In 1974, a small group of music teachers met at Margo Minard’s Music Arts Center in Webster to informally share ideas. The group grew, and a decision was made to unite with the world’s largest music organization, the National Federation of Music Clubs. The goals would be to make music an integral part of the community and nation, to encourage American creative musical arts, and to uphold high musical standards through education and organization. Pam Alexander was the first President, and she applied for national affiliation. Enhanced by music lovers as well as teachers and performers, the club held many fine recitals and programs, often inviting guest artists from the area. In 1975, a few teachers took students to the District Music Festival in Beaumont, returning determined to form their own Festival in this part of District 8. In 1976, the group’s first Gold Cup Festival was held at the Music Arts Center. Sharon George was the chairman, having just moved from New Orleans where she had assisted in their Festival. About 100 students participated, with three judges. The popularity of the festival has allowed it to grow to over 1200 entrants in 20 years. With enthusiasm and a “can do” attitude, the club tackled more projects. A scholarship to summer camp was begun in memory of Irma Gilmer’s mother-in-law, a patron of the arts. This became the focus of many fund-raising events. The club continued to add more activities for the students: Sonatina Festival, Romantic Festival, student recitals, and awards reception. Master classes with such famed pedagogues as Amanda Vick Lethco and Max Camp were held. Besides local activities, members joined in district, state, and national events of the Federation, often as officers and committee chairpersons. They hosted the State Junior Festival, State Senior Convention, and several District conventions. In 1989, the group added the Maxine Cotton Award for graduating seniors in honor of an extremely well-loved member who devoted much of the last years of her teaching career to working in the organization. In 2008, a Music Major scholarship was added to our Community Outreach lineup. Highly respected in the area, the organization has been a source of encouragement to a host of young musicians, many of whom have followed careers in the music field or continued with music as an avocation. 3 NATIONAL POSITIONS AND ADDRESSES CONTACT INFORMATION: 1545 W. ROLLINGSTONE.COM (7/16) http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures/hearts-ann-and-nancy-wilson-our-life-in-15- songs-20160712 Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson: Our Life in 15 Songs From "Barracuda" to "Beautiful Broken," sisters revisit four decades of smash hits and thrilling deep cuts It's been more than 40 years since Heart recorded Dreamboat Annie, the debut album that launched the hard-rock act to stardom on the strength of hits like "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You." And the Seattle-area band, still led by sisters Ann (vocals) and Nancy (guitar) Wilson, is showing no signs of slowing down. Their 16th studio album, Beautiful Broken, which collects newly composed songs and re-recorded deep tracks from their past, is out now, and on July 14th, the group embarks on the Rock Hall Three for All tour, headlining sheds across the U.S. with support from fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Cheap Trick. And just what is it that keeps them motivated? "I like playing," Nancy says with a laugh. "Guitar ... on a loud rock stage ... with colored lights. Everything sounds better with colored lights!" According to Ann, that passion – as well as the strong familial bond she shares with Nancy – has been instrumental to sustaining the band. "No matter what else is going on in the other parts of our lives, when we play together we always communicate just the same way we did as when we were little kids," she explains. "And now we're in our sixties – we're like grown-up women.

SONGS FROM THE OTHER SIDE: LISTENING TO PAKISTANI VOICES IN INDIA John Shields Caldwell A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music (Musicology). Chapel Hill 2021 Approved by: Michael Figueroa Jayson Beaster-Jones David Garcia Mark Katz Pavitra Sundar © 2021 John Shields Caldwell ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT John Shields Caldwell: Songs from the Other Side: Listening to Pakistani Voices in India (Under the direction of Michael Figueroa) In this dissertation I investigate how Indian listeners have listened to Pakistani songs and singing voices in the period between the 1970s and the present. Since Indian film music dominates the South Asian cultural landscape, I argue that the movement of Pakistani songs into India is both a form of resistance and a mode of cultural diplomacy. Although the two nations share a common history and an official language, cultural flows between India and Pakistan have been impeded by decades of political enmity and restrictions on trade and travel, such that Pakistani music has generally not been able to find a foothold in the Indian songscape. I chart the few historical moments of exception when Pakistani songs and voices have found particular vectors of transmission by which they have reached Indian listeners. These moments include: the vinyl invasion of the 1970s, when the Indian market for recorded ghazal was dominated by Pakistani artists; two separate periods in the 1980s and 2000s when Pakistani female and male vocalists respectively sang playback in Indian films; the first decade of the new millennium when international Sufi music festivals brought Pakistani singers to India; and the 2010s, when Pakistani artists participated extensively in television music competition shows.
