MALE BONDING: A QUEER ANALYSIS OF THE JAMES BOND CANON by Grant C. Hester A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, FL May 2019 Copyright 2019 by Grant C. Hester ii MALE BONDING: A QUEER ANALYSIS OF THE JAMES BOND CANON by Grant C. Hester This dissertation was prepared under the direction of the candidate's dissertation advisor, Dr. Jane Caputi, Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Communication, and Multimedia and has been approved by the members of his supervisory committee. It was submitted to the faculty of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and was accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Khaled Sobhan, Ph.D. Interim Dean, Graduate College iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Jane Caputi for guiding me through this process. She was truly there from this paper’s incubation as it was in her Sex, Violence, and Hollywood class where the idea that James Bond could be repressing his homosexuality first revealed itself to me. She encouraged the exploration and was an unbelievable sounding board every step to fruition. Stephen Charbonneau has also been an invaluable resource. Frankly, he changed the way I look at film. His door has always been open and he has given honest feedback and good advice. Oliver Buckton possesses a knowledge of James Bond that is unparalleled. I marvel at how he retains such information.

Ben Mankiewicz Tarana Burke Danny Trejo Quentin Tarantino The Luminary The Impact Award The Visionary The Distinguished Award Award Storyteller Award 2019 TWELFTH ANNUAL Ann-Margret The Legend Award NATIONAL ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALISM AWARDS LOS ANGELES PRESS CLUB 12TH ANNUAL National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards A Letter From the Press Club President Good evening and welcome to the 12th annual National Arts & Entertain- ment Journalism Awards. Think about how much the entertainment industry has changed since the Press Club introduced these awards in 2008. Arnold Schwarzenegger was our governor, not a Terminator. Netflix sent you DVDs in the mail. The iPhone was one year old. Fast forward to today and the explosion of technology and content that is changing our lives and keeping journalists busy across the globe. Entertainment journalism has changed as well, with all of us taking a much harder look at how societal issues influence Hollywood, from workplace equality and diversity to coverage of political events, the impact of social media and U.S.-China rela- tions. Your Press Club has thrived amid all this. Participation is way up, with more Chris Palmeri than 600 dues-paying members. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards have grown and changed as well. Tonight we’re in a ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, but in 2008 the awards took place in the Steve Allen Theater, the Press Club’s old home in East Hollywood. That building has since been torn down. Our first event in 2008 featured a cocktail party with no host and only 111 entries in the competition.

  • Writer and Actor Mark Gatiss, Star of the BBC Drama Sherlock, Has Penned the Foreword to Splendid Books’ Forthcoming Title Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan
Writer and actor Mark Gatiss, star of the BBC drama Sherlock, has penned the foreword to Splendid Books’ forthcoming title Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan. “We are absolutely delighted that Mark Gatiss, who is a huge Bond fan, has written a superbly witty and incisive foreword,” says Shoba Vazirani, Editorial Director at Splendid Books. “Author Mark O’Connell has penned a very funny, interesting and poignant book in Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan and Mark Gatiss’ foreword complements it perfectly.” In addition, former Bond girl Maud Adams - who starred with Roger Moore in the 007 film Octopussy - has contributed an afterword to the book. “To have Mark Gatiss and Maud Adams flanking the shoulders of Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan is a true honour,” says Mark O’Connell. Published by Splendid Books, Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan is from the offbeat vantage point of a gay teenager whose grandfather was chauffeur to legendary 007 producer Cubby Broccoli. It is a love-letter to James Bond, Duran Duran title songs and bolting down your tea quick enough to watch Roger Moore falling out of a plane without a parachute. Mark Gatiss is one of the co-creators and stars of award-winning Sherlock, a regular contributor on Doctor Who, starred in and co-wrote The League of Gentlemen and is the cape-twirling force behind BBC Four’s A History of Horror and its imminent bloody sequel. Maud Adams starred in cult favourites Rollerball and Tattoo, Arthur Miller’s Playing For Time, as well as 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun and the title role in 1983’s Octopussy.

  • INTERVIEW INFORMATION: Person: John Glen, Five-Time Bond Film Director and Much More
INTERVIEW INFORMATION: Person: John Glen, five-time Bond film director and much more... Location: London, U.K. Date: 2007- 09-20 Interviewer: Anders Frejdh, Sweden and Marie-France Vienne, Belgium About your role as 2nd Unit Director and Director in THE BOND FILMS How did you become involved in ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE in the first place? I first met Peter Hunt in1947 whilst a junior editor at London Films Shepperton. Peter was also an assistant editor. Unknown to me Peter had watched my career unfold as an editor and second unit director on TV series such as DANGER MAN. When he needed a director to film the bob run sequence in Switzerland he contacted me and managed to convince Harry and Cubby that I was the man for the job. How did you approach the role of director for FOR YOUR EYES ONLY once they choose you? Did you read any of the Fleming novels? I was a keen Fleming fan and had read most of his novels. The short story of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY had made a lasting impression on me and I found it very easy to develop together with Michael Wilson and Dick Maibaum. Could you tell us the discussion you had with Roger Moore as he firstly refused the idea of kicking Locque’s car over the edge in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY? I felt that this was a particularly pivotal scene in the movie. Roger was concerned about his image seen kicking a man to his death. Forever the professional Roger bowed to the director and agreed to shoot the scene as written although I did an alternative version where the weight of the dove emblem tipped the balance on the car.

Bond Women’s Extensions, Spaces and Places Abstract: The article aims to depict James Bond films in relation to Bond woman's presence, through Bond’s ‘male gaze’ within the spatial context of a confined environment, extended space, or a stretched milieu, in order to designate the transformations with respect to representations of woman in popular culture in general. Aside from its worldwide popularity James Bond movies from 1962 to 2012 might be identified as a media archaeology site. In James Bond movies architecture and design are the main actors as protagonists/antagonists. In order to reveal the parallel between sociological and technological transformations and those of the woman representations in popular culture, purposive sampling method was employed regarding Bond woman’s, the Establishment women's and the 'Bond Woman's spatial representations.
