UMBC Volleyball Club Wins Conference Crown I i The UMBC Volleyball Club finished its regular season with a big win over crosstown rival Loyola, 15-4,15- discuss his research on 12,15-8. The Dogs were led by freshman middle hitter John Schickert (9 kills, 8 digs), whose consistent s i defense and blocking paved the way to victory. The team used a total of 10 players and got strong performances from Dong Chung, Aaron Wibberly and Chris Northam off the bench. With UMBC's starting squad on the court for the first game, Loyola found themselves overmatched and the Retrievers rolled from there. The team, in its fist year of existence, clinched the EIVA Centennial Conference crown and now moves on to the East Coast Regional Championships at College Park. The 20-team regional tourney should help the Dogs gear up for their trip to the National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn, from April 12-April 16. The Ordinariness of Goodness: UMBC Ruggers Fall To TSU It was a warm day at Lake Clifton Park as the Retriever ruggers took on the hated Tigers of Towson State. Rescuers during the Holocaust TSU received the opening kick-off which was perfectly placed by Retriever kicker Jason "Da Cup" Smith. The UMBC pack of forwards stormed toward the unexpecting TSU rugger. Crunch. The first and most impor- tant hit of a rugby match. It seemed from that hit alone that UMBC would have a great shot at a win, but unfortunately the skies darkened for the soldiers of UMBC rugby. TSU drew first blood with a bogus try scored on a missed call by the ref. The conversion was wide left. The scrums were violent, and the backs of both teams showed off their running and ball handling skills to an excited crowd. With he overwhelming weight of the UMBC pack the ball was won often. With a valiant, diving link- Tuesday, April 11, 1995 up from Dan "Brewmeister" Middleton, the backs were sent lose to do their thing. Quick, picture-perfect passes down the line. From Dan to Mike "The Godfather" Amaroso who would scissor with Mike "Admin"' Hoffer and then out to "Da Cup" Smith. The wings for UMBC set their asses on fire in an effort to evade the SS205 speedy TSU defense, but in the end it was virtually meaningless. The UMBC pack (large men, almost all over 210 pounds) pushed, scrummed, rucked and mauled all over the field that day, most of the time winning the ball, but in the end ... seemingly futile. The only points scored that day for UMBC were off the foot of youngster Shawn Riggins who booted a penalty kick through the uprights for three. The final score was TSU 12 - UMBC 3.
