A BRIEF HISTORY OF GULF COAST MUSIC ASSOCIATION

In 1974, a small group of music teachers met at Margo Minard’s Music Arts Center in Webster to informally share ideas. The group grew, and a decision was made to unite with the world’s largest music organization, the National Federation of Music Clubs. The goals would be to make music an integral part of the community and nation, to encourage American creative musical arts, and to uphold high musical standards through education and organization.

Pam Alexander was the first President, and she applied for national affiliation. Enhanced by music lovers as well as teachers and performers, the club held many fine recitals and programs, often inviting guest artists from the area.

In 1975, a few teachers took students to the District Music Festival in Beaumont, returning determined to form their own Festival in this part of District 8. In 1976, the group’s first Gold Cup Festival was held at the Music Arts Center. Sharon George was the chairman, having just moved from New Orleans where she had assisted in their Festival. About 100 students participated, with three judges. The popularity of the festival has allowed it to grow to over 1200 entrants in 20 years.

With enthusiasm and a “can do” attitude, the club tackled more projects. A scholarship to summer camp was begun in memory of Irma Gilmer’s mother-in-law, a patron of the arts. This became the focus of many fund-raising events.

The club continued to add more activities for the students: Sonatina Festival, Romantic Festival, student recitals, and awards reception. Master classes with such famed pedagogues as Amanda Vick Lethco and Max Camp were held. Besides local activities, members joined in district, state, and national events of the Federation, often as officers and committee chairpersons. They hosted the State Junior Festival, State Senior Convention, and several District conventions.

In 1989, the group added the Maxine Cotton Award for graduating seniors in honor of an extremely well-loved member who devoted much of the last years of her teaching career to working in the organization.

In 2008, a Music Major scholarship was added to our Community Outreach lineup.

Highly respected in the area, the organization has been a source of encouragement to a host of young musicians, many of whom have followed careers in the music field or continued with music as an avocation.

Welcome to the Gold Cup Festival. The Gold Cup Festival is the only national festival in America developed to encourage American teachers to teach the music of American composers. The required pieces listed in the Gold Cup Bulletin are by American composers while the choice piece must be by another composer (American or non-American) in Pre-Primary I – IV and cannot be in the bulletin. In Elementary I – Musically Advanced the choice piece must be by a non-American composer. The Gulf Coast Music Association is proud to be able to sponsor this annual festival in our area. A student’s points are never lost when the family has to relocate to a different city or state. The students may start where they left off at the former location. It is one of the most positively oriented festivals anywhere in the U.S. bringing teachers, students, and parents together working toward a common goal.

The date for this year’s festival is Sat., Mar. 3, 2018 for solos, theory and ensembles. All concertos will be performed on Sat., Mar. 10, 2018. The registration deadline is January 19th. The postmark deadline is Jan. 17, 2018.

Directions on how to fill out the forms are included in the next several pages. If you need duplicate forms you must make the copies. The rating(critique) sheet is provided but you must make copies for your students using the colored paper as required by the different events. Please check your work carefully as a $1.00 fee will be due to Jennifer Key for each mistake made on each form.

Details about the assigned playing times and work assignments will be forthcoming when the forms are turned in. Playing time requests will be honored if at all possible, but are not guaranteed.

All participating teachers have a work assignment. Please make a note on your registration form if you are unable to work during a certain time and you will be assigned a different time.

Due to the size of this festival, details become extremely important. When they are ignored, it creates huge headaches and requires extra work for the chairman and for our record keeper. If you have any questions, please call. Don’t guess. Rules you must understand:

1. If you enter student(s) enters this festival, the teacher must work on the Festival Day. 2. There are no refunds once registrations are received. Please be sure your parents know what day the festival occurs. 3. Teachers who participate in this festival must be present at 3 meetings during the year.

1 FESTIVAL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS TEXAS FEDERATION OF MUSIC CLUBS JUNIOR FESTIVAL (DISTRICT 5, SECTION 1)

Once again, the Gulf Coast Music Association is pleased to sponsor the District Junior Festival. Your child will be part of a festival that continues to attract about 500 young musicians from the Clear Lake area each year. The festival will be held on March3 and 10, 2018 at San Jacinto College located on Spencer Highway in Pasadena. In case of an emergency, there is a scheduled make-up date. There will be a $25 make up registration fee per student. Make-ups are allowed only for family emergencies or a required school event accompanied by either a doctor’s note or a note from the school sponsor.

This festival is not designed to be a competition. Each entrant is rated according to his or her own individual level of advancement and on the results of a private audition before a qualified judge on festival day. Ratings and points are earned as follows: Superior- 5 points; Excellent- 4 points; Very good- 3 points; Good- 2 points; Fair – 1 point. All participants receive a certificate; Superior winners receive a special certificate and Superior + winners receive a blue ribbon with their certificate. When a student accumulates 15 points in a single category, he/she receives a Gold Cup.

Each entrant who earns a rating of Superior in this District Festival is eligible to compete for All- State Musician honors at the annual State Festival. The State Festival is a competition which is usually held in San Marcos in May. More information will follow.

Every effort is made to provide a festival that is fair to all students. However, parents and students should be aware that nervousness, different acoustics and/or pianos, unfamiliar judges, illness, and other factors could affect the performance on festival day. Careful preparation and attention to details in advance of the festival is the best insurance against disappointment. We ask that parents wait in the designated waiting area to alleviate congestion and noise in the halls. Monitors will come to the waiting area to call students by playing time and will take them to the appropriate judging area. Critique sheets will be distributed by the teacher at the lesson following the festival.

The rating given by the adjudicator is final and may not be questioned by the student, teacher, or parent. If you have a complaint, please have your teacher submit it in writing to the Festival chairman no later than 3 days after the end of the festival.

Students MUST bring their music (no copies allowed) and 2 copies of duets (one for performers and one for judge) to the check-in desk on festival day. Measures must be numbered.

Best wishes to your young performer.

Susan Hanks, Chairman Jerri Pippert, Co-Chairman

19 Gold Cup Festival Make-up Policy

In an effort to enable the student to receive points toward earning a Gold Cup a make-up will be provided in special circumstances. There is only one way in which a student cannot earn the points needed to move forward toward a Gold Cup. If the student does not have the music learned and memorized by the day of the festival, the student must wait until the next year to accumulate points.

The chairman and the teachers will help the student in one of 2 ways:

School-related Activity If a student has a school-related activity on the same day as the G.C. audition day that student must let the teacher know as quickly as possible. When the teacher turns in the Registration Form in January do not list the student/s who must miss due to the school related activity. Place that student on the Make-up form with a check for the fees listed. With that make-up form there must be the note from the sponsor verifying that student is participating in the activity. Attach that note to the make-up form. The make-up day will be the very next Saturday after the festival date. It will be at San Jacinto College, Central Campus, in the Music Building.

Illness If a student is too sick to perform the day of the Festival, that student is allowed to play on the make-up day scheduled one week after the Festival Date. A Doctor’s note will be required to qualify.

Mistakes made by the teacher

With now having the help of the almighty computer program which will catch all of our mistakes ( ha, ha) this should help prevent these problems. Teachers will submit the student’s 2 pieces (required and choice) at the same time as the registration form. Jennifer and her assistant will enter this information into the computer and will notify us immediately of the mistake. Hopefully it will be in time to correct the problem. If it is not in in time to play the week after the student will have the option of playing at the Spring Festival (Classical or Romantic) in April. There is only one problem: if a student is going to the state festival they must have their make-up before the end of March.

21 Maxine Cotton Senior Participation Award

This senior participation award is a tribute to Maxine Cotton, who was a very active member of this organization until her prolonged illness and death on September 26, 1988. She served as president during the years 1978 and 1979. She also served as chairperson of many activities. Maxine was responsible for compiling a cookbook of favorite recipes of members with little tidbit musical expressions and teachers’ amusing experiences with their students. This became a fund raiser for the Gold Cup program. Maxine loved this festival because of the goals designed to inspire the average student in achieving his own rating, rather than a competitive type festival. She was always involved in some capacity of promoting and helping to organize the workings of this festival. It is because of her love, encouragement, inspiration and outstanding dedication that this award is presented each year to deserving graduation seniors.
