THE CHAMPIONSHIP

I n t r o duc t i o n

Inaugurated as the FIM Road Racing Championship Grand Prix, and the

oldest motorsport World Championship in existence, MotoGPhas been thrilling racefans since 1949. Unsurprisingly it continuesto winnewfans as it expandsaround the globe.

A GLOBAL MARKET

MotoGPtravelsthe world, withthe worldintow! It brings the motorcycle racing show to all, as well as featuring the verybest riders from world.

Spain andItaly feature highest on the list, with numerous World Cham-

pions past andpresent lining the grid; the likes of Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo, Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossito name only a few. However, the recent years havealso seen are-emergence of talent from Great Britain with Cal Crutchlow, Australia with Jack Miller and France thanks to theincredibleexploits of JohannZarco. The first everMalaysian

rider has recently joined the premier class, too – Hafizh Syahrin. He’s

now joined by a Portugese teammate for 2019 in the form of Miguel Oliveira, too – both the most successful from their nations. The path to the topis alwaysincreasing the talent pool, too – in Moto2andMoto3, andon the Road to MotoGP. Encompassing many different junior Cups, series andChampionships including the likes of the Asia Talent Cupand

British Talent Cup,the Road to MotoGPprogram is aimedat finding and

developing talent worldwide and continues to unearth some incredible riders andlaunchtheircareers.
Its 19-round season visits a total of 16 countries across 4 continents, showcasingtheworld’sfastest motorcycleracersin threecategoriescomprising Moto3, Moto2, andMotoGP–thepinnacleof motorcycle racing.

MotoGPfeatures the most technologically advanced and fastest prototype machinery on the planet. Producing over 250hp on a bike that weighs less than 160kg results in 0-100km/h (62mph) acceleration in under three seconds, andtopspeeds above350km/h (217mph). Add to this the extreme lean-angles of over 60-degrees from the vertical, and braking forces more than 1.5G, holding on with just hands andfeet, and it’s clearto seewhythe riders’ exploits arebeyondcomprehension.

The 2018 season was another masterclass in racing, as Marc Marquez broke more records andwe enjoyedsome of the most breathlessly close contests of all time. This year, Marquez took the crown in Japan but the competition was tight as ever, with theDutch GP showcasing thebest of the sport in one of the most spectacular races ever seen. Some of his biggest rivals took incredible wins of their own, too – with Andrea Dovizioso duelling the reigning Champion once again, Jorge Lorenzo taking to the topstepinredfor the first time, andthenwinningtwomore.
The pull of MotoGPis represented by the diversity in the nations competing across the three classes of the Championship, including: Argentina, Australia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey, Thailand, the UK andthe United States.

In the intermediate class, Moto2, Francesco Bagnaia put together an impressive campaignto seal thecrown, buthe waspushedall theway by Portuguese rider MiguelOliveira – whoalso wontheseasonfinale before both move up to the premier class. In Moto3, a season-long fight between Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi brought us some of the most dramatic moments of the season – before dark horse Fabio Di Giannantoniobegangaining somebigground. In theend,Martin bounced backto take thecrown, with Di GiannantoniosecondandBezzecchi third beforethey getreadyfor newchallenges inMoto2.
Bigcrowds consistently attendGrandPrix eventsaroundtheworld, with over2.8 million spectators headingto thetrack in 2018 to watch MotoGP.

Out of the 19 Grands Prix on the 2018 calendar, 16 once more attracted crowds of well over 100,000 spectators (Argentina, Austin, Jerez, France, Mugello, Catalunya, Assen, Sachsenring, Brno, Austria, Silver-

stone, Misano, Aragón, Thailand, Sepang andValencia).

The newest event on the calendar, the PTT Thailand GrandPrix drew the biggest crowd of the year with over 222,000 spectators, followed by the Austrian GP at the RedBullRing.

MEDIA COVERAGE

Atotal of 207 countries andterritories receivedlive or same-day-delayed programming of the 19 Grands Prix held in 2018, with total broadcast hours reaching 31,525. Atotal of 9,454 media representatives from 66 countries attended the GPs, with an averageof 498 media staff attending eachevent. THE CHAMPIONSHIP

2018 SEASON

MARC MARQUEZ CROWNED RECORD-BREAKING 2018 CHAMPION

MarcMarquez (Repsol Honda Team) is nowaseven-time

World Champion, with the number 93 wrapping up his fifth premier class crown in six years in Japan. That makes it amore than 83% success rate for the 25-yearold Spaniard as he continues to work his way through the record books, with 2015 so far the only season since

he graduated in which he hasn’t been crowned MotoGP

Champion. The youngest rider to win five premier class titles and the youngest rider to reach seven Championships overall, Marquez is also now one of only four men to have won five or more premier class crowns, joining Valentino Rossi, Mick Doohan and Giacomo Agostini in

that exclusive club.

dramatic not for Marquez’ antics, but for a huge crash at the front involving three key rivals – AndreaDovizioso,

Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, and then bad luck kept

coming for Dovizioso next time out in Le Mans and the Italian crashed out the lead, with the number 93 on the top step once again. Mugello was a shake up as Ducati took their first 1-2 at the venue with Lorenzo on the top step for the first time in red, and the Majorcan followed

it up by the same, ‘Lorenzo-style’ victory in Barcelona,

but Marquez was second and did some good damage limitation. The next racewas set for the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands, and that was one of the most spectacularracesof all time - wonby Marquez.

In 2018 it was19 rounds that woulddecidetheChampion and it began with fireworks in the desert as Andrea Dovizioso came out swinging and duelled Marquez for the first victory of the season. The Italian took it at the final corner of the final lap – the duo’sthird duel and the third win for Dovizioso – but Argentina was up next, where Marquez wasexpectedto be the favourite. That he was, but with start line drama hitting the number 93 and three penalties given to the reigning Championduring a riotous race, it was a Grand Prix that saw him fail to score andcausedsome bigdebatesin thepaddock.
Not long after came the battle for the Red Bull Ring, which was a spectacular scrap and it was Lorenzo who took the spoils. The Majorcan was on a serious run of form that he followed up with pole at Silverstone, but racing was then cancelled on Sunday. Dovizioso won in Misano to gain some ground but Lorenzo crashed letting Marquez’ second edged him ever closer to the crown. Aragon only underlined that as the number 93

took the win before he finally – on the fourth attempt –

beat Dovizioso in alast lap duel in the first ever Thai GP. From there it was next stop Motegi andafirst chance at wrapping up the crown.
Next time out in Texas, Marquez was on a mission to quell the aftermath and took his first win of the season,

putting him back in the title hunt – and Dovizioso had

had two more challenging rounds since his Qatari celebrations. But it was time to return to Europe and Marquezwas aboutto turn the screw.Jerezwas
That race ended with ahuge wheelie across the line as the number 93 wrote another chapter in his legend, making yetmore history in style.

Racecar drivers for a day Dovizioso and Lorenzo, at the wheel of the CUPRA TCR Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo, MotoGP riders for Ducati Corse and CUPRA ambassadors, take the brand’s competition car for a spin Both agree on emphasising the agility, power and sequential gearbox of the CUPRA TCR Pepe Oriola and Jordi Gené, racers and brand ambassadors, ride shotgun with them in this experience at the Castellolí track Martorell, 05-07-2018.– We’re used to seeing them racing on their motorcycles and taking corners with their knee grazing the asphalt. Whether it’s on two or four wheels, Ducati Corse MotoGP racers and CUPRA ambassadors Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo are motoring enthusiasts and didn’t hesitate in exchanging vehicles for a day. The challenge: take the CUPRA TCR for a drive following the instructions of CUPRA team racer Pepe Oriola and brand ambassador Jordi Gené. - From handlebars to steering wheel: “You want the same thing whether you’re driving a car or riding a motorcycle – when you’re on the track you want to be the fastest. The difference is that the car makes you feel safer; it gives you more stability”, says Andrea Dovizioso as he walks over to the CUPRA TCR on the track of the Castellolí circuit. Jorge Lorenzo adds: “When riders make the switch to four wheels it doesn’t take us long to gather pace and pick up speed”. With the same enthusiasm, they both put on their helmet and start the engine to check the engine response – in just 5.2 seconds the CUPRA TCR reaches 100 km/h.

Press Release For Immediate Dissemination 1.1 Malaysian Grand Prix race report MIGUEL AND MAHINDRA MAKE RACING HISTORY IN MALAYSIA 1.2 Sepang, Malaysia, October 13, 2013: Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira made history for India’s first and only motorcycle constructor in international motorcycle racing today, fighting back from a weak start to claim a first-ever top-three podium finish for Mahindra’s MGP3O Moto3™ racer. The 18-year-old from Pragal qualified on the second row, but bogged down off the line, near the back of 32 riders into the first turn, and finished the first lap in 14th place. But he was already cutting his way through, and by lap five was with the big leading group and still gaining places. On lap three, he set a new lap record, for the third time this year. By the mid-point of the 18-lap, 99.864-km race at the Sepang circuit outside the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, Miguel was moving to fourth in a fearsome close group, and then to third. But positions were changing from corner to corner as the top championship contenders fought tooth and nail. There were still six in contention as they started a thrilling last lap. Oliveira fought like a tiger to retain third place, the first rostrum for the MGP3O in its first season of racing. The 250cc single- cylinder machine, still in its first year of development, was designed and built in record time over the winter, and has threatened the top machines ever since its debut. Miguel was just 0.408 seconds behind winner Luis Salom (KTM).

Andrea Dovizioso forced to retire after a crash. Two weeks after his Mugello triumph, Jorge Lorenzo today made it two in a row by winning the Catalan GP at the Montmeló circuit. The rider from Mallorca, who started from pole, moved into the lead of the race on lap 2 when he passed Marquez, and then firmly held onto that position right until the chequered flag, finishing over four seconds ahead of his Honda rival. It was an unfortunate race for Andrea Dovizioso, who also started from the front row after going third-quickest in qualifying yesterday. The Italian crashed under braking for Turn 5 when he was in third and had to retire. Lorenzo has now moved up to seventh place in the overall standings on 66 points, followed by Dovizioso with the same haul, while Ducati now lie second overall in the Constructors´ championship with 132 points. The next race of the MotoGP World Championship will be in the Netherlands, in two weeks time, at the Assen circuit for the Dutch TT from 29th June to 1st July. Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team #99) - 1st “Today´s win was really fantastic! We showed that we can win not only by entering the first turn in first place, but also by recovering and overtaking the others. It was actually a complicated race because I got off to a bad start and lost a lot of metres to Marquez, but I told myself that the race was long and I had to keep calm.
