Updates from Your City Councillor Key Priorities for 2018 By: Tim Cartmell, Ward 9, City Councillor

s we look ahead to what’s sure to be a very busy and exciting year on City A Council and for the City of Edmonton as a whole, I am motivated to be a strong advocate for the needs of Ward 9 residents. 2018 will see many major decisions coming before City Council that we need to get right. One that is top of mind for me and many Ward 9 residents is the updated concept plan for converting Terwillegar Drive into a freeway between Whitemud Drive and the Anthony Henday. This plan will be presented to City Council this spring, and my intention is to push to have the 40th Avenue interchange included on the four year Transportation Master Plan, and additional crossings included in the 10 year Transportation Master Plan. In addition to Terwillegar Drive being a top transportation priority for 2018, I will also be focused on advocating for thoughtful discussion and planning related to the expansion of LRT, and advocating for using Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT. Edmontonians have seen growing pains and frustration about the products delivered versus the products promised when it comes to our LRT system. We need to be deliberative and unafraid to ask the tough questions to ensure that Edmontonians get transit that works for them and that respects your hard earned money. While making decisions on past LRT projects, it seemed that Council did not have all of the available, pertinent information. This time, I would like Council to be in a position to say they had all available information, and have made fully informed, value based decisions. That’s why I put forward a motion to get the facts on the costs associated with LRT versus BRT, to make sure we are making the right decisions, based on data, for our city. Finally, I will be pushing for common sense to prevail on two topics that have been a source of much frustration for Edmontonians - photo radar, and playground zones. I do not support how Edmonton currently operates its photo radar program, and believe that traffic enforcement should be about safety, not money. We clearly need to take a more common sense approach to how and when playground zones are used in our communities. In my opinion, playground zones should not be on arterial roadways, and they should not extend until 9 pm in winter months when the sun sets many hours earlier. Please feel free to take the time to share with me your thoughts on these issues, or any other topics related to municipal politics. I welcome you to get in contact with my office by email at [email protected], or by phone at 780-496-8130.

Counts take place on a and save 15%. selected day within a two-week We also have a year round period either side of Christmas riding program. Call us now day. Within this period in for more details. the Edmonton region there were eleven other counts. The Edmonton count is one of over 400 individual counts undertaken in locations all over Canada. Worldwide, data has been See you in the Saddle! collected in multiple locations for the past 112 years. This year was Edmonton’s 69th count and Edmonton has the distinction of holding the world record for the most participants, however, the record would not be broken this year. We looked forward with some trepidation to this years Christmas Bird Count as anecdotally we were all aware that bird sightings were lower this Fall. In November we experienced an unseasonable cold snap followed by an exceptionally warm December. For the first count in years the temperature on count day was above zero and we were all concerned how this unusual weather pattern would affect the count. Sunday, December 17th dawned mild and clear but by noon the stillness was broken by strong winds and the drop in temperature heralded the brutally cold weather that would last until the New Year. Zone 4 was pleased to have our highest number of participants this year with 18 enthusiastic bush beaters and 58 feeder watchers participating. At the end of the day, in spite of the negative thoughts earlier, we were pleased to have a credible total count of 25 species of birds in our Zone. This was about the average of previous years although, as expected, the total numbers of birds were considerably lower than other years. It was much the same story for the rest of the city counts. The total species count was 44, quite a lot lower than last year’s count of 47. Individual bird counts were dramatically down with a total of 15,543 birds counted at the end of the day. This will be increased slightly when some late counts are recorded. This compares to the final count last year of 40,885 birds. There were a few low counts that might raise concerns, for example, in Edmonton only 237 Bohemian Waxwings were seen compared to 19,448 last year, 706 House Finch (1371 last year), Black-capped Chickadee 2693 (4119), Pine Siskins 137 (548) and House Sparrow 2,729 (5,606). It was not all bad news, however. There were several species this year that had higher counts than 2016. For example, 50 American Robins were seen with only 17 last year, 135 Pine Grosbeaks compared to five in 2016, and although the count for Downey Woodpeckers was slightly lower than last year, in our Zone we counted a record number of 396. Open House - Thurs. Feb 15, 7:00-9:00 pm From year to year, the counts vary somewhat. This a reflection of (12015 - 39 A Ave) seasonal fluctuations, local variations and genuine effects of weather or The Little Aspen Playschool Society has been running in the food supply. The question arises, what is the explanation for this dramatic southwest community of Aspen Gardens for over 25 years. It is a loss of birds in this years Christmas Bird Count? There is no doubt in play-oriented program with 3hr classes and no parent duty days. Edmonton there is a continual and cumulative loss of habitat and this year the weather pattern was abnormal with both warmer and colder extremes in the preceding weeks. If climate change is to blame we will have to see wait and see the effect on counts in future years. We used an internet reporting method again this year and the process again proved very efficient. I would like to thank all those that participated in this year’s count. As much of our natural habitat is being rapidly lost to development, the keen eye of the feeder watchers are the eyes we depend on each year. It is a pleasure to have such a willing and enthusiastic group of participants. If you are interested, but were not able to participate in this year’s count, or would like to be involved in the 2018 count, give me a call and I will put you on the mailing list for next year. Mindfulness A Community of Practice Launched in Riverbend By: Billy Strean n Sunday, January 21, 2018, the Riverbend Mindfulness O Community of Practice had its first gathering in Lillian Osborne High School’s (LOHS) library. Community members enjoyed conversation, shared experiences, and engaged in a mindfulness practice together. A “community of practice” involves a group of people who share a common interest and it evolves naturally with the members’ particular preferences. Our community is just getting going and those who have a long-time mindfulness practice or are relatively new to the idea are all welcome. As we share information and experiences, we look forward to learning from each other and developing personally and professionally. We will continue to gather once a month at LOHS library on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am. The dates are February 25, March 18, April 15, May 27, June 24. A very special thank you to Lillian Osborne High School for providing us a beautiful space to come together to practice, share and build our community. For those who don’t know me, my name is Miep and I am taking over as President of the Riverbend Community League from Mary Lou Sedgwick, who has promised to be my ear and shoulder as I strive to do as good a job as she has during her tenure. I volunteered as VP for the past few years and have represented the Ronning Street Park project since 2015 and thoroughly enjoy my time on the RCL board. I hope to welcome many of you to our Family Skate Fest and Pancake breakfast on February 24th from 9 am-noon at the Brookside Hall. Come enjoy a breakfast with friends and neighbours for just $1/plate and then burn off those happy calories skating on the beautiful Brookside Rinks, or letting the kids enjoy the Winter Wonderland that is the new Brookside Playground! I for one defi nitely look forward to seeing the friendly faces and families that make up our wonderful community in this Winter City! 2018 is also a special year because we celebrate Elizabeth Emslie, our fantastic Executive Administrator’s 5-year Anniversary with RCL! Elizabeth is the smiling face welcoming you at the RCL offi ce and the woman behind the warm voice you speak with when you call us. I am thrilled to take this opportunity to publicly thank her for all her hard work, dedication and energy. I am very excited to welcome a new Vice-President to the RCL Board. Howard Nash joined the board at the November AGM and we are thrilled for the perspective and expertise he brings to the role. My fi rst year as President of the Riverbend Community League promises to be exciting, with another playground project taking root, the long awaited Terwillegar Drive expansion beginning their community consultation process and the League serving the residents of this great area with events and initiatives galore. There are a number of opportunities to volunteer with your Community League, so if you would like to lend your skills to be a volunteer coordinator, school liaison, seniors representative or even get your feet wet as a member at large or volunteer for our great events, feel free to contact me and we will chat! St. Monica School What a Wonderful Celebration of Culture! By: Nancy Bromley e were very fortunate to be joined by Masani St. Rose and Bill Mitchell for two days of drumming and dancing at St. Monica W school. Our population of students is wonderfully diverse, and we wanted to celebrate the growing number of students coming from Africa to our school. Masani is a dancer specializing in West African and Caribbean dance and throughout the years, Masani has worked with various studios, schools and professional groups across Canada. The students were so excited to get up and dance and share her enthusiasm as they learned dances from all over West Africa. Bill Mitchell is a master drummer that has been playing drums for over 40 years. One of his specialties is African drumming styles and he came to share this with our students. The students were so inspired by Bill that they have been asking to make drums, shakers learning with a special celebration with an outdoor tipi. The Edmonton and rain sticks in their classrooms. Catholic School Champion Project fund has also given us a grant to add a living tipi to the outdoor learning space we are creating. Throughout the year, as per the work of the Truth and Reconciliation commission, we are embedding First Nations, Metis and Inuit perspectives In February, we will be celebrating our Chinese students with some within our curriculum. A Great big thank you to everybody that attended OHCL’s The Great Canadian Winter Family Fun Festival on December 9 -- the event was a huge success! What better way to celebrate Canada 150 than with sleigh rides, christmas carolling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, a winter fire, bouncy castles, the maple sugar shack, face painting, crafts, virtual reality demonstrations, French Canadian entertainment, African drumming, a christmas choir, SANTA and the elves, photo booth, cotton candy, popcorn, pizza and, of course, the Canada 150 Birthday Cake. And who better to celebrate it with than more than 1,500 of our friends from Oak Hills and neighbouring Community Leagues. This remarkable day could not have happened without the support from our many sponsors including:

TCRC 5th Annual

Pause by Gabrielle Photography IMAGINEHAPPEN Special thanks to to all of our Volunteers including Rob Agostinis (Event Lead), Karen Sheydwasser, Barb Martowski, Jim Bradshaw, the student volunteers of Lillian Osborne High School, Mother Margaret Mary Catholic High School and Old Scona High School and last but not least, our wonderful Oak Hills Community League (OHCL) "Board" of fine people and community leaders that spend so much time to benefit all of us in the Oak Hills Community. And most importantly, thanks to all of you! The smiles and laughs by all helped make this a memorable day for everyone! It’s people and events like this that make Whitemud Oaks and Whitemud Hills feel like the best place to celebrate Christmas and all the holidays! See photos below.

Our other exciting event was our Light ‘Em Contest, where households in the Carter Crest and Leger area displayed some of their amazing Christmas lights and decorations. Our amazing judges, Lydia and Gene Emanuel cruised our neighbourhood streets and based on criteria given to them, they selected 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Honourable Mention winners from each area. Those owners were given a special embossed certificate and a gift certificate courtesy of Harts Table and Bar; thank you for your generous contribution. See photos below.
