The estate, enjoyed by royalty since 1166, was once the home of Augusta the Princess of Wales, Mother of King George III and founder of Kew Gardens. Given as a wedding present to Florence & Philip Shephard in 1934, Hedsor House has remained in the Shephard family for four generations. Today the house is run under the leadership of brothers Nick, Mark & Hamish Shephard. Hamish was married at Hedsor in May 2016.     PARISH Sept 20 13 ISSUEISSUE 38 33 JUNE 2012 This newsletter is distributed to every h ouse in the five parishes to commun icate the activities of the Bishopstone Group Parish Council and other local events Test your stamina, or opt for a gentler challenge, to raise money for the British Red Cross by entering the Hope Valley Run Get into training for the Hope Valley Run, in Herefordshire – a great way to keep fit and raise money for people in need. This year’s event, which takes place on Sunday, 6 October, will feature not only the established, multi-terrain 8 mile route but also a 4 mile fun run. The eight-mile timed race has been a regular feature of the Red Cross fundraising calendar. There are hills to test your stamina, long stretches to build up speed and some beautiful scenery to take in on the way as the route snakes through fields, woodland and along ash paths. This year’s entrants will have the challenge of trying to beat the current record of 52.4 minutes set in 2011. The four mile route takes place on the back of popular demand. Like the longer route it will take in woodland trails and keep road running to a minimum. More suitable for those looking for a less demanding challenge . The race starts and ends at the village hall in the picturesque village of Woolhope, in Herefordshire, (15 minutes off the M50) where parking, toilet and changing facilities will be available to runners. Bags can be left in a supervised store during the race and there will be a kitchen providing hot and cold refreshments The route runs through Haugh Wood, well known for its butterfly walks, and is marked throughout with marshals covering all junctions and turnings.

    Quartet Itʼs rare enough for a commercial movie to focus on “old people”—since the core of the American movie-going audience is still 14-to-24 year-old males (with their occasional dates). Still, with Oscar-nominating season among us, one film, “Amour,” is receiving some attention, though it is an art film (in French) made by an Austrian/German, with several nominations, including Best Film. It stars—shockingly— two 80-year-olds, and while the film is poignant, it is also immeasurably sad and will hardly draw steady crowds. Another new film, “Quartet,” stars actors almost as old but in a much sunnier and blithe mood and with direct appeal to the “Masterpiece Theater” crowd. “Quartet,” not to be confused, by the way, with the recent “A Late Quartet” about a string ensemble, is likewise musically themed as it focuses on a stately English home, Beecham House, for retired opera singers and other professional musicians (Beecham being a famed English conductor). Yet this story of seniors is not so much concentrated on ageʼs frailties and disabilities (though they provide some fodder for jokes) but on the homeʼs denizensʼ unassailable love of music and their continued enthusiasm for it. The core of the plot, written by veteran screenwriter Ronald Harwood and based on his 1999 play, concerns the arrival of a once-renowned opera diva Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) and whether she will deign to join a trio of other veteran vocalists to perform in the homeʼs annual gala concert in honor of Giuseppe Verdiʼs birthday, most specifically, to join them in the quartet from Verdiʼs “Rigoletto,” one of operaʼs greatest ensemble pieces.
