BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY: COMMITTED TO SERVE A Review of 2015 Marking our 128th year, the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) offered exciting and relevant opportunities for our communities to engage in professional, personal, and educational growth. True to our mission, we provided “the highest quality library service to our citizens for lifelong learning, cultural enrichment and enjoyment.” Our impact on the community in 2015 was visible in many ways, including in the areas of workforce development and financial literacy and in our commitment to improve the lives of area children. For example, BPL offers resume writing and other professional training, as well as access to computers and databases to research job sites and employers. We teach people about the importance of managing money and provide help to entrepreneurs who are interested in starting and growing small businesses. Children, teens, and their parents benefit from our homework help sessions, afterschool learning opportunities, and early literacy classes. Servicing families, youth, seniors, and businesses, BPL is truly a resource that our citizens can depend on throughout their lives. By remaining committed to serve and with the support of our communities, we were able to achieve these goals for 2015: • Library Journal, a national library publication, named BPL a 2015 Three-Star Library • Nearly 100 writers participated in our February Local Authors Expo; • Food Network star Martie Duncan and other Birmingham area chefs created Birmingham's Best Bites cookbook benefiting BPL; • Inglenook Branch Library received a Design Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA); • BPL received a $50,000 Library Services Technology Grant (LSTA) for digital readers for the Southern History collection and equipment for STEM teen programs; • BPL engaged the community during the citywide celebration of the Dali Lama’s visit; • Best Buy awarded BPL $10,000 for teen programming; • BPL Press published Change and Continuity: The Administrations of David Vann and Richard Arrington, Jr. -

Alabama Cravings: The Most Requested Recipes from Alabama Restaurants Past & Present By: Martie Duncan ABOUT ALABAMA CRAVINGS Alabama’s own Food Network Star Martie Duncan traveled nearly 5,000 miles, sampled over 400 dishes, drinks, and desserts, and visited 62 different Alabama counties to compile Alabama Cravings, a follow-up to her award-winning cookbook, Magic City Cravings, published in 2017. Alabama Cravings includes 97 recipes from restaurants around Alabama including a recipe from Birmingham’s Highlands Bar and Grill, winner of the 2018 James Beard Foundation Restaurant of the Year award. The book also includes a “gone but not forgotten” section with recipes from popular Alabama restaurants which have closed. Martie’s road trip and the book were made possible by the Alabama Natural Gas Association. RECIPES Martie went out in search of the most requested recipes from her family, friends, and fans of her previous books. There are 97 recipes in 7 different categories. Recipes include: Lucy Buffett’s Famous Seafood Gumbo, LuLu’s L.A. Plan a Summer Wedding in Eight Weeks or Less By Kelly Rouba for GalTime.com If you recently got engaged and just can’t wait to tie the knot, famed party planner Martie Duncan says it’s not too late to plan a summer wedding. A summer wedding can be put together in under two months, assures Duncan, who shares many of her expert tips on her website MartieKnowsParties. Duncan’s experience in planning weddings on the fly began when a friend recruited her help not long ago. “They got engaged on a Saturday and wanted to get married the next Saturday,” she recalls. “It wasn’t a joke, and we did it! (It turned out to be) a beautiful, simple but sweet and sentimental family wedding with a seated reception dinner for 30. We even ended with fireworks!” Contrary to what one might expect, the planning process went rather smoothly. “The reason it was so easy is because the couple had seen my work and knew my style. They trusted me,” says Duncan, who gained popularity as the runner up on Season 8 of Food Network Star. After the couple first approached Duncan for guidance, they agreed to meet to go over details. “We sat down for one planning meeting to discuss what they wanted and what it would cost. Within hours, I had most of it pulled together because I knew what was important to them,” she says. It also helped that Duncan’s friend had already found a farm to serve as the venue for the ceremony and reception. -

FOOD NETWORK STAR Season 8 – Finalist Bios TEAM ALTON Judson Allen, 30 (Chicago), studied food science and began as a self-taught cook, eventually becoming a culinary- trained chef. He struggled with his weight for years, but recently changed his life and eating habits and lost more than 100 pounds. He owns his own catering business, focused on healthy food and nutritional counseling. He’s been called an “architect of flavor,” and uses the Creole-inspired culinary style he learned from his grandfather to build out- of-the-box dishes with lots of spice - all while fusing together global inspiration and flavors. Martie Duncan, slightly over 40 (Birmingham, Ala.), learned to cook from watching her mother in the kitchen and developed a love for entertaining at an early age. She has traveled the world and her adventurous “life of the party” spirit has given her a unique life perspective. Martie’s varied career includes stints as a police officer, wedding expert and web content developer. She currently fuses her interests in food and entertaining as a virtual party planner, with her own web site and blog. Emily Ellyn, 29 (Orlando, Fla.), a trained chef, studied at the Culinary Institute of America and Academie Internationale de Management in Paris. Growing up on a farm in Ohio, Emily was exposed to the food world as a child and developed her skills after her parents encouraged her to travel the world.
