Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

Associate Professor, Dept. of Political Science, Bethune College, Kolkata-6 Abstract: Rabindranath Tagore, although basically a poet, had a multifaceted personality. Among his various activities his sincerity as a social thinker and activist attract our attention. But this area is till now comparatively unexplored. Many scholars in this area have tried to study Tagore as a social thinker. But so far the findings are scattered and on the whole there is no comprehensive analysis in the strict sense of the term. Hence it is necessary to collect the different findings and to integrate and arrange them within a theoretical framework. This article is an attempt to make a review of literature of the existing books and to prepare a short but sharp bibliography to introduce the area. Key words: Rabindranath Tagore, society, social, political, history, education, Santiniketan, Visva-Bharati Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941) was a prolific writer, a successful music composer, a painter, an actor, a drama director and what not. Besides these talents, he was also a social activist and contributed a lot to Indian social and political thought, although this area has not been very much explored till now. Tagore was emphatic upon society building. So he tried to develop all the component elements which were essential for developing the Indian society. He studied the history of India to follow the trend of its evolution. Next he prepared his programme of action – rural reconstruction and spread of education. -

JOHNSON Editor's Introduction: HJM is proud to select as our Editor’s Choice Award for this issue Marilynn S. Johnson’s superb study, The New Bostonians: How Immigrants Have Transformed the Metro Area since the 1960s, published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2015. After World War II, the greater Boston area experienced dramatic economic and demographic decline. The population plummeted from 801,444 in 1950 to 641,071 in 1970, a 20% drop. Since the 1980s, however, the city has witnessed a renaissance, a phenomenon similar to what has occurred in many other major urban areas. Marilynn S. Johnson argues that immigrants have contributed to this renaissance in numerous yet often overlooked ways. -

Jadavpur University Faculty of Arts Department of History SYLLABUS Preface The Department of History, Jadavpur University, was born in August 1956 because of the Special Importance Attached to History by the National Council of Education. The necessity for reconstructing the history of humankind with special reference to India‘s glorious past was highlighted by the National Council in keeping with the traditions of this organization. The subsequent history of the Department shows that this centre of historical studies has played an important role in many areas of historical knowledge and fundamental research. As one of the best centres of historical studies in the country, the Department updates and revises its syllabi at regular intervals. It was revised last in 2008 and is again being revised in 2011.The syllabi that feature in this booklet have been updated recently in keeping with the guidelines mentioned in the booklet circulated by the UGC on ‗Model Curriculum‘. The course contents of a number of papers at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels have been restructured to incorporate recent developments - political and economic - of many regions or countries as well as the trends in recent historiography. To cite just a single instance, as part of this endeavour, the Department now offers new special papers like ‗Social History of Modern India‘ and ‗History of Science and Technology‘ at the Postgraduate level. The Department is the first in Eastern India and among the few in the country, to introduce a full-scale specialization on the ‗Social History of Science and Technology‘. The Department recently qualified for SAP. -

W. W. Hunter, 1876 This is a history of forgetting in the Bengal Delta, a forgetting that enabled human design in the world’s largest delta and one of its most vulnerable landscapes. From the eighteenth century on, colonial law, bureaucracy and technology eclipsed and erased the “secrets of land-making” and unmaking in Bengal’s seaface, where land dissolved gradually into the vast and turbid waters of the Bay of Bengal, in order to build colonial Calcutta, the second capital of the British Empire. In the postcolonial moment, this amnesia has turned into hubris, where the aqueous and the igneous elements are now being transformed into landed concrete prop- erty. Such is the aspiration of “Atmosphere,” one of the new high-rises under construction in the world’s fourth-most low-lying city, Kolkata (Calcutta’s current name).1 Billed in its promotional literature as “Your Home in the Clouds,” Atmosphere is selling the promise of a glistening new apartment building projecting into the sky in eastern Kolkata. The architects of Atmosphere claim that it is the first “residential sky-sculp- ture” in the world. Architectural design, along with India’s emerging aspiration to be part of a global informational economy, manifest them- selves as homogenous and smooth spaces of new satellite towns flanking Indian metropolises, often erasing their fluid ecologies. -

Flood characteristics decide the status of the terrain for its capability for sustaining the increased population of that area. In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyze the flood characteristics using the Gumble‟s Method and their impact on sustainable development and environmental management in the Deltaic Region of West Bengal, India. The Murshidabad District of the West Bengal State, India has been selected as a case study to assess the environmental impact of flood and their characteristics which includes different measures like flood elevation, discharge, volume and duration. The physical and socio-economic condition of the study-area have also been analyzed. An attempt has also been made to suggest some measures for the development of the study-area.
