Common examples are that of, plant parts like leaves, fruits, flowers and bark being separated from the plant. Accidental: Accidental refers to the occurrences or existence of all those species that would not be found in a particular region under normal circumstances. Acclimation: Acclimation refers to the morphological and/or physiological changes experienced by various organisms to adapt or accustom themselves to a new climate or environment. Active Transport: The movement of cellular substances like ions or molecules by traveling across the membrane, towards a higher level of concentration while consuming energy. -

McLarty Name and degree of faculty chair: Daniel Gonzalez-Socoloske, Ph.D. Date completed: April 2017 In this study, the reliability of low cost side-scan sonar to accurately identify soft substrates such as grass and mud was tested. Benthic substrates can be hard to classify from the surface, necessitating an alternative survey approach. A total area of 11.5 km2 was surveyed with the sonar in a large, brackish mangrove lagoon system. Individual points were ground-truthed for comparison with the sonar recordings to provide a measure of accuracy. -

FACTS AND FIGURES OVERVIEW The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is home to more than 11,000 animals representing nearly 600 species from around the globe. The Zoo complex is a recreational and education destination that includes the 22-acre Zoombezi Bay water park and the 18-hole Safari Golf Club. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium also operates the Wilds, a 10,000-acre conservation center and safari park located in southeastern Ohio. The Zoo is a regional attraction with global impact, annually contributing $4 million of privately raised funds to support conservation projects worldwide. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Columbus Zoo has earned Charity Navigator’s prestigious 4-star rating. MISSION Lead and inspire by connecting people and wildlife. VISION The sustainable co-existence of all living things. SIZE The Zoo complex spans 588 acres, more than 200 of which have been developed as animal habitats and public spaces. The Zoo habitats are organized into six geographic regions: Asia Quest, Australia and the Islands, Congo Expedition, Heart of Africa, North America and Polar Frontier, and Shores. The newest region, Heart of Africa, is designed as a mixed species savanna spanning 23 acres. ATTENDANCE The Zoo serves as one of central Ohio’s most popular family attractions and hosts more than two million visitors annually. The Zoo experienced a record-breaking attendance in 2014 with 2.47 million visitors (not including the attendance for Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf or the Wilds). ADMISSION AND MEMBERSHIP RATES In consideration of the Franklin County taxpayers who provide support for the Zoo, a non-profit organization, the Zoo offers these residents special admission prices and membership rates, weekly promotions, and educational programs for free or a reduced price. -

L THE UNDERWATER ANTHROPOCENE DOUGLAS J. MC CAULEY cientific dialogues on the Anthropocene rarely extend below the high- Stide line. This terrestrial bias is perhaps justifiable, as we have been altering terrestrial ecosystems since the African diaspora gained momentum about fifty thousand years ago. Today, croplands and pastures take up about 40 percent of the earth’s land surface, while the forty million miles of road (a distance equivalent to 165 trips to the moon) that we have laid out across the world have left less than 10 percent of the planet’s land surface remote. The terrestrial portion of the world has been brought unambiguously under the dominion of our species. By almost all measures, however, the mark of the Anthropocene has been lighter in the oceans. California, my home, provides an illustrative example. Humans assisted with the extirpation of terrestrial megafauna (e.g., eleven- ton mammoths, ground sloths more than ten feet tall) from the region about fourteen thousand years ago. We then proceeded to drive California’s wolves and grizzly bears extinct (the latter our state animal and flag symbol). But today, just offshore and within eyesight of metropolitan skylines, thirty- three- ton gray whales undertake one of the longest mammal migrations on the planet, 550-pound giant sea bass vocalize at divers, and white sharks investigate the palatability of about one and a half California beachgoers annually. While deeply altered, the oceans retain a wildness that has become rare in much of the terrestrial world. What delayed and muted the arrival of the Anthropocene in the oceans? The simple answer is that it is harder to change the oceans— at least for us terrestrial apes.
