Thayer 2 3 A Message from the President and Executive Director Dear OHS Members and Friends, We are proud to report that 2013 was truly a banner year in the 116-year history of the Oregon Historical Society. Indeed, for much of the year, our Oregon History Museum was in the headlines and on countless “must-see” lists, as visitors flocked to view “Windows on America,” our world-class exhibition of American presidential artifacts and manuscripts from the impeccable Mark Family Collection. Thanks to “Windows” and our other compelling exhibits and programs—including being selected as one of only six museums across the country to host the Congressional Gold Medal honoring Japanese American World War II Nisei soldiers—2013 attendance at the Oregon History Museum was 26 percent above 2012 and 57 percent above 2011! Some of the many other highlights from 2013 included: the compelling exhibits and programs that were part of our Oregon Black History Series; a stunning exhibit of Linda Lanker’s paintings of iconic women of the American West (complete with a western- themed opening party where everyone received a sheriff’s badge and a shot glass!); the beautiful physical transformation of our James F. and Marion L. Miller Pavilion; a very successful fifteenth season of the Mark O. Hatfield Distinguished Historians Forum; four more fascinating issues of the Oregon Historical Quarterly; a growing National History Day competition for Oregon students; and a 1,500 mile journey around the state by the nation’s leading Teddy Roosevelt “re-creator.” As Teddy might have said, it was a “bully” year! We also note with sadness that 2013 was the year in which Oregon lost the legendary Thomas Vaughan, who served as our Executive Director from 1954–89. Under Tom’s exuberant leadership, OHS was transformed, moving from cramped and dusty quarters to our current location on Portland’s prestigious Park Blocks. Together with his life-long partner, Sherry, Tom was a master fundraiser who elevated the Society’s collections, exhibitions, and national stature. Tributes from Tom’s service will be published in the Summer 2014 issue of the Oregon Historical Quarterly to document and preserve his legacy. We are proud to report that 2014 is also off to a very successful start. Our “Lincoln’s Legacy” exhibit was acclaimed by best-selling historian Lynne Olson as “equal to or better than exhibits at the Smithsonian,” and the buzz is already building for our summer exhibit highlighting the history of Oregon wine! What else can we say, but thank you and “cheers!” Sincerely, Kerry Tymchuk Bill Failing Executive Director President, Board of Directors 4 5 Volunteers Jerry Aalfs Erin Enos Kathryn Littlefield Diana Rook Al Adams Ann Ereline Susan Malmquist Elizabeth Rudrud Aaron Anderson Vern Faatz Kay Mannion Emma Russac-Williams Emily Antonelli Helen Fedchak MaryLou McClung Steve Schmidt Amelia Armitage Julie Filipski Matt McCourt Grant Schott Susan Atkin Helen Francis Wayne Medford Peter Schreiner Carl Beers Cynthia Francisco Terry Mesa Bob Setterberg Lynda Bell Christopher Frankonis Elizabeth Meyer Donna Setterberg Thomas Bell Alecia Giombolini Androo Meyers Herc Silverstein Jessica Bertling Kelley Gorniak India Meyers Jocelyn Simpson Richard Bishop Jessica Gorton Connie Miller Doug Smith James Blackaby Johnathon Gray George Miller George Smith Cindy Boungnarath Mellisa Hale Madelyn Miller Stella Sonu Matthew Brock Jeffrey Hayes Bob Moore Barbara Stinger Bowman Brown Stephen Heard Marlene Moore James Strassmaier Jean Burlingham Patricia Hogan Bill Nelson Bob Sutter John Burlingham Jennifer Howell Helen Nickum Jacob Sutter Scott Calhoun Penny Huelat Kathleen Nielsen Lauren Tacke Jeanne Clausen Ron Huelat Alysen Nielson Noah Thomas Dick Clippinger Jan Hupman Peter Noah Sharon Thorne Tom Comerford Lorraine Irwin Sharon Norton Margaret Tobin Marcy Coon Jon Jensen Bryce Notbohm Sherri Vacarella Diane Couture Sherry Johnston Kathryn Notson Joe Von Donovan Mary Curtin MaryLou Jones Katrina O’Brien Chrysantie Voreas Sara Daley Sharon Kabusreiter Dian Odell Ben Wager Abby Dawson Seth Kalen Yumiko Omata Barbara Walden Marvin Dawson Kathy Kennedy Savannah Payne Sara Wallace Jeanne Devon Rosemary Kenney Joy Poole Jeff Walloch Jennifer Devon Jan Kessler Carole Quick Robyn Ward Bert Diamond Maynard Kessler Anne Ramzy Sheryl Warren Susan Dobrof Eric Koetting Jeanne Reaves Merrie Waylett Patrick Donaldson Anne Kracke Indigo Recker Lisa Wilson Jeff Donaldson-Forbes Dixie Kroupa Gaye Richardson Stephen Wilson Emma Duffy Charlene Krueger Dan Robertson Melissa Wood Pamela Dunham Thelma Kunowsky Thomas Robinson Laura Young Maya Edelstein Mike Lincicum Abigail Romick Moses Zarkin-Scott Did you know... OHS has 144 volunteers who logged 7,680 hours in 2013. Volunteers fill important roles in every OHS department, though our most popular volunteer post is in our Research Library—56 percent of volunteers work in the library, assisting researchers, working with collections, and supporting our oral history program!
