Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market Sprouts: A Children’s Nutrition Program Forest of Jewels By: Christie Anderson, Market Manager

any of our market patrons know about the Sprouts M program at the Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market. However, with many of the communities in southwest Edmonton growing so quickly, there may be many of you who are not familiar with Sprouts! Here’s a look at our flagship children’s nutrition program, Sprouts! Sprouts is a children’s nutrition program run by volunteers of the Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market (SWEFM). In its five years of existence, it has gained tremendous momentum, popularity, and community buy-in. Sprouts is now open and free to all children between the ages 428 Riverbend Square of 4 and 12, thanks to the generous financial donations of community 780-438-3682 minded businesses, some of its area www.forestofjewels.com community leagues, and even some of Follow Us on Facebook and Instagram! its participants! How Does Sprouts Work? Sprouts Hours: Monday to Friday 10-6, Saturdays 10-5, Closed Sundays and Holidays is designed to empower kids to make their own healthy eating decisions, to educate them about where their food comes from, and to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle. The key elements include: 1. Each week the children came to market, they check in at the Sprouts tent and receive a wooden token that is worth $2. These tokens can only be used on fruit, vegetables or food plants (if children want to grow their own food). It’s the children who decide what they will purchase with their token, and we encourage them to try new fruits and veggies and expand their nutritional horizons! 2. Some of the farmers that participate in the program go out of their way to create special bags, baskets, and cups that contain healthy fruits & veggies that are worth more than the $2 value, and in this way volunteer their own time, creativity, and financial contribution to the program. We are so thankful for their involvement! 3. The children enter a dialogue with our volunteers about their healthy eating and the nutritional decisions they are making in their lives, including dialogues with the farmers about where their food comes from and how it’s grown. 4. Next, Sprouts families receive child-friendly recipes, designed to teach basic cooking skills and get children more involved in meal prep and planning at home. Each recipe is very child-friendly and fun and designed by University of Alberta nutrition student volunteers and the Sprouts Recipe Coordinator (Sheri Hendsbee). The recipes are kid friendly, designed in bright colours with simple instructions meant to encourage families to cook together, to eat together, and to connect over home cooked meals. 5. The first 1000 children to sign up receive a bright orange Sprouts Riders Wanted! bag that they can shop with, and it’s theirs to return to market with each week to carry their healthy goodies. SUMMER The past few weeks in Ottawa have been busy and the Trans Mountain Expansion Project has dominated a lot the focus. I was able to speak about the importance of this project several times during GREEN SHACK Question Period and with many media outlets. The government announced at the end of May that it will buy the pipeline from LOCATION DATES DAYS TIMES parent company Kinder Morgan for $4.5 billion. However, I predict the cost of the project will be much higher and have been repeatedly requesting Brander Gardens more detailed financial information. 14815 – 56 Ave July 3 – August 23 Monday – Friday 2:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Reforms to our election laws also dominated discussion for most of May. The Rink and Building Project is Currently on Hold

As of the last issue of The Ragg-Times in May we had issued drawings for firm bids. The bids came back significantly higher than budgeted. This, combined with a $550,000 shortfall in grants and funding has put the project on hold for this construction season so we can look at our options.

The budget was based on a very similar rink and building built recently by another community league. One example of the 50% increase in bids for the rink is the requirement to remove one metre of poor soil at a cost of $140,000. This same soil condition carries over to increasing the building foundations, parking lot and landscaping costs.

We are trying to wrap our heads around these issues and will address what we have to leave out for now. All indications are that we will put the rink on hold, and proceed first with the building once we address the funding gap, hopefully next year. We are preparing a fundraiser bulletin that we can distribute to our communities of Haddow, Henderson and Falconer Heights with the hopes of raising a target of $250,000 from within the communities.

Budget Bids Rink with concrete pad $469K $754K Architect, engineering $110K $110K Building and parking lot $1188K $1452K Total $1767K $2316K ($1562 without rink)

Available cash in hand $425K Grants $675K Total $1100K (short $462K without rink)

Next steps in our process include:  Continue to review project design and scope for opportunities to reduce costs.  Develop a fundraising strategy, including the potential for in-kind contributions  Evaluate the costs, benefits and timing of staging the project

Contact [email protected] to donate or for inquiries. Volunteers Needed for Casino on November 9 & 10

We need your help for several hours! 38 people are required to help at the casino on Friday, November 9 and Saturday November 10.

Our major source of income for capital projects such as the construction of the three playgrounds and parks at Haddow Park, Henderson Park and Falconer Heights Park and now our building and rink is the bi-annual casino that The Ridge community league participates in. Historically, 38 people volunteering for one or two shifts on the two days has resulted in about $75,000 towards these projects. One 6 or 7 hour time contribution on your part results in a return of almost $2000 towards these projects!

You do not even need to know what a straight flush is since we leave that to the dealers employed by the casino. It is actually a fun time and a good chance to meet other people in your community.

Please email [email protected] today to leave us your name or if you have questions.

Trust us, that face doesn’t help your child to leave your seek comfort, feel curious and then discover, feel angry and then create arms and walk through our door. If their grown up looks terrified, calm, feel hurt and then be forgiving, feel frustrated and then succeed. Give then there must be something to be scared of!! So practice a happy, them time to do the important work of childhood and remember that it proud, brave face and show that face to your child on their first day can’t be bought in a box or delivered in a program. Just find a Playschool and every day. Believe they can do it, will be successful, and let that that is full of smiles, mess, fun, and people who will worry and work along shine through. Then go back out to your car and cry your heart out. with you on the developmental appropriate stuff. Find a playschool that will Fake it until you make it. And that’s ok. help you not worry about the rest. Just fall in love with playschool. Together. • Playschool is about taking your child from “I can’t” to “I can”. It’s about believing they are ready to try, resilient enough to fail, and competent enough to meet their development milestones at their own pace. Please don’t compare your child to others, it isn’t a race. Please don’t set your sights on developmentally inappropriate goals but instead focus on developmentally appropriate gains. You are an essential link in this process. If you are sending them to playschool where they are expected to try to dress themselves, toilet themselves, feed themselves, clean up toys, etc then you must believe they can do it. If you are doing these things FOR your child at home then you send a mixed message. Believe they CAN so that they will believe they CAN and give them the time to try and keep trying. Help them when they need it, but give them room to struggle, and celebrate every gain. Remind yourself that you already know how to put on your coat so give your child time and room to learn how too, and when they turn to you, glowing with pride in an inside out misbuttoned sweater, smile and say “I KNEW you could do it”. Later you can laugh. And that’s ok. • Choose your child’s clothing and supplies to create success. Most children do not even have the fine motor skills or coordination to tie shoe laces before they are five and the plethora of snaps, velcro, and stretch laces mean we don’t have to push it. So sending your child to Playschool in those ‘cute little lace up high tops’ just creates more work for your child’s teacher and gives your child one more “I can’t” to deal with, because developmentally they really can’t. So choose wisely. Belts, button up pants, anything that does up in the back or snaps at the bottom, complicated buckles, difficult
