A Message from the President and Executive Director

Dear OHS Members and Friends,

We are proud to report that 2013 was truly a banner year in the 116-year history of the Oregon Historical Society. Indeed, for much of the year, our Oregon History Museum was in the headlines and on countless “must-see” lists, as visitors flocked to view “Windows on America,” our world-class exhibition of American presidential artifacts and manuscripts from the impeccable Mark Family Collection. Thanks to “Windows” and our other compelling exhibits and programs—including being selected as one of only six museums across the country to host the Congressional Gold Medal honoring Japanese American World War II Nisei soldiers—2013 attendance at the Oregon History Museum was 26 percent above 2012 and 57 percent above 2011!

Some of the many other highlights from 2013 included: the compelling exhibits and programs that were part of our Oregon Black History Series; a stunning exhibit of Linda Lanker’s paintings of iconic women of the American West (complete with a western- themed opening party where everyone received a sheriff’s badge and a shot glass!); the beautiful physical transformation of our James F. and Marion L. Miller Pavilion; a very successful fifteenth season of the Mark O. Hatfield Distinguished Historians Forum; four more fascinating issues of the Oregon Historical Quarterly; a growing National History Day competition for Oregon students; and a 1,500 mile journey around the state by the nation’s leading Teddy Roosevelt “re-creator.” As Teddy might have said, it was a “bully” year!

We also note with sadness that 2013 was the year in which Oregon lost the legendary Thomas Vaughan, who served as our Executive Director from 1954–89. Under Tom’s exuberant leadership, OHS was transformed, moving from cramped and dusty quarters to our current location on Portland’s prestigious Park Blocks. Together with his life-long partner, Sherry, Tom was a master fundraiser who elevated the Society’s collections, exhibitions, and national stature. Tributes from Tom’s service will be published in the Summer 2014 issue of the Oregon Historical Quarterly to document and preserve his legacy.

We are proud to report that 2014 is also off to a very successful start. Our “Lincoln’s Legacy” exhibit was acclaimed by best-selling historian Lynne Olson as “equal to or better than exhibits at the Smithsonian,” and the buzz is already building for our summer exhibit highlighting the history of Oregon wine! What else can we say, but thank you and “cheers!”

Sincerely,

Kerry Tymchuk Bill Failing Executive Director President, Board of Directors 4 5

Did you know... OHS has 144 volunteers who logged 7,680 hours in 2013. Volunteers fill important roles in every OHS department, though our most popular volunteer post is in our Research Library—56 percent of volunteers work in the library, assisting researchers, working with collections, and supporting our oral history program! 2013Highlights Research Library The Davies Family Research Library expanded its vast collection in 2013. Acquisitions included the archives of The Skanner Media Group and Portland General Electric. A grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation and the work of OHS Archivist Michele Kribs led to the complete digitization and restoration of the 1914 silent film The Boy Mayor. In an effort to share even more of the library’s collection online, library staff debuted a new Research Library Tumblr. The blog features new posts daily and continues to grow in popularity.

2013 Exhibit Series From cowgirls to civil rights to American presidents, the 2013 exhibit series truly elevated the quality and polish of the Oregon History Museum. In January, the museum partnered with the Oregon Black Pioneers for their second exhibit “All Aboard: Railroading and Portland’s Black Community.” The traveling art exhibit by Linda Lanker, “Tough By Nature,” drew crowds from every corner of our state. The first exhibition of the Mark Family Collection, “Windows on America,” premiered in June and was extended twice due to popular demand. Never before on public display, “Windows on America” featured over 100 items from that private collection, highlighting the presidencies of our most iconic leaders from Washington to Kennedy. In August, the museum, in partnership with the Oregon Nikkei Endowment, was one of only six institutions in the nation selected to host the Congressional Gold Medal, awarded in 2011 to Japanese American World War II Nisei veterans.

Education Programs For the second year, the Oregon Historical Society organized the statewide contest for the National History Day competition, which took place at St. Mary’s Academy on May 4. Thirteen finalists traveled with OHS Education Manager Denise Brock to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national competition, where two Oregon students won awards for outstanding entries. The Teddy Roosevelt Oregon Roadshow returned for its second year thanks to the generosity of Wells Fargo. OHS Executive Director Kerry Tymchuk, Wells Fargo History Museum Manager Steve Greenwood, and the nation’s leading T.R. re-creator Joe Wiegand traveled over 1,500 miles to schools and historical societies sharing the life and legend of our twenty-sixth president.

Mark O. Hatfield Distinguished Historians Forum The 2013 Mark O. Hatfield Distinguished Historians Forum was one of the most popular in series history, featuring award-winning authors Michael Duffy, Isabel Wilkerson, Erik Larson, and David Eisenhower. The series had multiple sell-out lectures, and the Society took the series on the road for the first time, bringing Tom McCall biographer Brent Walth to present talks in Bend and Ashland.

2013Highlights Oregon Black History Series Throughout 2013, the Society presented a series of public programs, exhibits, lectures, and events, all focused on showcasing the rich history of Oregon’s black communities. Exhibits like “All Aboard” and “For All the World to See” provided important local and national lenses on American history. The Oregon Black Pioneers hosted a series of conversations with local leaders that allowed visitors to delve deeper into the “All Aboard” exhibit. Programs occurred throughout the state, with one of the highlights being a panel discussion featuring three African American women who served in the Oregon State Legislature. Former Senators Margaret Carter and Avel Gordly and Senator Jackie Winters reflected at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem on their experience serving our state.

Oregon Historical Quarterly In its 114th volume year, the Oregon Historical Quarterly produced a wide range of scholarship, including articles on Oregon wine, vanishing glaciers, and the Oregonian during the Great Depression. The Winter issue included a special section that documented presentations given during the Society’s Summer of Citizenship series. In that ten-part series, scholars and community leaders discussed citizenship past and present. In November, the Quarterly hosted a symposium titled “Death and the Settling and Unsettling of Oregon.” The symposium began with a public talk by Washat leaders Rex Buck and Wilson Wewa, followed by a day full of scholarly lectures, concluding with an evening keynote by Lauren Kessler.

Home Improvements Thanks to the generosity of private donors, the Oregon Historical Society’s pavilion experienced a massive transformation last spring. New carpeting, gallery upgrades, an electronic reader board, and a bright and welcoming back wall graphic (featured on the back cover of this report) welcome visitors and have elevated the Society as a venue for potential rental events. OHS was also fortunate to receive a grant of $250,000 from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust to support upgrades to its environmental and climate control systems which have improved collections safety. This important gift joined others from the Meyer Memorial Trust, the Collins Foundation, and the Henry L. Hillman Jr. Foundation, allowing for the completion of long-overdue facility upgrades and repairs.

2013 History Makers Dinner The fifth anniversary of the History Makers Dinner was held on September 21 at Montgomery Park and honored founders of The Skanner Bernie and Bobbie Foster, businessman and philanthropist Pete Mark, legendary distance runner Alberto Salazar, and sixth-generation family run business Pendleton Woolen Mills.
