  • Somerset Records Discography
Somerset/Stereo Fidelity by David Edwards, Patrice Eyries & Mike Callahan © 2018 by Mike Callahan Somerset/Stereo Fidelity Records Discography Somerset Records was a division of Miller International Co. located in Media Pennsylvania. David L Miller was the President and had previously owned, Essex Records and Trans-World Records. Somerset was started in 1958. The output of the label was popular, jazz and classical. Of the first 63 releases on Somerset, 62 of them were straight reissues of Trans-World albums. After Somerset/Stereo Fidelity, Miller was involved with two other budget labels Alshire and Sutton. The Sales Manager was Joe Martin and Miller handled A&R. Somerset was a budget label whose albums listed for sale for $1.98, when most albums sold for $3.98 in the ‘50s and ‘60s. A subsidiary label was Stereo Fidelity, the only difference between the two labels was that the monaural record was a Somerset and the stereo record was on the Stereo Fidelity label. The numbers were the same. Main Series Canadian LP’s in this series did not use the last two zeros, for example SF-12700 was SF-127, leading to endless confusion about the Somerset release numbers. P-100 S1 – Mood Music Sampler – Various Artists [1958] Reissue of Trans-World TW-100. Welcome to Issue 116, the late summer edition of Tales From The Woods magazine. I trust you are all keeping safe and well as this pandemic continues to wreak havoc around the globe. Our thoughts go out to all our many friends across the Atlantic who are, at time of going to press, suffering in many states a severity of infection. We all here in the UK have experienced the worst casualty figures in western Europe, and thoughts from us all go out to you, families, friends that have been lucky enough to escape the worst of it and continue to do so. Once again I would like, with much pride, to thank so many of you for keeping the faith, and not worrying too much regarding refunds for our “Swamp Pop Spectacular”, patiently waiting for old father time to roll along and for this year to pass, another to be born, beckoning much happier times, when we can all get together again and have a twice postponed show in London’s legendary 100 Club.

SPINS AND NEEDLES CHAPTER ONE In the world of big business there is absolutely no one who is more sure of what he is doing, more sold on his profession and more knocked out on himself as the zenith of contribution to his fellow man than the disc jockey. The disc jockey (known to many as simply the d.j.), comes in many forms, fashions and styles, including plump with thinning hair, skinny with loads of pompous hair, fat with no hair, or an intermixture of any and all. Most generally speaking, the disc jockey is easily recognizable in a crowd via his self-confidence, suave mannerisms, distinctive and deliberate voice, and the most gorgeous girl in the group attached to his arm and idolizing his every gesture and well-informed word. The fact that he only met the girl after his air shift that morning and that she came to the get-together with him after he had promised her a half dozen Glen Campbell albums and eight Merle Haggard albums which he had hiped from the Capitol Records man inhaling his Man Of War cologne and gasping over his tailored cloth.
