It is perfectly situated to offer the best of country living and a great base from which to explore nearby market towns and all that North Norfolk has to offer. There are good road and railway links to Norwich and to the airport. Cottage Character This is a cottage with character, originally built as two cottages in 1870, the property was first modernised into one property in the 1970s and in the 1990s some extensions were made in the style of the time. Seeing past the dated finish the current owner fell in love with the welcoming ambience of the cottage, jumping at the chance to fulfil its potential and bring it back to its best: “I’ve renovated properties before but this is the biggest job I’ve ever undertaken. It didn’t even have central heating. It took a few years to get every detail just right and it’s been a joy to live here ever since,” she smiles. Works included opening the kitchen into one larger room with a breakfast area, replacing the bathroom, fully repointing the brickwork in lime and mortar and restoring period features to ensure the finishing touches are in keeping with the age of the property. It’s also been finished with a great sense of style and decorated throughout in soft, neutral colours that allow the character to take centre stage. An Uplifting Place To Be It’s an uplifting place to be - One of the great things is that where some cottages are lacking in light, this one has it in abundance. It’s bright and fresh throughout whilst still retaining its cosy feel. In summer you can escape the heat as it remains cool, while in winter you can tuck yourself away cosily in front of one of the log burners. The dining room is lovely for entertaining and the sitting room wonderfully snug on cold winter evenings. The owner particularly loves the light and airy kitchen with its sociable open plan feel. Another highlight is the boot room: “There’s heaps of storage in there so you can keep everything tidy. If you have a dog, you can pop them in there after a walk and stop muddy footprints trailing through the house,” she laughs. Upstairs, the bedrooms have lovely green views over fields and woodland. City And Country, Broads And Beach The two brick outbuildings offer further potential, perhaps as a home office, artists’ studio or even to be converted for holiday rental, while the vegetable beds, fruit cage and three greenhouses are a gardener’s delight. You can sit and enjoy the views over the fields and to the church, or perhaps watch the wildlife all around you. The owner sees buzzards, kestrels, hedgehogs and so much more. “It’s very peaceful here and incredibly relaxing,” she confirms. Two stables and a paddock offer equestrian potential and there’s certainly plenty going on in this area for anyone who rides. In fact, the community here has been a real highlight for the owner and she’s found it easy to make friends and put down roots. The village benefits from an active parish council and a highly regarded school. You’re close to the Broads here (many locals own boats), as well as having easy access to the glorious North Norfolk coast. Market towns such as Aylsham are vibrant and attractive, plus Norwich itself is only a short drive from your door. Printed On Your Doorstep… Located close to the Norfolk coast, Swanton Abbott is a short distance away from the market towns of Aylsham and North Walsham which offer a large variety of amenities including Waitrose and Lidl, Sainsbury and Tesco supermarkets. North Walsham offers direct rail connections to Norwich. The property is also within easy reach of the Norfolk Broads where there is an abundance of water activities and wildlife. Mundesley beach is 8 miles away and boasts a beautiful blue flag beach where seals are often spotted close to the shore. There are also unique areas of unspoilt natural beauty, ideal for walking, cycling, bird watching and fishing and of course the famous East Ruston gardens. How Far Is It To… Cromer is approximately 13 miles away and is often hailed as one of Norfolk’s most attractive seaside resorts. It is renowned for crab fishing and whilst maintaining its Victorian charm, the town is an important residential, administrative and service centre for the growing population of North Norfolk. The Cathedral City of Norwich (12 miles) has a myriad of cultural and leisure facilities as well as a main line rail link to London Liverpool Street and an international airport. Directions Leave Norwich heading north on the B1150 Coltishall Rd. After leaving Coltishall take the signs for Swanton Abbott. The property is situated within a small hamlet called The Hill to the outskirts of Swanton Abbott. The property will be clearly signposted with a Fine and Country For Sale Board. • The Church, the Village and Its People, 1400-1500
Wighton: the church, the village and its people, 1400-1500 Nicholas Andrew Trend Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies (AMA) September 2017 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. All Saints, Wighton from the east 2 Abstract When, how, by whom and in what circumstances were Norfolk’s medieval churches rebuilt in the long fifteenth century? Despite the importance of this extraordinary and historic burst of architectural creativity, the answers to these key questions have long proved elusive. A perceived lack of archaeological and documentary evidence has left historians largely in the dark. This thesis addresses the gap in our knowledge by focusing on a single church and village - All Saints in Wighton, near the north coast of the county. The choice of such an apparently narrow subject has allowed a sustained and intense focus on both the fabric of the building and the scattered, partial evidence which survives in the archives. And while the focus has been narrow, the approach taken has been broad and creative. It has included an analysis of masons’ marks, the counting of arch voussoirs, an unusually wide, eclectic and exhaustive collation and investigation of surviving documents, together with detailed comparisons with other churches in the vicinity. As such it aims to offer a new model for architectural and social historical research and - hopefully - it will be regarded as a success.
