ROSARY RALLY TODAY

Please join us for the July Holy Rally in Honor of Our Lady of Fatima—which will be held today Sunday July 16th from 3 pm to 4:15 pm at the Oratory of Old St. Patrick. July marks the 100th anniversary of the third of Our Blessed Mother’s six apparitions to the 3 young chil- dren in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. We will pray the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries of the Holy Rosary followed by Benediction and the opportunity for attendees to enroll in the Brown .

THE BROWN SCAPULAR OF

The Scapular was presented by Our Lady to St. , the Father General of the Carmelite Order, on , 1251. St. Simon’s story is very interesting. He was an English and lived in the hollow of a tree. He received the name "stock" because he lived in the hollowed trunk or stock of a tree. In time he became a Carmelite and later the Father General of the order. He led the order during a time of struggle. The originally were on Mount Carmel, near Nazareth in the Holy Land. When they migrated to Europe, in this case , some saw great wisdom in no longer being hermits and instead becoming who would work among the people. St. Simon guided them through this state of transition. In the year 1251 a most momentous vision took place. St. Simon Stock, newly transplanted to England, prayed earnestly to Our Lady for help. Then: To him appeared the Blessed Virgin with a multitude of angels, holding the Scapular of the order in her blessed hands … Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the Carmelites with the following promise, saying : Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire .... It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace. Another important aspect of wearing the Scapular is the . This concerns a promise made by Our Lady to John XXII. In a papal letter he issued, he recounted a vision that he had had. He stated that the Blessed Virgin had said to him in this vision, con- cerningthose who wear the Brown Scapular: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting."

3 Excerpts from a sermon by St. from the Roman Breviary

Bk. vi. on Luke ix

After that woman, who is a type of the Church, was healed of the issue of blood Luke viii. 43-48; the Lord had sent His disciples to preach the kingdom of God ix. 2. His heavenly tenderness gave food. But consider who they were unto whom He gave it. He gave it not to such as dwell at ease, not to men in cities, not to such as sit in places of worldly splen- dor, but to men seeking Christ in a desert place. Such as are not given to niceness are they whom Christ receiveth, and unto whom the Word of God speaketh, not of earthly things, but of the kingdom of God . And if any bear in them the running sores of fleshly passion, He healeth them.

And then it came to pass that, as He had healed them that had need of healing, He fed their hunger with ghostly meat. Thus it is that no man taketh Christ's meat, unless he be first healed, and they that are bidden to the supper are first cured by the invitation. The lame receive the power to walk, that they may be able to come; the blind cannot see the door of the house of the Lord, unless light be given them.

Everywhere is preserved the order of the Sacraments. The sinful soul is first healed by the remission of sins, and afterward is filled at the Table of the Lord albeit this multitude now present is of such as do not yet feed on those strong meats, nor pasture their starving spir- its upon the Body and Blood of Christ, as do they of a manlier faith. To use the words of Paul, I have fed you with milk and not with meat, for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 1 Cor. iii. 2. The five loaves are, as it were, your milk; the stronger meat will be the Body of Christ; the more generous cup, the Blood of the Lord
