Leisa McCartney edited the final report, Luong Tran compiled the maps and Allyson Crimp designed the final report About the Victorian Gas Program The Victorian Gas Program (VGP) is a comprehensive science-led program, incorporating geoscientific and environmental research to assess the risks, benefits and impacts of potential onshore conventional gas exploration and production. The program is also investigating the potential for further discoveries of onshore conventional and offshore gas in the Otway and Gippsland geological basins and assessing the feasibility of additional onshore underground gas storage in depleted reservoirs around the Port Campbell area. The VGP includes an extensive, proactive and phased community and stakeholder engagement program, through which the results of the scientific studies are being communicated.     The legal outcomes the Gunditjmara achieved in the 1980s are often overlooked in the history of land rights and native title in Australia. The High Court Onus v Alcoa case and the subsequent settlement negotiated with the State of Victoria, sit alongside other well known bench marks in our land rights history, including the Gurindji strike (also known as the Wave Hill Walk-Off) and land claim that led to the development of land rights legislation in the Northern Territory. This publication links the experiences in the 1980s with the Gunditjmara’s present day recognition of native title, and considers the possibilities and limitations of native title within the broader context of land justice. Smith and R.J. Nathan Sinclair Knight Merz Executive Summary The Victorian Water Quality Monitoring Network (VWQMN) consists of around 280 stations located throughout Victoria. A range of water quality indicators are measured at these sites and data has been measured for up to 25 years at approximately monthly intervals. While this data set represents a substantial body of information, to date there has been no systematic and consistent analysis of the data that provides an assessment of the temporal and spatial variation of the indicators. Such analysis can provide valuable information regarding the impacts of past management practices on catchment processes, the impact of land management practices and interventions, and the likely direction of future water quality changes. The scope of this report is to present the nature and significance of time trends in water quality data recorded at VWQMN sites within the region controlled by the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority. Only stations with records greater than ten years were used, and the indicators considered were pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), total phosphorus and total nitrogen.

    Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and Australia Felix Rod Bird Red Gum Festival, Cavendish 14 April 2018 1 Cavendish Red Gum Festival (13-15 April 2018) Anthony Watt, a committee member for the festival, asked me if I would provide an introduction to the forum by presenting Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and his exploration of Australia Felix. Anthony expressed a wish for me to deal with the River Red Gum in SW Victoria and the Major’s journey of exploration in 1836. He was clearly also interested in a theatrical presentation, assuring me that he would be able to borrow a suitable costume for the occasion from the Harrow Sound and Light Show! This short discourse is not the theatrical performance at Cavendish on the 14th of April 2018, where a major part was an impression of the good Major through a variety of sources, including his second-in- command Granville Stapylton, and the presentation of images of some of our majestic River Red Gum giants. It is a rather more sober (but hardly in-depth) presentation of the man and his explorations in eastern Australia – it is simply an introduction to the man and the legend for those who know little of him and his accomplishments. I have also presented here photographs of many of the plants that Mitchell saw and collected on his journey through south-west Victoria. Lastly, in this article I draw attention to the nature of the ‘soft’ and wet landscapes through which Mitchell’s bullocks toiled with their heavy drays – and how that has changed following settlement.
