The Prez’s Piece Darren Linton

Welcome to season 2013/2014, Your new committee has been hard at work over winter to provide you with a stronger club both on the field and off. We can't do it alone and ask each and every member to assist us in any way you can.

On field, we have reappointed Jarryd Williamson as Coach to build on last year’s efforts. Under Jarryd, each grade improved, and Turf 1 almost played finals. With natural progression, some new recruits (who we'll introduce later) and more dedication, we expect teams to play finals this year. Steven Spoljaric will once again Captain Turf 1. Spol was unlucky to miss out on a 3rd consecutive Wookey Medal (League Best Player) last season by one solitary vote. But he did collect another Turf 1 average, Turf Cricketer of the Year Award and his 3rd consecutive DDCA Team of the Year selection. Also congratulations to Shane Bell who was also selected for the 3rd straight year.

We have appointed Rob 'Skulla' Cullen as our Director of Cricket and Chairman of Selectors. Rob played in Parkfield's first ever Turf 1 game and brings a wealth of cricket experience and knowledge. With Jarryd and Spol, Rob will set training and match day standards and expectations which we expect to be adhered to. Raising the standard of presentation, attitude and professionalism to practice and games. Swiz will assist Rob with selection, help them by making sure they have your contact details and letting them know of your availability.

Off field we are making progress too. Phil Snow has joined as our Sponsorship co-ordinator and has already ensured that we have regained support from BW Plumbing, RACV. Springvale RSL, Bendigo Bank Dingley and Paesano International Buffet to name a few. All of our sponsors will be proudly listed in all Parkfield publications, please support them as they support us. If you know of any businesses or individuals looking to sponsor Parkfield, please contact Phil. 5

We've gained a significant government grant through the hard work of last year’s Secretary Ty Edwards, unfortunately Ty has decided to play cricket closer to home this year. We wish him, Tanya and new son Heath all the best, and hope to see them again at Parkfield soon.

Throughout winter and because of the hard work of David Ford, we held both a Golf Tournament and a Poker Tournament. Brownlow night also went well. Usually an inactive time for a cricket club, these events enabled us to raise some funds we otherwise couldn't. Thanks to all of those that supported these events. We have appointed Jessica Spoljaric as our events co-ordinator. Jess is very keen and has set out a list of events for you all to enjoy over the next 6 months. Jess is also running our canteen this year along with a full time job, and raising 2 kids (and Spol). Jess would appreciate it if you can all ask your wives, girlfriends etc to give her a hand, even if its just for one day or night. We'll put a roster up, as we will in the bar, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Speaking of the bar, Paul Fear is back for another stint as Bar Manager, thank you Feary. Again, we expect everyone to assist Feary at least once during the season.

Many hands make light work. Jobs are many, but usually left to too few. A job roster will be put on the notice board, if you can do just one job for your club, it will help us immensely. It may be a night behind the bar or helping Jess in the kitchen. Put your name next to one job on the list and make our jobs easier. We already know Doddsy will clean the rooms and help Bobby in the kitchen with Thursday meals and Saturday teas, Geoff will score for Turf 1, Tony will update the Club Stats and do anything else the club requires, Fordy will help with functions etc. Coming functions to put in your calender include,

Membership fees are now due, we still have one of the cheapest subs around and our juniors play for FREE. If you can't pay in one hit, we're happy to take part payments. Speak to Adam Brown or Marcus Coutts for details.

So, good luck to everyone for the upcoming season, you only get out of it, what you put into it.

Cheers Darren Linton President Parkfield Cricket Club

Dandenong Leader DDCA Report

BERWICK In: Nirmal Wickramaratne (Narre Warren), Jy Driscoll. Out: Ryan Hercules (West Indies), Alex Cotter (UK) The skinny : The Wicks missed the finals last summer as the defending champs and will be slighted by it. They should be stronger with Sri Lankan star Bart Perera and Englishmen Chris Davies available for the whole summer. The Wicks expect their crop of young talent, led by Tanner Stanton, Cory Bevan, Ryan Williamson, Darren D’Souza and Liam Miller, to make a contribution. Likely finish: 7th

BUCKLEY RIDGES In : Daniel Francois Haasbroek (South Africa), Lucas Hoogenboom (Tooradin). Out : Daniel Watson (Casey South Melbourne), Troy Aust (Casey South Melbourne), Marc Calkin (Darwin), Greg Todd (Bentleigh), Johnny Lash (Lakes Entrance), Tom Rowe (Nottinghamshire) The skinny : The reigning premier has had more departures than ALP ministers at the Federal election. The Ridges and their band of merry supporters must hope that crack South African all-rounder Daniel Francois Haasbroek can take up some of the 1750-plus runs that have left the Postage Stamp. Lucas Hoogenboom is a pacy former Premier player who will form a lethal opening combination with Jeremy Kuru. But the losses are just too many for the Ridges to overcome. Likely finish: 5th

COOMOORA In : Joe Hawke (UK), Thanura Halambage (Sri Lanka), Dillon Gemmel-Smith (Noble Park). Out : Nil The skinny : In 2012-12 the Roos were competitive in their first season back in Turf 1. Four wins was a more than adequate effort. Paul Hill is again skipper and the Roos have high hopes that imports Halambage, a former Sri Lankan Under 19 top-order batsman, and Hawke, an all-rounder from England, can help propel them towards the top four. Vice-president Mick Temby said: “We hope to win a couple of extra games and sneak into the finals.’’ Likely finish: 9th

9

DANDENONG WEST In : Chandana Aravinda. Out : Dave Weerden (NSW), Ryan Buckley (UK) T he skinny: The West took the competition by storm last summer but were nutted in Round 11 and then the semi by eventual winner Buckley Ridges. Captain-coach Justin Stanton will again rely heavily on last year’s Wookey Medal winner Alex Roberts for a bumper summer. Roberts can do things most can’t and with Weerden going, he will need to be at his best with the stick. Buckley is a big loss. The tweaker may not have taken a bag full of with him on his return flight to Heathrow, but the Bulls will need to find someone to replace the 100-plus overs he sent down. Aravinda returns after missing last year. The Bulls will be one of a few clubs right in the hunt for March action. Likely finish: 6th

HALLAM KALORA PARK In: Ben Hillard (Frankston), Ryan Hillard (Frankston), Callum Prosser (UK), Corey Wilson (Doveton). Out: Johan Vorster (Noble Park), Lee Brown (season off) The skinny: I expect the Hawk to be the big improvers. For too long the club has relied on the Booth brothers, Cory and Leigh. With the Booths still at the top of their game, another set of brothers will ease the burden. Ben Hillard is a Premier X1 opening batsman and younger brother Ryan a leggie, and the former juniors are returning to the club. Corey Wilson is a massive in. A new- ball bowler who consistently takes early wickets, Wilson will lead the attack. Prosser will lean heavily on Wilson and is a left-arm opening bowler who has trialled with Essex in the UK. Likely finish: 4th

HSD In: Matt Cox (Ashburton), Adam Semmens. Out: Nil The skinny: HSD was the surprise packet of last summer. Having been predicted to finish last, the Soupmen missed the finals on a bizarre reverse outright in the final round. With no departures and the inclusion of top-of-the- list batsmen Semmens and Cox, they should see March action this campaign. Slick Davies is a jet and leggie Paul Stockdale can rip through sides like Hulk Hogan does singlets. Likely finish: 3rd

10

LYNDALE In : Nil. Out : Carmen Mapatuna (Sri Lanka) The skinny: Oh what a wait! After two decades of trying the Dales are back. The agony of many finals let-downs was replaced by ecstasy as the boys from Halton Road took the Turf 2 flag to return to the top flight. Skipper Rory Ingram hopes to add two Sri Lankan quicks to his premiership line-up. At this stage nothing has been confirmed but Ingram seemed confident they would arrive before Round 1. Batting jewel Dale Tormey will cause a lot of problems for the competition’s bowlers. Tormey, along with Jamie Brohier (610 runs at 61), Richie Faust and Ingram, forms a talented and competent batting line-up. Ingram said: Likely finish: 10th

MORDIALLOC In: Monto Perera (Malvern). Out: Andrew Niblett (South Africa) The skinny: Mordy were sensational last season, failing only at the final hurdle against a rampant Buckley Ridges. The Bloodhounds have not sat back on their heels thinking their side is good enough. In comes the competition’s best recruit in Monto Perera, who has been a sensational player at Sub-District level with his crafty leggies and dashing lower-order batting. The Hounds may add a Sri Lankan first-class wicketkeeper as well. Club legend Aaron Martello will play his 300th First XI game in Round 4. Gun quick Chathura Athukorala again headlines the attack. Throw in skipper Stuart Squires and Liam Bence and you have a bowling unit hard to beat. The Bloodhounds are experienced, know how to win and are primed for a tilt at ultimate glory. Likely finish: 1st.

NARRE WARREN In: Michael Nell, Shane Simpson. Out: Ateeq Javid (Springvale South), Nathan King (Springvale South), Nirmal Wickramatne (Berwick), James Giertz The skinny: Narre had the winter from hell. Firstly it lost stars in Javid, King and Wickramatne. The Magpies then worked tirelessly and obtained the signature of former Bloods star Jeeva Kulatunga, only for him to land the coaching job of the Sri Lankan women’s national team. Another Lankan import was good to go until he broke an ankle. And they had a commitment and clearance for Manoj Hettiarachchi, who now wants to return to the Bloods. Likely finish: 11th 11

NORTH DANDENONG In: Nil. Out: Alex Blake (UK), Scott Neeson (unavailable), Dean Gunawardana (work), Roshan De Silva (retired), Wayne Taylor (retired) The skinny: The Northeners look in trouble. They avoided the wooden spoon only in the final round last season and have lost several regulars. But they are hoping to add a couple of Englishmen, an opening bowler and a wicketkeeper- batsman. Coach David Bell is realistic about where his club is at. It may mean that he plies his trade in the firsts along with Shane Clark. Both had hoped to nurture and mentor the youngsters via the seconds. Likely finish: 12th

PARKFIELD In: Matt Aslett (Endeavour Hills), Manisha Dabrera Menzies (Newcastle). Out: Rod Bird (Ormond) The skinny: Any team with the competition’s best player, Steve Spoljaric, is going to win games. The man is a local cricket genius. Two Wookey Medals in three years are testament to that. Aslett is a batting all-rounder who should be great in the field as he is a class baseballer. Coach Jarryd Williamson, 21, said: “The kids are a year older. We hope Travis d’Souza can have a big year.” Williamson also indicated Brodie Snow could be one to keep an eye on. The Fields are another of those sides that could finish anywhere from 4th to 10th. Likely finish: 8th

SPRINGVALE SOUTH In: Ateeq Javid (Narre Warren), Nathan King (Narre Warren), Aaron Morrison (Dandenong), Dylan Quirk (Dandenong). Out: Warren Ayres (retired), Jeeva Kulatunga (Sri Lanka), Mateesha Perera (Sri Lanka), Harry Staude (injured), Jarryd Armitage (Merinda Park). The skinny: The comp’s most successful club in the past decade, with nine finals appearances. And the gains are arguably better than the losses, although the late departure of fast bowler Armitage to West Gippsland was a blow. Javid is a star. Last summer he made 635 runs at 70 for Narre Warren and since then he’s established himself in Warwickshire’s top team. There is doubt about his availability at the pointy end of the summer but the Bloods were willing to take that risk. Morrison, the former Cranny left-arm slowie, played in Dandenong’s seconds last year and will be just what the Bloods need. Dylan Quirk, the son of club legend Jason, should make plenty of runs as he returns to Harold Rd. I normally pick the Bloods to win the flag. For something different I won’t. Likely finish: 2nd

Cooking With Bob

Super Evil Bacon Meatball Sub Sandwich

Cooking Time

70 minutes

Ingredients (serves 4)

 500 grams hardwood smoked bacon  340 grams ground beef  250 grams ground pork  2 teaspoons salt  2 teaspoons smoked paprika  2 teaspoons dry oregano  ½ teaspoon ground fennel  ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper  ½ teaspoon, or more to taste, crushed red pepper  1 egg  100 grams shredded mozzarella cheese  4 hot dog rolls

Sauce  Can of whole peeled tomatoes  1/2 teaspoon ground fennel  1/2 teaspoon dry oregano  1 teaspoon crushed red pepper  1/4 teaspoon dry thyme

Method Meatballs 1. Begin by preparing the bacon.

13

2. Cut the bacon into 1-inch pieces and place into the bowl of a food processor. Pulse the bacon until it is evenly ground and no large chunks of bacon remain.

3. In a large bowl combine the bacon with the remaining ingredients. Mix gently until evenly combined. Scoop the meatballs into 1½-inch balls, making sure not to compress the balls while shaping. Place on a parchment lined pan and chill, uncovered, for at least two hours.

4. Heat the oven to 400F. Once the meatballs are chilled heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Working in batches, add the meatballs and brown thoroughly on all sides. Transfer to a baking sheet until the rest of the meatballs are browned.

5. Bake the meatballs until the meatballs reach an internal temperature of 160 F, about 10 to 15 minutes. Cool slightly before serving.

Sub Sandwich

1. For the sauce mix the ground fennel, dry oregano, crushed red pepper, dry thyme until tomatoes. 2. Spread some sauce onto the roll and place four meatballs in the roll. 3. Cover the meatballs with sauce and cover with 4. Cover with shredded mozzarella cheese.

Bob’s says melt 2 teaspoons of butter per roll with 1/2 clove fresh minced garlic. Brush the butter on each half of the roll and toast until golden.

Parkfield Golf What’s Happening on the Golf Course

On the 30th of August Parkfield held its first Golf day at Southern Golf Course. The golf gods must have been in a good mood because it was an amazing day, perfect weather for golf. We had around 16 groups of 4, play on the day and it all kicked off with a Shot gun start at 1pm. As the groups walked to their starting tee you could hear everyone was talking about the $20,000 hole in one 12th hole, but who wouldn’t be. As the day went on the weather just got better, not sure some of the golf did as a few start to feel the effects of the alcohol they had been consumed. You could hear a fair few “FFFFOOOOUUUURRRRR” being called during the day, so I think it was lucky we were playing 4 man Ambrose. But overall the golf was played at a really good standard with nearly all groups playing at par or one to two shot under. During the day we had 4 Nearest to the Pin holes and 4 Longest Drive Holes. Needless to say these competitions were hotly contested, with one of the nearest to the pins having 8 different names holding the nearest spot. That isn’t counting one group having 3 players in one group all getting within 1 metre of the pin, but only one could take out the nearest the pin. After Golf we went back to Parkfield Reserve for a well deserved beer. As we all were talking up our golf games the girls had organised a fantastic dinner (Thanks to Jess Spoljaric, Lyn Williamson, Penny Coutts) After dinner we had our presentation to the winners of the nearest to the pin and longest drive winners.

Then it was down to the all important winner. Who was going to be the group that took out the first Parkfield Golf day. Everyone had been talking up their golf and trying to extract information out of their competition. But In the end it came down to less than a shot after handicaps. The winners were Nick Hardie, Mick Hardie, Adam Quinn and Daniel Kennedy who just Pipped Robert Hardie, Geoff Milnes, Dean Hadfield and Brian Burton by .25 of a point! What a finish! After the presentation we held out auction, with Signed AFL player photos, Signed Cricket Player Photos and Golf gear there was a huge range of items 19 that took a few peoples fancy but they most sort after item was another round of golf for 4 at southern golf course, which John O’Hare was so keen to win that he held the winning bid and then up his bid to scare anyone else off. Well done john and all the other auction winners, all the competition winners, as well as to everyone else who turned up on the day to help make the day a great day.

Fordy’s Practical Jokes

TRAVELLING GNOME PRANK

The travelling gnome prank is the practice of returning a garden gnome "to the wild". It involves stealing a gnome, taking it on a trip, and photographing it at famous landmarks, with the photos being returned to the owner.

The tradition was first recorded in Australia in the 1980s by Phil Tibble. The following blurb appeared in the Regular Shorts feature of the Sydney Morning Herald of September 24, 1986: 'An Eastern suburbs gnome-owner was distressed when she discovered her gnome had been stolen at the weekend. A note was found in its place: "Dear mum, couldn't stand the solitude any longer. Gone off to see the world. Don't be worried, I'll be back soon. Love Bilbo xxx.

A SNAKE NUT CAN A snake nut can is a practical joke device that closely resembles a can of nuts, but contains a long wire spring covered by a cloth or vinyl sheath, printed like snake skin, which leaps out of the can and startles the unsuspecting victim.

The item was invented by Samuel Sorenson Adams of the S.S. Adams Co. circa 1915. Adams' wife Emily had been complaining about the jam jar, saying that it wasn't properly closed or that it was sticky. Adams, inspired by her nagging, then invented a spring snake - a coil of wire wrapped in a cloth skin, and compressed the two-foot snake into a little jam jar so that it would jump out when the lid was removed.

Parkfield Supercoach

Well another season done. Some big scores this week and none bigger than Doigy’s 2784 ranking him 74th for the week overall. Thanks everyone for their participation this season and we look forward to the 2014 season. Congratulations to our premiers in Mick Ramsay, Wayne Harding and David Ford. Below you will see the GF results as well as the unique players from each match up. Well done to Peter Ramsay for scoring the highest points for the year and finishing in 208th place overall.

Div 1 (League Rank 172) Once again a Ramsay has one the Div 1 SuperCoach final. This time it was Mick. A one sided final with Mick proving far too good for Swiz. Interestingly both sides played 1 short. Swiz’s unique players all fired last week but only Roughead could back it up on the biggest stage.

Div 2 (League Rank 2334) Another one sided Grand Final with Wank being way too strong for Johnny. Johnny played 1 short and the captaincy choice of Griffen backfired.

Div 3 (League Ranking 9173) A fantastic Grand Final with Fordy eventually overcoming Biter. It came down to the last match of the season as scores were virtually level before this game with Fordy having Murphy and Biter having Griffen in the last game.

Overall Points 51695 Peter Ramsay Div 1 (Ranked 208 overall) 51065 David Ford Div 3 50862 Shane Doig Div 1 50837 Tony Payne Div 1 50666 Mick Ramsay Div 1 50390 Ross Linton Div 1 50250 Andrew Keays Div 1 50208 Dave Swiz Div 1

Parkfield Fantasy Cricket League 2013/14

Welcome to Parkfield Cricket Club’s Fantasy League for the 2013 / 14 season.

Firstly each person is to pick a team of 12. Each team must include 5 Batsmen, 1 Wicket-Keeper 3 All-Rounders, and 3 Bowlers from the list provided on Page 28 of the Parkfield Press.

Each team will have a salary cap of $200,000. The lowest a player is priced is $5,000 with the highest priced player being current club champion Steven Spoljaric at $50,000.

After each Senior game points will be awarded for runs, wickets, catches, run- outs and stumpings. Points will be weighted depending on what grade a player is playing in, the higher the grading, the better the weighting. (Note that scores from Junior, Master and games, as well as finals will not be included)

This year the scoring system will work as follows:

BATSMEN 1 Run 0.1 points

BOWLER

Unassisted Wicket (Bowled & LBW) 2 points Assisted Wicket (Catch & Stumping) 1 point

FIELDING / WICKET KEEPER

Catch 1 point

Unassisted Run Out 2 points Assisted Run Out 1 point

Stumping 1 point

GRADE WEIGHTING

Turf 1 x 1.2 Turf 4 x 1.1 B Grade No weighting E Grade x 0.9 G Grade x 0.4 27

Players that play in Turf grades will have their score increased as the standard is higher and there is also a higher chance of games being called off due to weather. G Grade plays 9 more games than other grades so a weighting of 0.4 is applied.

We have updated player lists to include what each player would have scored under this scoring system. When setting prices, the Fantasy League Committee took into account scores from the three seasons. New players to the club who are not on the Parkfield Player List on Page 28 will be priced at $5,000.

The Parkfield Press has included a brief review on some of the players for this season on Page 30. This is a must read for the serious Fantasy League player or any new player to the club.

Teams need to be entered by Round 2 game day (Saturday 19th October).

Teams can be entered by filling out the Parkfield Fantasy Cricket League entry form and giving it or emailing it Parkfield Fantasy Cricket League Co-ordinator David Swierzbiolek at [email protected]

Scores will be updated in future editions of the Parkfield Press and on the notice board at Dunblane Reserve. The team with the highest overall score at the end of the season will win the league. There will be no cost to enter the Parkfield Fantasy Cricket League for 2013/14.

*** Entries Close on Saturday 19th October (Round 2) ***

Parkfield Fantasy Cricket League Player Form Guide

When choosing a Fantasy League side the unknowns makes picking the team so difficult (which players are in form, which player is going to have a breakout, are the proven performers still going to score). The Parkfield Press takes a look at a few of these players, to aid in picking this season’s Parkfield fantasy team.

PLAYERS TO LOCK IN: Stephen Spoljaric - The Champ is missed out on a third Wookey Medal last season, just! Scored a lazy 140 Fantasy Points last season. Wouldn’t matter if he cost $100,000, he is the first player you should pick.

Darren Linton – How no one had Dags last season is beyond us. Even the great man didn’t pick himself. Nearly cracked the 100 point barrier last season and will have no problem destroying synthetic attacks again this season. Get on!

WATCH PRESASON FORM / CONSIDER: Travis D’Souza - Will miss the first half of the season which means no scoring til atleast Round 4, however he scored most of his points in January and February when the wickets were turning. If he can approve again he will be a must have after finishing as the third best bowler this season.

Bob Carr / Jordan Leech - Both these guys come to Australia with big wraps on them, however with all Internationals players, it all depends how they settle into life in Australia. We think you could take one, choosing will be the hard part.

David Swierzbiolek - Dominated one day grade last season and any player that opens the batting, wicket keep and bowls in the same game is going to score well. G Grade makes him even more appealing however now comes with a 0.4 weighting on his score so will need to double his output this season. Risky!

NOT WORTH THE PUNT: Jason Noyahr / Wayne Perera - Both these guys were stars in their respective grades last season however will be absent for the majority of this season.

Luke Wanless - Pukey looked great when he played last season however with more trips planned to Poland this season, its best to stay clear of Wanless again this season.

Shane Doig - Made his Yarraman debut last season and watched his bowling go sailing over the fence on multiple occasions. Even at this price it has to be a no! 31

Parkfield Greyhounds

Parkfield Champ During the off season he broke his maiden at Bendigo only at $3 so not to good. A few starts later he was a naughty by turning his head during a race which meant he was to trial in front of a steward before he goes back to the track. He had his trial and passed now after 2 months off he is racing tomo at Bendigo which I give him a hope. This prep he will b trained to get over more ground for cup day.

Parkfield Pirate Ran a couple of good placing at big odds at the meadows but no wins during the off season. In August he was spelled with a little injury plus he had about 40 starts so deserved a rest. He is back in work now running his best ever trial time last week so he is primed for a 1st up win in a weeks time so look out for him.

Parkfield Puppy Is growing very well with her bro looks to b a good size bitch in the making. Also a very good buy when you hear the great Miata going to the same sire as we have bought. Price of pups with the same sire would of went up 30% after miata chose barcia bale.
