The controversies of the eighteenth century about the purpose and limits of government, as well as the violent struggle for independence, represent the birth pangs of our country. They also speak to us today. Like America’s founders, we too are engaged in the process of thinking what we want our government to be. The debates of more than two centuries ago help us clarify the choices we as responsible citizens must face. In A More Perfect Union: American Independence and the Constitution, you will experience the events of 1763-88 as Americans of that time experienced them. You will study the political ideas, public statements, and actions that led to the creation of the United States. Most impor- tant, you will understand how the founders of our country grappled with the issues of their day. As is the case today, Americans in 1776 or 1788 were hardly unanimous about framing the political structure of their society. On the contrary, divisions and disagreements ran deep. In these readings, you will examine primary sources to reconstruct the confl icts of the late 1700s. You will be given a special insight into the diffi culties confronting our country’s founders and the timelessness of the issues they raised. As you will see, this unit is far removed from the por- traits of elderly statesmen in frock coats and powdered wigs. Instead, you will discover the fi ery radicals, conscience-torn loyalists, and reluctant patriots who, each in their own way, strove to secure life, liberty, and well-being for themselves, their families, and their communities. You should pay special attention to the primary source documents included in this unit. Al- though the English language of past centuries poses a challenge for readers today, you should do your best to extract meaning from the documents. Your effort will pay off in a clearer understand- ing of the emotions and reasoning expressed during the fi rst years of the American republic.     How Bad Were the Official Records of the Federal Convention? Mary Sarah Bilder* ABSTRACT The official records of the ConstitutionalConvention of 1787 have been neglected and dismissed by scholars for the last century, largely to due to Max Farrand'scriticisms of both the records and the man responsible for keeping them-Secretary of the Convention William Jackson. This Article disagrees with Farrand'sconclusion that the Convention records were bad, and aims to resurrect the records and Jackson's reputation. The Article suggests that the endurance of Farrand'scritique arises in part from misinterpretationsof cer- tain proceduralcomponents of the Convention and failure to appreciate the significance of others, understandable consideringthe inaccessibility of the of- ficial records. The Article also describes the story of the records after the Con- vention but before they were published, including the physical limbo of the records in the aftermath of the Convention and the eventual deposit of the records in March 1796 amidst the rapid development of disagreements over constitutional interpretation. Finally, the Article offers a few cautionary re- flections about the lessons to be drawn from the official records. Particularly, it recommends using caution with Max Farrand's records, paying increased attention to the procedural context of the Convention, and recognizing that Constitutionalinterpretation postdated the Constitution. It is common knowledge that he was an Anglican, yet friendly and cooperative with Virginia Presbyterians. However, historians have yet to go beyond those general categories to the specific strains of Presbyterianism and Anglicanism which Henry uniquely harmonized into a unified belief system. Henry displayed a moderate, Latitudinarian, type of Anglicanism. Unlike many other Founders, his experiences with a specific strain of Presbyterianism confirmed and cooperated with these Anglican commitments. His Presbyterian influences could also be described as moderate, and latitudinarian in a more general sense. These religious strains worked to build a distinct religious outlook characterized by a respect for legitimate authority, whether civil, social, or religious. This study goes further to show the relevance of this distinct religious outlook for understanding Henry’s political stances. Henry’s sometimes seemingly erratic political principles cannot be understood in isolation from the wider context of his religious background. Uniquely harmonized

This genre depends on a method of caring for the self that privileges an autonomous identity that defines itself, through labor, against upper class values. Though Johnson employs many of the tropes and tactics of courtesy and civility literature, his work offers a new focus on the discipline of one’s mind and the assertion of an independent self in an urban culture. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the history of conduct literature, following its changes from Renaissance courtesy literature, which focused on the court, to civility literature, which emphasized the importance of participation in a broader public sphere.
