Governor Island MARINE RESERVE
VISITING RESERVES Governor Island MARINE RESERVE Governor Island Marine Reserve, with its spectacular underwater scenery, is recognised as one of the best temperate diving locations in Australia. The marine reserve includes Governor Island and all waters and other islands within a 400m diameter semi-circle from the eastern shoreline of Governor Island (refer map). The entire marine reserve is a fully protected ‘no-take’ area. Fishing and other extractive activities are prohibited. Yellow zoanthids adorn granite boulder walls in the marine reserve. These flower-like animals use their tentacles to catch tiny food particles drifting past in the current. A Showy Lily (Lilium Formosanum) on the Move?
7 produced in its turn a mature form rosette with only 5 leaves a much smaller plant than that produced by the 5 mm tuber at the beginning of the study. This was in fact its last gasp. No new tuber formed and the plant died. The pollination mechanism is insect attractive but on some sites notably the western and southern coastal aspects of the Waitakere Ranges the plants are subjected to severe wind buffeting which is more than enough to shake the pollinia loose and deposit some grains on the stigma. Cameron In mid February 1986 on the Coromandel Peninsula I was struck by the showy roadside and sand dune weed Formosa lily (Lilium formosanum). It was present from the eastern end of the Kopu Hikuai Road north to Cooks Beach (just south of Whitianga) being more common north of Tairua. Along the highway it was growing in roadside gravel usually in small groups of separate plants many kilometres apart. On the sand dunes at Cooks and Hotwater Beaches the lilies were locally abundant and often close together. Flowering stems were about 0.5 m tall (sand dune plants up to 1 m) and had l 2 (4) horizontally held slender funnel shaped flowers 14 18 cm long; making it one of N.Z.s longest flowered wild plants. -

We went up to Eshaness lighthouse and then took a walk around the coastline. We explored the Grind o da Navir and we had to find out how it was formed. Box 30 368, Lower Hutt SUMMARY The Hahei Islands consist of two main islands, Mahurangi and Motueka (or Motu Iki), and several small islets. Being close to the mainland they have considerable potential as scenic and/or wildlife reserves. Tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) may be present on one island. INTRODUCTION The Hahei Islands, located about 10km east of Whitianga and within 2km of the mainland (Fig. 1), have received little attention from the scientific community. They are, however, of considerable historical interest as Captain Cook landed on one of the smaller islands in 1769 and briefly described its small pa (Beaglehole 1955, p.202). The largest island, Mahurangi (Fig. 2), has recently been gazetted a recreation reserve and included in the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park. As much of the island is presently in grass botanists and ornithologists alike may have a rare opportunity of observing its slow regeneration to native bush, and consequent change in bird life. No detailed surveys of the flora and fauna of the remaining islands have been made, but the marine life has been recorded by scuba divers for many years, and geological and archaeological studies are nearing completion. The Hahei area is becoming increasingly popular for recreational pursuits and it is essential that the islands' wildlife, vegetation and historic sites be preserved for future generations to study and enjoy. BR1LF HISTORY OF THE AREA When Captain Cook visited Mercury Bay in November 1769 he observed that the local Maori inhabitants were poor "to the highest degree", they had no plantations, many were without houses, and others resided on small fortified islands (Beaglehole, 1955, pp.192-203).
