Abstract The relationship between magyarization and Hungarian civil society during the reform era of Hungarian history (1790-1848) is the subject of this dissertation. This thesis examines the cultural and political activities of three liberal oppositional nobles: András Fáy (1786-1864), István Bezerédj (1796-1856) and Ödön Beöthy (1796-1854). These three men were chosen as the basis of this study because of their commitment to a two- pronged approach to politics: they advocated greater cultural magyarization in the multiethnic Hungarian Kingdom and campaigned to extend the protection of the Hungarian constitution to segments of the non-aristocratic portion of the Hungarian population. -

CEU eTD Collection II DOI: 10.14754/CEU.2019.10 Abstract This dissertation investigates the dynamics between academic antisemitism, Jewish social mobility and Jewish migration through the case study of the “numerus clausus exiles” – as Jewish students who left interwar Hungary due to the antisemitic numerus clausus law (Law XXV of 1920) were called by contemporaries and historians. After a conceptual and historiographic introduction in the first chapter embedding this work in the contexts of Jewish studies, social history and exile studies; interwar Hungarian Jewish peregrination is examined from four different aspects in four chapters based on four different types of sources. -

Raleigh Dr. Peter Sherwood ©2012 Zsolt Nagy ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ZSOLT NAGY: Grand Delusions: Interwar Hungarian Cultural Diplomacy, 1918-1941 (Under the direction of Chad Bryant) This dissertation examines the development of interwar Hungarian cultural diplomacy, concentrating on efforts in three areas: academia, the tourist industry, and motion picture and radio production. In the post-Versailles era new and old European states faced the challenge of creating or revising their respective national identities. They also forged images of their respective nations for various foreign audiences. In Hungary, the significance of international public opinion became painfully apparent only after the First World War when the victorious Allies granted 71.5 percent of the country’s territory to its neighbors. In order to secure Hungary’s status as a proper European nation and to gain invaluable international support for its foreign policy aims—the revision of the Trianon Treaty and international recognition of the Hungarian state—the Hungarian political elite devised an all-encompassing cultural diplomatic campaign. In cooperation with the country’s intellectual and industrial elite, they mobilized and deployed the country’s cultural capital—real and imagined—in order to influence international public opinion. The Hungarian leadership viewed cultural diplomatic efforts as a continuation of war by other means. -

Short-term Program for International Students Faculty of Humanities Eötvös Loránd University Budapest, Hungary AY 2011-12 Program Director: Professor Tibor Frank, PhD, DLitt NATIONALISM STUDIES Overview The short-term program on Nationalism Studies in Budapest, Hungary focuses on the fact that nationalism as a field of study is unavoidably inter- and multidisciplinary. The courses are designed to teach students what the humanities have to say about nationalism with special attention to East-Central Europe, where many forms of nation-building can be witnessed and analyzed as a result of the complex history of this region. The courses announced have been selected to represent the best scholarly intentions on nationalism in the various disciplines (philosophy, political science, history, and literary studies). Students are expected to use a consistent methodology during their studies and in their research and writing. They are also encouraged to combine the results of different disciplines in an innovative way. Following the reshaping of the states, borders, and nations of Central Europe more than two decades ago the problems of nation, nationhood, national identity, supranational integration, minority protection, ethnic movements, nationalist extremism have emerged as crucial questions of this region, with parallel phenomena throughout Europe and beyond.
