The Outkast Class
R. Bradley OutKast Class Syllabus OutKast Course Description and Objectives Pre-requisite: ENGL1102 Preferred Pre-requisites: ENGL2300, AADS1102 In 1995, Atlanta, GA duo OutKast attended the Source Hip Hop Awards where they won the award for Best New Duo. Mostly attended by bi-coastal rappers and hip hop enthusiasts, OutKast was booed off the stage. OutKast member Andre Benjamin, clearly frustrated, emphatically declared what is now known as the rallying cry for young black southerners: “the south got something to say.” For this course, we will use OutKast’s body of work as a case study questioning how we recognize race and identity in the American south after the Civil Rights Movement. Using a variety of post-Civil Rights era texts including film, fiction, criticism, and music, students will interrogate OutKast’s music as the foundation of what the instructor theorizes as “the hip hop south,” the southern black social-cultural landscape in place over the last 25 years. Objectives 1. To develop and utilize a multidisciplinary critical framework to successfully engage with conversations revolving around contemporary identity politics and (southern) popular culture 2. To challenge students to engage with unfamiliar texts, cultural expressions, and language in order to learn how to be socially and culturally sensitive and aware of modes of expression outside of their own experiences. 3. To develop research and writing skills to create and/or improve one’s scholarly voice and others via the following assignments: • Critical Listening Journals • Creative or Critical Final Project **Explicit Content Statement (courtesy of Dr. Treva B. Lindsey)** Over the course of the semester students will Be introduced to texts that may Be explicit in nature (i.e. -

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS & SCIENCES “I THOUGHT ABOUT KILLING YOU”: CONSIDERING THE UTILITY OF RHETORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL CRITICAL APPROACHES TO KANYE WEST’S YE CORY N. STEINLE SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts and Sciences and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Communication Arts and Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Bradford Vivian Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Associate Teaching Professor in Communication Arts & Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT This paper examines the merits of intrinsic and extrinsic critical approaches to hip-hop artifacts. To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Each of these chapters aims to address the concerns of one of three guiding questions: which critical approaches prove most useful to the hip-hop consumer listening to this song? How can and should the listener construct meaning? Are there any improper ways to critique and interpret this song? Chapter 7 discusses the variance in each mode of critical analysis from Chapters 4, 5, & 6. -

GRAMMY U Presents ALBUM REVIEW: KANYE WEST – “MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY” by LESLEY GWAM CONTINUED from MAIN PAGE
GRAMMY U Presents ALBUM REVIEW: KANYE WEST – “MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY” BY LESLEY GWAM CONTINUED FROM MAIN PAGE Anyone who has read my blog (http://hiphopheadmistress.wordpress.com), knows that I absolutely adore Kanye West. So just like any other Yeezy fanatic, I rushed to my nearest music store to purchase My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy on November 22. To be completely honest, I was skeptical about purchasing West’s sixth studio release, because I loathed 808s & Heartbreak (the auto-tune is too much for my senses to handle. I like my rappers to rap, and my singers to sing, unless you’re Queen Latifah and can do both. But this is a discussion for another Wednesday Word). I was quickly won over, however, by his weekly G.O.O.D. Friday releases from kanyewest.com, particularly “Chain Heavy” and “The Joy.” While My Dark Twisted Fantasy does contain a fair amount of auto-tune, it is nevertheless a great album. I must say however, it is imperative to listen to the album multiple times to really grasp Kanye’s vision – a vision that I can’t say I’ve been able to fully comprehend yet. The album opens with “Dark Fantasy,” which serves as an extended album introduction, and features none other than record release date rival, Nicki Minaj as its narrator. The full bodied instrumental kicks in shortly after the one-minute mark, and the grandiose chorus only adds to the melody. While Kanye may have gotten a bit overzealous with the cameo appearances on “All of the Lights,” (the song’s liner notes credit Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Ryan Leslie, Fergie, John Legend, Charlie Wilson, Elton John, Kid Cudi, Elly Johnson and The-Dream with vocal credits), its emphasis on live instruments makes this song a standout number. -
Depictions of Numeracy and Mathematics Within Hip Hop Music
Journal of Mathematics Education © Education for All December 2016, Vol. 9, No. 2, pp. 53-71 Learning from The College Dropout: Depictions of Numeracy and Mathematics within Hip Hop Music Daniel A. Tillman The University of Texas at El Paso, U.S.A. This study analyzed popular Hip Hop music albums (n=6) presenting narratives about Hip Hop musicians achieving success, so as to determine if the messages disseminated in the albums supported or refuted the heuristic notion that teachers and parents tell children: “You need math skills to get a good job.” Selected albums were analyzed, and each was coded for references to mathematics (including numeracy, numbers, or statistics); then coded data was tabulated to determine any patterns in support or refutation of the importance of mathematical skills and abilities to succeed in a Hip Hop career according to the narratives presented within these albums. The discussion and conclusions sections of this paper then examines the consequences of these findings in terms of developing programs and pedagogy that positively impacts minority adolescents’ perceptions of mathematics, and their attitudes toward mathematics-related careers such as the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. Key Words: Minorities and mathematics, Hip Hop music and culture, language of schooling, E-E (entertainment-education, edutainment). The Process Standards created by NCTM (2000) specify the need for maintaining high-quality communication and representation of mathematical ideas in order for students to learn mathematics. Establishing healthy lines of communication often involves the deliberate coordination of multiple representations, showing and demonstrating the same mathematical concepts from different perspectives (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [NCTM], 2000). -
