Page 2 From The Pastor’s Desk Enrollment Mass of the Brown Scapular Of Our Lady of Mount Carmel When the clouds of temptation overshadow the day May the light of Mount Carmel shine down on my way; When the long road is ending, may I go to rest With Mary's brown Scapular over my breast. On Tuesday, July 16th at our daily Masses, 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM we will celebrate in Honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and will include within the celebration, an enrollment of the Brown Scapular for those who would like to do so (Scapulars will be provided). Why is this enrollment so significant in the life of a Christian? The Brown Scapular is a devotion to Mary under her title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is worn as a sign of love and devotion for the Mother of God. The Carmelite Order, to which the Scapular belongs, originated on Mt. Carmel in the Holy Land and the Scapular is itself a reflection in miniature of the habit (scapular: a sleeveless outer garment falling from the shoulders) which the monks wear as a sign of their vocation and devotion. The Scapular was presented by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock, the Father General of the Carmelite Order, on July 16, 1251. He was an English hermit. He received the name "stock" because he lived in the hollowed trunk or stock of a tree. In time he became a Carmelite and later the Father General of the order. He led the order during a time of struggle. The Carmelites originally were hermits on Mount Carmel, near Nazareth in the Holy Land. When they migrated to Europe, in this case England, some saw great wisdom in no longer being hermits and instead becoming friars who would work among the people. St. Simon guided them through this state of transition. In the year 1251 a most momentous vision took place. St. Simon Stock, newly transplanted to England, prayed earnestly to Our Lady for help. Then: To him appeared the Blessed Virgin with a multitude of angels, holding the Scapular of the order in her blessed hands. Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the Carmelites with the following promise, saying: Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace. Another important aspect of wearing the Scapular is the Sabbatine Privilege. This concerns a promise made by Our Lady to Pope John XXII. In a papal letter he issued, he recounted a vision that he had had. He stated that the Blessed Virgin had said to him in this vision, concerning those who wear the Brown Scapular: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting." According to Church tradition, there are three conditions necessary to participate in this Privilege and share in the other spiritual benefits of the Scapular: wear the Brown Scapular, observe chastity according to your state in life, and pray the Rosary. In addition to the Sabbatine Privilege, enrollment in the Brown Scapular also makes a per- son part of the Carmelite family throughout the world. They therefore, share in all of the prayers and good works of the Carmelite Orders. Participation in the Carmelite family also, of course, places you in a special relationship with the Carmelite saints, especially St. Elijah, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux, and, most importantly, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Once enrolled, the enrollment is for life and need not be repeated. Anyone, adult or infant, who has not previ- ously been enrolled, may be enrolled in the Brown Scapular. The Brown Scapular is one more precious reminder of our being active members in the Body of Christ. Living our lives of faith in such a way as to bring more honor, more healing, more love to Christ’s Body as a whole and to each member and their own families individually. One more means by which we assist God our Father in answer- ing the prayer “Thy Kingdom Come on earth as it is in Heaven.” By means of this devotion we literally have Heaven and its power draped around our necks and more so over our hearts. Please join us on Tuesday, July 16th at our 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM daily Masses for this great celebration and as always get the word out on the street and invite as many people as you can to attend. • The Brown Scapular Is an Old Carmelite Tradition That Found New Life in the Early 20Th Century with the Fatima Apparitions
The Brown Scapular is an old Carmelite tradition that found new life in the early 20th Century with the Fatima Apparitions. Recently, it has become popular again as Catholics look for some intimate sign to remind them of their commitment to the Faith. On July 16, 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, Our Lady appeared to a Carmelite priest named, St. Simon Stock. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this garment shall not suffer eternal fire.” Later, the Church extended this privilege to all who wish to be invested and perpetually wear it as a sign of membership in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular. The tradition expanded to include the Sabbatine Privilege, in which there is a pious legend of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel promising to shorten one’s stay in purgatory if one should pass from this world still owing some debt of punishment. It is said she will retrieve one’s soul from purgatory on the Saturday after death. The promise is not mere legend but based on certain conditions that must be fulfilled which, if devoutly observed, will assist one in religious and spiritual perfection: 1. One must be invested in the Brown Scapular by a priest according to the Roman Ritual and wear it continuously. (Once a priest invests one with the Brown Scapular, it is not necessary to have replacement scapulars blessed.) 2. Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).

THE LEGEND OF ST SIMON STOCK AND THE SCAPULAR DEVOTION From the first to the second naïveté Paul Ricoeur (d. 2005) “first naïveté” wonder critical reflection rejection; or “second naïveté” a new wonder an example: the creation story in Genesis First naïveté: The traditional story Simon Stock, 1165-1265 At 12 he began to live as a hermit in the hollow trunk of an oak, became an itinerant preacher, entered the Carmelite Order, and spent several years on Mt Carmel. In 1247 he was elected the sixth prior general of the Carmelites. On Sunday 16 July 1251 the Blessed Virgin appeared to Simon in Cambridge, England. In prayer he asked for some privilege for his Order, offering the prayer Flos Carmeli. The Virgin appeared surrounded by a multitude of angels and bearing the scapular of the order in her blessed hands, saying: “May this be to you and to all the Carmelites a pledge, that whoever dies wearing it will not suffer eternal fire, that is, wearing this, he will be saved.” The Sabbatine Privilege The Virgin Mary appeared also to Pope John XXII, as recorded in his Bull Sacratissimo uti culmine of 3 March 1322, and promised that those who wear the scapular and fulfill two other conditions (chastity according to their state of life, and the daily recitation of the Little Office of Our Lady) will be freed from Purgatory on the first Saturday after death. Scapular miracles 1. Another Scapular miracle took place in 1845. In the late summer of that year, the English ship, King of the Ocean,* on its way to Australia found itself in the middle of a hurricane.

Scapular By Jason Paul Bourgeois, Ph.D., Librarian-Theologian/Assistant Professor Marian Library-International Marian Research Institute, University of Dayton A scapular is a sacramental garment of the Catholic church, usually consisting of two pieces of sewn cloth attached by strings and worn over the shoulders with one piece hanging over the chest and the other hanging over the back. The scapular was originally a component of some religious habits, the set of garments worn by members of a religious order, but later a smaller version (usually one inch by two inches) began to be worn under the clothes by laypersons who wished to associate with a particular religious order. The most famous scapular is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (q.v.) The Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (commonly referred to as Carmelites) were originally founded as an order of hermits that lived together on Mount Carmel in Israel in the early 1200s.

Carmel “What’s that thing you’re always wearing?” And so began another discussion of the Brown Scapular that hangs around my neck. This time it was while visiting New Orleans with my sister. A city suffused with Catholicism plus voodoo shops, gris-gris and the like was, perhaps, the perfect place to explain the two small pieces of brown wool on a cord that I always wear. The Brown Scapular is neither a good luck charm, talisman, amulet nor gris-gris. It is a sacramental; a symbol of devotion and yoke of obedience to Our Lady of Mount Carmel whose feast we celebrate on July 16. Simply put, in the words of the always humorously orthodox John Zmirak, the Brown Scapular is “a sleek and minimalist version of the Carmelite habit.” 1.

IIISTORICAL CONCRETIZATIONS OF THE MARIAN CHARISM M,lru,lx Pnoru.r or Cr,Assrcnr, Onpuns Introduction In 1839, when Pere Lacordaire wanted to reestablish the Dominican Order in France, he was faced with the restrictions put in place by the French Rev- olution. In his letter to the French people, Pere Lacordaire pointed out that after trees are cut down, new shoots spring from the stumps and additional trees rise from buried seeds. His analogy was that religious life cannot be sup- pressed for long but will reemerge from new shoots and buried seeds, as he put it, "Oak trees and monks are eternal."l The Holy Spirit has given and continues to give to the Church a marvelous variety of charisms through the founders and foundresses of religious commu- nities. This particular essay focuses on the orders founded before the seven- teenth century, which we will refer to as "classical orders" in deference to their longevity.

  • Our Lady's Garment the Brown Scapular
Our Lady’s Garment The Brown Scapular: A Sign of Salvation and Protection The Brown Scapular, the Most Powerful Sacramental “Whosoever dies clothed in this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” - words of Our Lady to Saint Simon Stock (See the full promise on page 16) Such is the extraordinary promise Our Lady makes to those who wear Her Brown Scapular. And this wonderful promise makes the Scapular the most powerful sacramental Heaven’s mercy has given us. Who could doubt Our Lady’s promise, or be so foolish as not to wear, with profoundest gratitude and reverence, this abbreviated form of the Carmelite Mantle? This garment of grace — two simple pieces of brown wool worn over the shoulders — is a tangible sign of the Blessed Mother´s love and protection for Her devotees. We should kiss the Scapular devoutly when rising in the morning, and every time we put on a new Scapular to replace one that is worn or damaged. For this gesture of reverence, we receive an indulgence of 500 days, and we are also reminded to ask Our Lady: “Preserve me this day from sin and the occasions of sin.” Wearing the Scapular, a Form of Consecration Wearing Mary´s Scapular is a way to consecrate ourselves to Her service. Consecration sets apart a person or thing for a sacred purpose. Every Catholic should be consecrated to Mary. Our Lady of Fatima, on October 13th, 1917, held the Brown Scapular in Her hand, making the three child seers, Lucy, Jacinta and Francisco, understand that She wants all of us to wear the Scapular.
