The good news continued with the announcements the destination would host the G20 meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors as well as three UCI-sanctioned international mountain biking events. These events firmly signal Tropical North Queensland as a global destination for business and leisure. Our credentials are further enhanced by two major proposals, the $8.15 billion Aquis development at Yorkeys Knob and Singapore’s Aspial Corporation plans for a $200 million, seven-tower project on a 24,000 square metre site in Spence Street. Halfway through the financial year we farewelled our Chief Executive Officer of more than eight years, Rob Giason, who was responsible for steering the organisation through some of its hardest times. We acknowledge his hard work implementing TTNQ’s strategic plan to grow tourism in the region.

Bird Trails Tropical Queensland daintree • cairns • Tablelands • Townsville www.birdingtropicalaustralia.com.au The Birdwatching capital of Australia! Rainforests, mountains, outback, swamps, lakes, parks, mudflats, mangroves, beaches and reef... It is no wonder that so many birds call North Queensland home with such a variety of habitats to choose from. In fact this area has the largest avifauna of any region in Australia. The North Queensland region alone is home to over 450 species of birds and 12 of these are local endemics. Whatever time of year you decide to visit there will always be plenty of birds to see. October to April is the time when the migrant species from Papua New Guinea including the beautiful Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Channel-billed Cuckoo and Eastern Koel are here. Many birds such as Noisy Pitta are also breeding at this time of year and are easier to observe as they search for food. During our cooler, drier, winter months of May-Sept, the Victoria’s Riflebirds are displaying and winter breeders such as White-eared Monarch can be easier to see. To supplement your birding there is also a whole host of other wildlife and environmental related activities available in the region. Go out for a day on the Reef to visit the seabird breeding colony at Michaelmas Cay off Cairns where you can also snorkel, dive and go reef viewing. This brochure will help you plan and undertake an unforgettable bird watching holiday in Tropical Australia. There are great birdwatching sites from Daintree in the north, Cairns Coast and Highlands to Townsville in the south.

  • From the Chief Executive Officer
FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AUSTRALIAN TROPICAL FOREST INSTITUTE (ATFI) The Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie, announced in Toronto at Bio2002 that his government was providing an investment of $7.8 from the Smart State Fund (SSRF) towards the establishment of the Australian Tropical Forest Institute. This is a huge boost for tropical forest research in North Queensland and a real coup for the Centre. The institute will be the focus of national and international research and commercial development based on the biodiversity of tropical forests and the key partners are the Rainforest CRC, James Cook University, The Wet Tropics Management Authority and BioProspect Australia Ltd. Significantly, north Queensland represents approximately five percent of the worlds biodiversity and much more of the Earth’s tropical forest biota. Just as significant, is the fact that north Queensland is internationally accessible and a natural central focus for the Asia-Pacific Rim region. Cairns is a modern, well serviced city, in a country with a stable economy and government, with a regional life style second to none in the world. The strength of the tourism industry is also testimony to its international attractiveness. Based on these features and the infrastructure made possible by the SSRFF funding, ATFI will be able to attract internationally renowned scientists and internationally focused biodiscovery industries to the Cairns district to form, with other Australian organisations, an interactive assemblage of organisations whose cooperative activity will produce outcomes, (brokered, sponsored, and supported by ATFI), far in excess of the efforts of the individual entities. ATFI will become the only institute of its kind in the world, literally within walking distance of World Heritage forest, fifteen minutes from a busy international airport, twenty minutes from one of Australia’s largest convention centres and half an hour from the Great Barrier Reef – another unique world centre for biodiversity.
