INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 2016 "AN ACT OF KINDNESS - ROSES FOR PEACE", 24TH SEPTEMBER 2016, MELAKA, MALAYSIA To commemorate IDP2016, World Youth Foundation will be organizing "An Act of Kindness - Roses for Peace" on 24th September 2016, along the river banks of the Malacca River, Melaka, Malaysia. "An Act of Kindness - Roses for Peace" is expected to spread the universal message of kindness, love, peace and harmony as advocated by the United Nations International Day of Peace. World Youth Foundation hopes the initiative will help create a positive impact in building blocks of sustainable peace for the world we want. Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer opportunities are now open for young people (who are currently residing in Malaysia only) between the age of 12- 25 years old. Kindly share and spread widely. ASIA-EU VOLUNTEER EXCHANGE PROGRAMME "EDUCATION AND CULTURE", 1st - 30th NOVEMBER 2016, ROMANIA People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community for others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. World Youth Foundation has the pleasure to inform you that the Foundation with its European partner will be organizing the Asia-EU Volunteer Exchange Programme under the theme "Education and Culture" from 1st - 30th November 2016. This programme is open to MALAYSIANS aged 18-27 years. Selected volunteers will be provided with shared accommodation, kitchen and laundry services, and a small monthly allowance. Participants are responsible for the airfare, visa and incidental expenses. A total number of 4 volunteers (with a gender balance) will be selected to attend the volunteer exchange programme. More details on the Volunteer Exchange Programme including the Concept Note, Application Form, Call for Participation, etc. can be found at the following link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0ByEHb3bCYJLSODFoSXlNaE9kSlk WYF PARTICIPATES ON 3rd ANNUAL ASLI-CPPS MALAYSIA YOUTH PUBLIC POLICY ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION: THE CHALLENGE OF RETAINING TALENT IN MALAYSIA World Youth Foundation had the pleasure to participate at the recently concluded 3rd Annual ASLI-CPPS Malaysia Youth Public Policy Roundtable Discussion: The Challenge of Retaining Talent in Malaysia organised, by the Centre for Public Policy Studies Malaysia. The aim of the roundtable discussion was to identify and understand the perceptions, concerns and desires of young people as they relate to the issue of the outflow of talent in Malaysia. The outcome of the discussion will be developed into a policy document which will be shared with relevant stakeholders for consideration in formulating solutions to this problem. The event was attended by Dr Hanif Abdullah and Mr Sree Mathan of World Youth Foundation. #youthday #youthgoals #sdgs #globalgoals SECRETARY-GENERAL TO YOUTH: THROUGH YOU WE CAN DELIVER LASTING SOLUTIONS TO GLOBAL CHALLENGES The new secretariat of the Commonwealth Youth Council was launched in Malaysia at a ceremony attended by Patricia Scotland, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. The youth council is composed of representatives of national youth bodies from the 53 member countries of the Commonwealth. It is the representative voice of more than 1.2 billion young people. Kishva Ambigapathy, who was elected as Chairperson at the Commonwealth Youth Forum in Malta in November 2015, presided over the ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital. Thanking the government for its support to establish the secretariat, Mr Ambigapathy said today was a "proud moment for Malaysia". "The Commonwealth Youth Council amplifies the voice of young people at the grassroots and among marginalised groups so they can be heard at the executive level by policy-makers," he said. Dr Hanif Abdullah, represented World Youth Foundation to the event. The event saw the participation of approx 200 youths from all over Malaysia which was also attended by Dato' Seri SK Devamany (Deputy Minister in PM's Department). WYF is a member of the Commonwealth Youth Council. See more at here. "WHAT ARE YOUR YOUTH GOALS?" CAMPAIGN IN CONJUNCTION WITH INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2016 The theme of the 2016 International Youth Day was "The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production". It focuses on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production. Today, more than ever, the realities of 1.8 billion youth and adolescents represent a dynamic, informed, and globally connected engine seeking for change. Integrating their needs, their rights to choice and their voices in the new agenda, will be a key factor for success. It's now time to ensure inclusive growth, livelihoods and rising real incomes for all and measured in ways that go beyond GDP and account for human well-being, sustainability and equity. World Youth Foundation successfully organized "What Are Your Youth Goals?" a virtual Campaign in conjunction with International Youth Day 2016. UN LAUNCHES OPEN ONLINE COURSE FOR SDG AWARENESS The UNDP Massive Open Online Course marks the first knowledge product to combine the 17 SDGs with China's current situation and seeks for the goals to be broken down into actual projects for the Chinese government and the corporate sector. The UNDP in China launched an open course to promote public engagement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in China on Aug. 4 in Beijing, less than one year after the SDGs were adopted. The UNDP Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Goals marks the first knowledge product to combine the global agenda with China's current situation. UN WOMEN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PHUMZILE MLAMBO- NGCUKA CELEBRATES WOMEN'S MONTH IN SOUTH AFRICA This year South Africa is marking several important milestones for women's rights, including the 60th anniversary of the 1956 "women's march", which convened 20,000 women of all races marching to South Africa's Union Buildings to protest apartheid laws requiring black women to carry permits to be able to work in or pass through 'white' areas'; the 40th anniversary of the Soweto uprising; and the 20th anniversary of South Africa's Constitution. Read more stories at here. WHY 'PARTNERSHIPS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT' COUNTS AS AN ESSENTIAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL Of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the 17th is the odd one out. As "Partnerships for the Goals", it is a goal that helps you get to the other 16 goals. For most businesses committed to sustainable development, however, this 17 th goal may be the most essential - and challenging - one to accomplish. See more at here. GLOBAL YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IS ON THE RISE AGAIN The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that the global youth unemployment rate is expected to reach 13.1 per cent in 2016 and remain at that level through to 2017 (up from 12.9 per cent in 2015). The ILO's World Employment and Social Outlook 2016, Trends for Youth report shows that as a result, the global number of unemployed youth is set to rise by half a million this year to reach 71 million (table 1) - the first such increase in 3 years. More info at here. HOW EARLY MARRIAGE AFFECTS OUR GIRLS? #DidYouKnow an estimated 17.4 million girls under 18 are married every year? This translates to more than 47,000 girls married each day, which means that almost 2,000 girls have become child brides in the last hour alone! Every second counts in our efforts to bring an end to this human rights violation, which is why we are working together with UNICEF to accelerate action to end child marriage and help protect the rights of millions of the world's most vulnerable girls. #HumanRights #EndChildMarriage #GlobalGoals TANZANIA MAKES CHILD MARRIAGE PUNISHABLE BY 30 YEARS WITH NEW LAWS It's a win for all girls and parents in Tanzania as their government made child marriages officially illegal in the country. According to Tanzania's attorney general George Masaju, this move aims "to create a better environment for our school girls to finish their studies without any barriers." For years, Tanzanian girls as young as seven years old are married off to older men so their families would have money. The country also had one of the highest adolescent pregnancy and birth rates between the ages of 15 and 19. Moreover, they are often victims of sexual and domestic violence, as well as become at risk of contracting HIV. Read more at here.
