicate crimi- nal activities carried out with the help of the computer, or against a computer system, I will use the expression “computer criminals”. For a preliminary historical overview of hacking and the fi rst Internet projects see, inter alia , Rosenzweig’s essay concerning “wizards, bureaucrats, warriors and hackers” (Rosenzweig 1998 ) . The author outlines how the profound and complex development of the Internet cannot be divorced from the idiosyncratic and personal visions of those scientists and bureaucrats whose sweat and dedication launched the project, and made it real. He identi fi es those hackers as originating from three different frameworks: (i) from the social history of the fi eld of computer science, (ii) from the Cold War scienti fi c and technical apparatus, which took advantage of massive government funding for computers and networking as tools for fi ghting nuclear and conventional wars, and (iii) from the countercultural radicalism that sought to redirect technology toward a more decentralized, and non-hierarchical, vision of society (Rosenzweig 1998 : 1552).

  • The Robot Historian and the Internet 1. Manuel Castells's Internet Galaxy
Notes Introduction: The Robot Historian and the Internet 1. Manuel Castells’s Internet Galaxy and Lev Manovich’s The Language of New Media both provide very useful historical outlines of the Internet up to the point of their publications. Castells relies on Janet Abbate’s Inventing the Internet (MIT Press, 2000) and John Naughton’s A Brief History of the Future (Overlook, 2001). I also use Johnny Ryan’s A History of the Internet and the Digital Future (New York: ReaktionBook, 2010) as well as J. P. Moschovitis et al.’s History of the Internet: Chronology, 1843 to the Present (Denver: ABC-CLIO, 1999). 2. A robot historian in 2050 might look back at 2014 as the end of Web 2.0 and the beginning of a Wearable Computing and Internet of Everything Era brought on by technologies such as Google Glass, the Pebble Watch, the Oculus Rift (not to mention the specter of a possible future quantum computer). 3. While I use the key McLuhan texts, The Medium Is the Massage (Random House, 1967) and Understanding Media (Sphere Books, 1967), my clearest comprehension of the concepts comes from an interview he did with Playboy in 1969, found in Understanding Me: Lectures and Interviews. (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2003). 4. The “Y2K bug” lying in wait was the domino effect of older com- puter systems being date programmed with only two digits, instead of four (the “19” prefix implied) to indicate the year; therefore, a com- puter with this bug would go from “99” back down to “00” and the computer would think it was January 1, 1900.
