Scot Validates No. 1 Ranking at Colonial Adam Scot didn’t have to work very hard to overtake Tiger Woods for the No. 1 spot in the Ofcial World Golf Ranking, but he had to fght like heck to keep it. Four-over par afer the frst nine holes on Thursday at the Crowne Plaza Invitatonal at Colonial, Scot rallied with back-to-back 66s on the weekend, and then defeated Jason Dufner with a birdie on the third playof hole Sunday to capture his 11th PGA TOUR ttle and fourth in the state of Texas. The 33-year-old Australian became the frst golfer to win all four Texas TOUR events, completng the Texas Slam in just 7-1/2 seasons (Shell Houston Open, 2007; EDS Byron Nelson Championship, 2008; Valero Texas Open, 2010; Colonial, 2014). Afer fnishing a disappointng 38th at THE PLAYERS, Scot sat out the HP Byron Nelson Championship the following week, yet that was apparently enough to climb past the injured Woods into the top spot. With reigning FedExCup and Race to Dubai champion Henrik Stenson right on his heels, Scot decided to play the Colonial in hopes of extending his reign, and the gamble paid of. Stenson fnished ted for seventh at the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour, and would’ve become the second new No. 1 in as many weeks had Scot not fnished 13th or higher at the Colonial. Scot took care of his business, however, becoming just the second player to win the week afer rising to No. 1 in the world rankings (Ian Woosnam was the frst in 1991). Scot played the fnal 66 holes (including the playof) in 15-under par, despite a double-bogey at the ninth hole on Sunday. He bounced back with birdies on holes 11, 12, and 14 to get to 9 under and then sunk a must-have 14-foot birdie put on the second playof hole to extend the match with Dufner. His approach on the third playof hole (the par-4 18th) setled just 7 feet from the cup, setng up his clinching birdie put. McIlroy Proves Breaking Up Isn’t So Hard to Do Just days afer an emotonal press conference confrming his breakup with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, Rory McIlroy rallied from seven shots back in the fnal round to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in England. The two-tme major champion fred a 6-under-par 66 to cap the largest fnal-round comeback of his career on any tour. Fellow Irishman Shane Lowry fnished one shot back in second place at 13-under 275, while Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and England’s Luke Donald shared third at 12 under. McIlroy was close to tears when he met with the media prior to the tournament, explaining why he broke of his engagement to Wozniacki only a few days afer the couple sent out wedding invitatons. McIlroy said the breakup was mutual and in the best interest of both partes, who had been datng since 2011. In a prior statement, he had taken the blame for the split. McIlroy entered the BMW having compiled nine top-10 fnishes in his previous 10 ofcial stroke-play events around the world. Tiger to Skip U.S. Open; Targets Return This Season On Wednesday, Tiger Woods released a statement on his website, www.tgerwoods.com, confrming what everyone already suspected—that he’ll miss the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 (June 12- 15). Woods is stll rehabbing afer undergoing microdiscectomy surgery for a pinched nerve in his back on March 31. He reportedly has not begun taking full swings yet and has not played a compettve round of golf since March 9 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. This marks the sixth major championship Tiger has missed due to injury in the last six years, and the second this season (Tiger had to sit out The Masters in April). Tiger’s own tournament, the Quicken Loans Natonal beneftng the Tiger Woods Foundaton, is June 26-29th, but Tiger gave no indicaton whether he’d return in tme for that tournament or the season’s other two majors—the Open Championship (July 17-20) and the PGA Championship (Aug. 7-10). “Despite missing the frst two majors, and several other important tournaments, I remain very optmistc about this year and my future,” Woods said in his statement. Monty Ends U.S. Drought, Captures Senior PGA Championship Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie won his frst ofcial event on American soil and ended a few other long droughts as well, shootng a 6-under-par 65 on Sunday for a four-stroke victory at the Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, MI. It was the European Ryder Cup hero’s frst win as a senior and frst victory since capturing the 2007 European Open on the European Tour. It was also his frst major of any kind—Monty had been 0 for 71 in the four ofcial majors on the regular tour, including several close calls in the U.S., among them three runner-up fnishes in the U.S. Open (1994, ’97, 2006). Tom Watson, bidding to become the oldest player to win a senior event of any kind at age 64, fnished alone in second following a 65 of his own. Jay Haas (67) and Bernhard Langer (70) ted for third. 11-Year-Old Li Becomes Youngest Ever to Qualify for U.S. Open Move over Lexi. Lucy Li, an 11-year-old from Redwood Shores, Calif., became the youngest qualifer in U.S. Women’s Open history by winning her sectonal qualifer on May 19th at the Old Course at Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco. Li, who recently won her age group in the inaugural Drive, Chip and Put Championship at Augusta Natonal, shot rounds of 74 and 68 to win her qualifer by a whopping seven strokes. Reigning Kraf Nabisco champion Lexi Thompson had been the youngest to qualify previously for the event at 12 years, 4 months, and 18 days. She went on to miss the cut in the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open with scores of 86-82. Thompson has played in the tournament every year since, having fnished in the top 15 in three of her last four starts. This year’s U.S. Women’s Open will be played June 19-22 at Pinehurst No. 2, just one week afer the men tee it up at the North Carolina resort..
