With 2012 being an Olympic year, the Trojans lost some talented pieces from their 2011 roster. Iskra Angelova ( Bulgaria), Ivana Filipo- vic (Serbia) and Maria Wilgotsson (Sweden) were key contributors o n last year’s Varsity Eight and each has returned to their native country to train for the summer games. Despite the loss, Babraj expects their posi- tions to be filled with hungry and capable replacements. “We lost three members from the Varsity Eight which is a hit to our team, but at the same time opens the door for some of the less expe- rienced athletes from the other boats,” said Babraj. “If they make that step, and it looks like some of them will, our team will progress nicely. “We are still in the process finalizing lineups and the beginning of this season may be a little slower, but if all the pieces come together by Pac- 12’s we should be in full swing.” Last year’s co-captain Dionne Licudine returns to coxswain’s seat along with senior starboard and 2012 co-captain Helen Tinkus to guide USC’s No. 1 boat. The Women of Troy also return strong veteran expe- rience from seniors Magda Janicka, Anna Wierzbowska and All-Ameri- can Lenka Vrecnikova who will be relied upon heavily as she takes over the No. 6 seat vacated by Filipovic.
