Anton Cilia, Zebbug, Malta; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Recent records of Noctuoidea from Malta are given. Five noctuid species are recorded from Europe for the first time: Eublemma conistrota Hampson, 1910, Eiiblemma deserti Rothschild, 1909, Anumeta hilgerti (Rothschild 1909), Hadiila deserticula (Hampson 1905), and Eiixoa canariensis Rebel, 1902. New synonyms are stated: Leptosia velocissima f. tarda Turati, 1926, syn. n. and Leptosia griseimargo Warren, 1912, syn. n., both synonyms of Metachrostis velox (Hübner, 1813); and Pseudohadena (Eremohadena) roseonitens espugnensis Lajonquiere, 1964, syn. n., a synonym of P. (E.) roseonitens roseonitens (Oberthür, 1887). A new subspecies of Xylena exsoleta (Linneaus, 1758), Xylena exsoleta maltensis ssp. n., is established. The literature on Maltese Noctuoidea is reviewed and erronuousely reported species are indicated. -

In a previous paper (YOSHIDA 1980), seasonal fluctuations of the moth community and the predominant species were compared among the four· stands. As a second report the present paper deals with soml charactelistics on the faunal make-up. Before going further, the author wishes to express his sincere thanks to Mr. Masanori J. TODA and Professor Sh6ichi F. SAKAGAMI, the Institute of Low Tem perature Science, Hokkaido University, for their partinent guidance throughout the present study and critical reading of the manuscript. Introduction Distributions and abundances of insect species depend on a variety of factors, but whether we focus on food plants and availability, environmental niches and shelters, predators or parasites, by far the most important limiting factor is climate. Shifts in insect community structure have successfully been correlated with glacial and inter-glacial periods (Coope 1995; Ashworth 1997; Morgan 1997), but have also attracted the attention of researchers concerned with current climate trends. Parmesan (2001) and Forester et al. (2010) examined examples from North America and Europe and emphasized that predictions of responses to a warmer climate must incorporate observations on habitat loss or alteration, land management and dispersal abilities of the species in question. For the United Kingdom, Hill et al. (2001) have summarized data on changes in the distribution of specifically three butterfly species (Pararge aegeria, Aphantopus hyperantus, and Pyronia tithonus). These authors report that the three species have been shifting northward since the 1940s and they present maps of simulated butterfly distributions for the period 2070-2099, based on the changes seen since the 1940s. According to that scenario Iceland will see some colonies of these three species in less than a hundred years. -

It consists of three lists: a basic one and two supplementaries. The basic list includes all species inPests and Diseases o f Forest Plantation Trees (F G Brown, 1968) occurring in Britain, to which have been added many others from both the literature and from records kept by the Entomology Branch of the Forestry Commission Research and Development Division. Besides insects the list also includes some mites and several nematodes. This list was originally designed for use within the F.C. Research Division as a source of valid insect names and authors together with a selected synonymy for all species with some claim to forest importance or significance. The species included show great variability in status, some being pests of economic importance, while others are of interest only. -

Usu in 1984. As in Nopporo (Sal<amoto etaL, 1977; Sato, 1985) and Tornal<emai (Yoshida, 1976, 1981), Noctuidae, Geometridae and Noto- dontidae exceeded the other families in number of species. Dominant species were Perixoma saxeum, The7u 'variata (Geemetridae) and Hs{pena tristalis (Noctuidae) in the late spring; Chasm・il- nodes ner・vosa, Chasminodes spp., Cosinia unicolor(Noctuidae) in the summer; Amphipoea ussteriensis, Hordiuecia atnurensis (Noctuidae), Pei'ixoina saxeum (Geometridae) in the autumn; Ptilophonx nohiiue (Notoclontidae), E7zT.nnis golda(Geometriclae)in the early winter. Since the species feeding on broad- Ieaved trees and conifers were rich in the crater basin deforested by the last eruptions, many moth species seemed to have immigrated from the base to tl)e top of the mountain. -

Although such faunistic studies were conducted extensively in the region during the first decade of the early 20th century, there are a few new taxa, taxonomic revisions, misidentifications, and misspellings, which should be documented. We examined 1,276 species in 652 genera, 59 subfamilies, and 15 families. We propose 4 new combinations, namely Arichanna refracta Inoue, 1978 stat. nov.; Psyra matsumurai Bastelberger, 1909 stat. nov.; Olene baibarana (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.; and Cerynia usuguronis (Matsumura, 1927) comb. nov.. The noctuid Blepharita alpestris Chang, 1991 is regarded as a junior synonym of Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758) (syn. nov.). The geometrids Palaseomystis falcataria (Moore, 1867 [1868]), Venusia megaspilata (Warren, 1895), and Gandaritis whitelyi (Butler, 1878) and the erebid Ericeia elongata Prout, 1929 are newly recorded in the fauna of Taiwan. -

The paper deals with faunistic-ecological analysis of Noctuid moths collected in the middle Warta valey near Koło in Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Lowland. The occurrence of 247 species was stated. It makes 51% of the whole Noctuid fauna of Poland. Motyle są rzędem owadów, których rozsiedlenie w Polsce, mimo stosunkowo licznych publikacji, jest słabo poznane. Dotyczy to w dużej mierze Noctuidae. Fakt ten wpłynął między innymi na podjęcie badań tej rodziny motyli w dolinie środkowego biegu Warty w okolicy Koła. Teren ten leży w centrum „białej plamy”, jaką stanowi centralna Polska na mapie przedstawiającej stan zbadania Noctuidae (No w a c k i w druku). Potrzeba przeprowadzenia tych badań wiązała się także z szybkimi zmianami, jakie zachodzą w zbiorowiskach roślinnych doliny Warty. Związane jest to z regulacją koryta rzeki w jej środkowym biegu, sięgającą obecnie do Koła, a także z budową zbiornika retencyjnego w Jeziorsku. Ukończenie tej budowy zmieni stosunki wodne na badanym terenie, na skutek czego przypuszczal nie nastąpią dalsze zmiany w zbiorowiskach roślinnych, co pociągnie za sobą przekształcenie zgrupowania Noctuidae doliny środkowego biegu Warty. Przepro wadzenie tych badań pozwoli w przyszłości na ustalenie zakresu tych zmian. Według ustnych przekazów, w latach międzywojennych motyle na omawianym terenie zbierał A. P uzdrakiewicż — leśniczy w okolicznych lasach. Zbiór jego uległ jednak całkowitemu zniszczeniu. W okresie II wojny światowej, w okolicach Leszczy, gromadził motyle B. -

The nine British and Irish species of Enicospilus are revised, mapped and an identifi cation key provided. One species, Enicospilus myricae sp. nov., is described as new; Enicospilus merdarius (Gravenhorst, 1829) is a senior synonym of E. tournieri (Vollenhoven, 1879) syn. nov.; the only available name for E. merdarius auctt. is Enicospilus adustus (Haller, 1885) stat. rev., and a neotype is designated for Ophion adustus Haller, 1885. Enicospilus cerebrator Aubert, 1969 and E. repentinus (Holmgren, 1860) are newly recorded from Britain. Some host data are available for eight of the nine species. Key words.
