Monday, May 17, 2021 The Principal’s Ponderings Like most of you I imagine, I spent most of this past weekend outside enjoying the beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures. Isn’t it amazing how this change in weather can be so good for you emotionally and physically? I’m hoping it will be good for our students as well as they continue to deal with doing school at home, missing their friends, and having so many activities cancelled. As parents, I pray for you regularly because I know this pandemic situation is so hard for your children and certainly not what any of us would want for them. I continue to hope for some sort of return to in person learning before the end of the school year and that our summer will be somewhat ‘normal’ for all of us! I am looking forward to seeing many of you THIS Wednesday evening for our Spring Membership Meet- ing @ 7:00 pm. Whether you are a member of our School Society or not, these meetings are an oppor- tunity for all WCS parents/guardians to hear from our Board and to learn more about what is happening ‘behind the scenes’ at WCS. (If you would like more information about becoming a member, please con- tact me or Alice Bouwma at [email protected].) On Wednesday, we will say good-bye to 3 current Board members and welcome 3 new ones. The 2021/2022 Budget will be presented, as well as reports presented from various committees. We will also say a formal farewell to Mrs. Rehman and Mrs. VanderMeer. I look forward to seeing you there on Zoom! (You have received several emails with the Zoom link to Wednesday’s meeting. If you need it re-sent to you, please contact Mrs. Venneri.) Just a reminder that THIS Fri/May/21 and NEXT Mon/May/24 are ‘NO SCHOOL’ days as we enjoy an extra long holiday VICTORIA DAY weekend! “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 The Story of Victoria Day For many of us, the Victoria Day weekend is a time to start thinking about summer! And of course, there is the added bonus of a day off school! But why do we celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria, who died nearly 115 years ago? Here is a brief history lesson for you to teach your child/ren! Until 1956, the birthday of the current monarch (the king or queen of Great Britain) was also celebrated in Canada, sometimes on his/her own birthday and sometimes on Victoria Day. Victoria was queen when Canada became its own country in 1867, and she was the one who chose Ottawa as our capital. After she died in 1901, the Canadian government declared that May 24 would be a holiday in her honour. In 1957, Victoria Day was named the official birthday in Canada of Queen Elizabeth II. (In Great Britain, her birthday, which is actually April 21, is celebrated in June.) And ever since then, Victoria Day is officially held on the Monday right before May 25.
