    Playing in 7D: Considerations for a study of a musical instrumentality in the gameplay of video games Pedro Cardoso, Miguel Carvalhais ID+, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal [email protected] / [email protected] Abstract. The intersection between music and video games has been of increased interest in academic and in commercial grounds, with many video games classified as ‘musical’ having been released over the past years. The purpose of this paper is to explore some fundamental concerns regarding the instrumentality of video games, in the sense that the game player plays the game as a musical or sonic instrument, an act in which the game player becomes a musical performer. We define the relationship between the player and the game system (the musical instrument) to be action- based. We then propose that the seven discerned dimensions we found to govern that relationship to also be a source of instrumentality in video games. Something that not only will raise a deeper understanding of musical video games but also on how the actions of the player are actually embed in the generation and performance of music, which, in some cases, can be transposed to other interactive artefacts. In this paper we aim at setting up the grounds for discussing and further develop our studies of action in video games intersecting it with that of musical performance, an effort that asks for multidisciplinary research in musicology, sound studies and game design. We are also going to talk about the major console-producing companies, one by one. Arcade games are coin-operated machines, usually installed in public businesses, such as restaurants. They were most popular from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. Even though they lost popularity in the western market, they still continue strong in Asian territory such as Japan. Arcades were home to great games like: Mortal Kombat Pac-man And Donkey Kong This is one of the most well-known and prominent video game companies of all time. Although they didn’t start out with video games they had great sucess with the Nintendo Entertainment System and it’s sucessor.Until now they have released the N64, the Gamecube, the Wii and Wii U. They also released various mobile consoles like the Gameboy, Ds, 3Ds and their variants. Nintendo owns great franchises like: Mario Legend of Zelda Metroid And Pokémon SEGA is also a very important company, being the competitor of Nintendo during the 1980s. They achieved this with Sonic, the companie’s mascot. He was a platformer like Nintendo’s Mario, but instead of being an italian plumber he was a fast and “hip” blue hedgehog. In 2001, the Dreamcast (their latest console) failed and forced the company into going third-party. This means they started making games for other consoles instead of their own. They have many iconic franchises like: Crazy Taxi Sonic the Hedgehog And Super Monkey Ball As you know Sony doesn’t only produce games, but they are “big dogs” in the gaming industry.

The author argues that Takahashi’s videogame is an expression of the technical, aesthetic and cultural values Murakami describes as SuperFlat, and as such expresses continuity between the popular culture and contemporary art of two of Japan’s best-known international creative practitioners. Introduction In the transcript accompanying the film-essay Sans Soleil (1983), Chris Marker describes the now oft- cited allegory at work in Pac-Man (Atarisoft, 1981). For Marker, playing the chomping Pac-Man reveals a semantic layer between graphic and gameplay. The character-in-action is charged with a symbolic intensity that exceeds its apparent simplicity.
