UC IRVINE BEATS PACIFIC 2-1

Irvine, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters (8-10-1, 5-3-1) defeated the Pacific Tigers (10-7-2, 2-5-2) by a score of 2-1. Senior Sara Henderson (Dove Canyon/Santa Margarita HS) scored her second her second goal of the season just over a minute into the match at the 1:03 mark of the first half. Henderson, playing in her last game as an Anteater had a total of three shots on the afternoon and scored the goal on a corner kick. Pacific tied the match at 1-1 in the 26th minute on a goal by Maggie Barsotti. Sophomore Tara Weldon (Los Angeles/Immaculate Heart HS) headed in her first goal of the season off of a cross by Hayley McNallan (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS) at the 61:47 mark of the second half to win the game for the Anteaters. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Swancutt (Simi Valley HS), also in her last game as an Anteater, earned three saves on the afternoon. Seniors Robyn Piotrowski (San Dimas HS), Gina Hintz (Lake Forest/El Toro HS) and Brittny Zimmerman (La Canada HS) also suited up for UC Irvine for the last time.

UC IRVINE FALLS TO CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 2-1 IN OT

Irvine, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters (7-10-1, 4-3-1) lost to the Cal State Northridge Matadors (3-13-1, 2-5-1) by a score of 2-1 in overtime. Senior Sara Henderson (Dove Canyon/Santa Margarita HS) scored her first goal of the season at the 65:19 mark of the second half with Hayley McNallan (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS) picking up the assist. With just under six minutes remaining in the second half Leah Sims tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 84:06 mark. Shannon DeVos and Leila Pate earned assists on the goal. The teams then went into overtime where the Matadors won it on a goal by Melissa Cleal 4:40 seconds into the overtime period with an assist to DeVos. Goalkeeper Karen Comstock came off the bench for the Matadors and had nine saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had three saves for the Anteaters.

UC IRVINE FALLS TO SAN DIEGO 5-0

Irvine, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters (7-9-1) lost to the San Diego Toreros (10-6-2) by a score of 5-0 at Anteater Stadium. Val Strocco got on the board first for USD with a goal at the 9:30 mark of the first half. Brooke Roby earned an assist on the goal. Brenna Mullen made it 2-0 at the 28:25 mark of an assist from Strocco. Lee Ann Klopschinski scored at the 30:30 mark off a corner kick by Colleen Fogarty. Klopschinski scored again on a breakaway at the 81:43 mark with assists to Alexis Obeji and Michelle Rowe. Michelle Rowe scored the final goal at the 85:18 off another corner kick by Fogarty. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Swancutt (Simi Valley HS) had three saves on the night for the Anteaters. Goalkeeper Natalie Bobbit earned the shut out for the Toreros.

UC IRVINE SHUTS OUT CAL POLY 2-0

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters (7-8-1, 4-2-1) shut out the (11-6-0, 5-1-0) by a score of 2-0 in San Luis Obispo. The loss is the first of the season in the Big West for the Mustangs. Junior Caroline Kabe (Palos Verdes Estates/Peninsula HS) knocked in her fourth goal of the season for the gamewinner at the 22:53 mark of the first half. Hayley McNallan (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS) earned the assist on Kabe's goal. Caroline Kabe would assist freshman Kim Lloyd (Monrovia HS) on the Anteater's second goal at the 56:39 mark. Lloyd's goal was the third of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) notched her third shut out of the season while earning 11 saves on the afternoon.

UC IRVINE LOSES TO UC SANTA BARBARA 3-1

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters (6-8-1, 3-2-1) lost to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (11-3-2, 4-0-1) by a score of 3-1 in Santa Barbara. Midfielder Krystal Sandza scored at the 25:03 mark in the first half to give UCSB a 1-0 lead. Emilee Schwimmer assisted Sandza on the goal. Junior Hayley McNallan (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS) scored her sixth goal of the season at the 38:39 mark. Alma Martinez put UCSB back on top with a goal at the 41:59 mark with an assist by Sandza. Jennifer Borchich scored the third and final goal for the Gauchos in the 80th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had five saves on the night.

UC IRVINE FALLS TO CAL STATE FULLERTON 6-1

Irvine, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters (6-7-1, 3-1-1) lost to the Cal State Fullerton Titans (11-2- 1, 5-1-0) by a score of 6-1 at Anteater Stadium. The Titans got on the board first with a goal by Ashley O'Brien at the 10:28 mark. Lindsey Glick scored the eventual gamewinner for the Titans at the 25:47 mark. Kellie Cox assisted Glick on the goal. Freshman Kim Lloyd (Monrovia HS) scored her second goal of the season less than a minute later at the 26:39 mark to bring the Anteaters within one goal. Caroline Kabe (Palos Verdes Estates/Peninsula HS) got the assist on the goal. The game was 2-1 in favor of the Titans at the half. Erica Pryor scored the third goal of the afternoon for Fullerton at the 50:35 mark. Erica Jacalone headed one in at the 71:12 mark to put the Titans up 4-1. Kandace Wilson scored on a breakaway at 82:48. Desiree Flint knocked the final goal of the afternoon in with just over two minutes left at 87:50.

UC IRVINE SHUTS OUT UC RIVERSIDE 1-0

Irvine, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters (6-6-1, 3-0-1) shut out the UC Riverside Highlanders (9-5- 1, 3-1-1) 1-0 at Anteater Stadium. The lone goal of the game came at the 67:24 mark in the second half by freshman Tiffany Scheibley (San Jose/Santa Teresa HS). It was the first goal of her career as an Anteater. Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) earned her second shut out of the season with two saves on the night. UCI out shot the Highlanders 18-6. Goalkeeper Kristen Cocks had nine saves on the night for UCR.

UC IRVINE EARNS A DRAW WITH LONG BEACH STATE 1-1

Long Beach, Calif. -- UC Irvine (5-6-1, 2-0-1) tied Long Beach State (3-7-4, 1-0-2) 1-1 in a match in Long Beach. In the first half each team was unable to get the ball in the net with goalkeeper Chelseas McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) earning all three of her saves on the day in the opening half. Hayley McNallan (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS) broke the scoreless tie at the 56:12 mark with her fifth goal of the season with an assist from Laci Fults (Lancaster HS) who earned her first career point as an Anteater. Allison Wiegand tied the game for Long Beach State with a goal at the 69:43 mark with an assist from Alexandra Rowinski. The Anteaters, playing the final 10 minutes of regulation and both overtime periods with 10 players, had five total shots in the overtimes while the 49ers had zero shots in the extra periods.

UC IRVINE FALLS TO LMU 1-0

Los Angeles -- The UC Irvine Anteaters (5-6-0, 2-0-0) lost to the Loyola Marymount Lions in a non-conference match by a score of 1-0 at Sullivan Field. LMU scored at the 5:26 mark of the first half with a goal by Kellie Schroeder with an assist to Myka Peck. LMU improves to 7-3-2 on the season with the win. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Swancutt (Simi Valley HS) was in the net for the Anteaters and had a pair of saves on the night. The Anteaters will return to Big West action on Sunday with a match against Long Beach State at 1:00 P.M. in Long Beach.

UC IRVINE SHUTS OUT UTAH STATE 1-0

Logan, Utah -- The UC Irvine Anteaters (5-5-0, 2-0-0) shut out the Utah State Aggies (6-5-2, 0-2- 0) by a score of 1-0 in Logan, Utah. Caroline Kabe (Palos Verdes Estates/Peninsula HS) scored on her second penalty kick of the weekend and third of the season to put the 'Eaters on top at the 42:02 mark of the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) earned her first solo shut out of her career in the match with five saves on the afternoon. UCI out shot the Aggies 9-5.

ANTEATERS TOP IDAHO 2-1 IN BIG WEST OPENER

Moscow, Idaho -- The UC Irvine Anteaters (4-5-0, 1-0-0) defeated the Idaho Vandals (2-6-2, 0-1- 0) 2-1 in Moscow, Idaho. Sarah April of Idaho got the Vandals on the board first with a goal at the 25:26 mark in the first half. Caroline Kabe (Palos Verdes Estates/Peninsula HS) evened the score at 1-1 by knocking in a penalty kick with under three minutes to play in the half. Hayley McNallan (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS) scored the gamewinner at the 58:51 mark of the second half. McNallan now has a team high four goals on the season. Lachelle Manzano (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) picked up her first point of the season with an assist on the goal. Goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy (Mahattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had three saves on the night. UCI out shot the Vandals 23-11. The 'Eaters will travel to Logan, Utah to take on the Utah State Aggies on Sunday at 1:00 P.M.

UC IRVINE FALLS 1-2 TO #18 USC

IRVINE, Calif. -- The UC Irvine Anteaters (3-5-0) lost to the #18 USC Women of Troy (4-3-2) by a score of 2-1. The Anteaters scored first with freshman Lindsay Duke (La Verne/Bonita HS) scoring her third goal of the weekend 6:18 into the match. Senior Sara Henderson (Dove Canyon/Santa Margarita HS) got the assist on the goal. The Women of Troy would knot the game up at 1-1 with a goal by Jessica Edwards and an assist by Kelly Blais at the 9:12 mark. Amanda Roach scored the winning goal on a free kick 26:05 into the first half. Sophomore Chelsea McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had a game high seven saves on the afternoon.

UC IRVINE DEFEATS NEVADA 3-1

IRVINE, Calif. --- Freshman midfielder Lindsay Duke scored two goals to lead the UC Irvine women's soccer team over Nevada, 3-1, in non-conference action at Anteater Stadium Friday night. Duke scored a goal in each half as the Anteaters improved to 3-4 overall this season. She opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the game as she scored at 4:53 on an assist from junior Leah Dawson for the only goal of the first half. UCI junior midfielder Caroline Kabe converted a penalty kick at 61:01 to give the Anteaters a 2-0 lead. Nevada's Annie Baxter scored an unassisted goal at 85:49, then Duke, with an assist from freshman Tiffany Scheibley, scored 17 seconds later to provide the final margin of victory for the Anteaters. UCI outshot Nevada, 25-5. Goalkeeper Megan Tarpenning had eight saves for the Wolf Pack, who fell to 3-6 overall. Sophomore Chelsea McCarthy had two saves for the Anteaters.

HUSKIES TOP ANTEATERS 3-0

Seattle, Wash. --- The UC Irvine Anteaters (2-4-0) lost 0-3 to the 21st ranked Washington Huskies at the Husky/Nike Invitational. The Huskies clinched the tournament championship with the victory. The Huskies got on the board 9:51 into the match with a goal by Jaime Carstensen off assists by Melissa Bennett and Tina Frimpong. Three and a half minutes later, Kim Taylor would make the score 2-0 for the Huskies with a shot from 25 yards out. Sara Davis would put the third goal past Sarah Swancutt (Simi Valley HS) with just under 10 minutes left in the half. The Anteaters would swich keepers at the half and Chelsea McCarthy(Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) shut out the Huskies in the second half.

ANTEATERS FALL 0-2 TO #5 PORTLAND

Seattle, Wash -- The UC Irvine Anteaters (2-3-0) lost 0-2 to the fifth ranked Portland Pilots at the Husky/Nike Invitational in Seattle. The Pilots got on the board 9:31 into the match with a header by Betsy Barr three yards out. Lauren Orlandos and Lindsey Huie each got assists on the play as the ball was flicked to Barr by Orlandos. Both teams would remain scoreless until the 75:26 mark when Wanda Rozwadowska of Portland was fouled inside the penalty box setting up a penalty kick. Christine Sinclair took the kick and knocked it past goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) who came in at the half for Sarah Swancutt (Simi Valley HS). Swancutt ended the match with three saves while McCarthy saved six shots. Hayley McNallan (Tacoma,WA/Curtis HS) led the Anteaters with four shots on the night, but was unable to come up with her fourth goal of the season.

September 13, 2002

ANTEATERS FALL TO PEPPERDINE 1-3 Irvine, CA -- The UC Irvine Anteaters (2-2-0) lost to #17 Pepperdine (4-0-1) by a score of 1-3. The Anteaters got on the board first 20 minutes into the game with a shot on a free kick by Hayley McNallen (Tacoma, WA/ ) for her third goal of the season. The Waves would fight back and score at the 26:30 mark of the first half on a goal by Ali Pavoni assisted by Mary Stuart. Ten minutes later the Waves would strike again with a goal by Janelle Hillseth with an assist by Jenna Fodor. In the final seconds before halftime Pepperdine snuck a goal past goalkeeper Chelsea McCarthy to make the score 3-1 with seven seconds left in the half. The Anteaters switched keepers at halftime and Sarah Swancutt shutout the Waves for 45 minutes. UC Irvine was also unable to get the ball into the net in the second half. The Anteaters finished the night with 14 shots while the Waves had 18. Goalkeeper Teresa Montano of Pepperdine recorded nine saves on the night.

UC IRVINE STOPS SAINT MARY'S 2-1 IN OVERTIME

Irvine, CA-- The UC Irvine Anteaters (2-1-0) defeated the Saint Mary's Gaels (1-3-0) 2-1 in overtime at the UC Irvine/NIKE Invitational at Anteater Stadium. The Gaels took a 1-0 lead 23 minutes into the game on an unassisted goal off a free kick by Lucianne Crenshaw. The Anteaters answered with a shot lobbed over goalkeeper Alyson Berger by Hayley McNallen. McNallen was assisted on the play with a cross by Caroline Kabe. The end of regulation came with the scored tied 1-1, the second overtime game for UC Irvine in a row. The game-winning goal came just three and a half minutes into the first overtime on a header by Kim Lloyd. Lloyd was assisted by Melody Mangrello who crossed the ball into the box for Lloyd to knock in. The Anteaters will next face Pepperdine at 7:00 PM Friday night at Anteater Stadium.

MONTANA TOPS UC IRVINE 3-2 IN OVERTIME

Irvine, CA -- UC Irvine lost in overtime to Montana 2-3 in the second game of the UCI/NIKE Invitational at Anteater Stadium. UCI freshman Joanna Irwin scored the lone goal of the first half off an assist from Gina Hintz with less than three minutes in the half. The Grizzlies answered with a goal off a corner kick by Katie Sloan with just over 12 minutes to play. That goal would set off a six minute scoring frenzy with Sloan knocking in her second goal of the match shortly after with an assist to Tara Schwager. Five minutes later Hayley McNallen knotted things up with a goal off of a free kick by Caroline Kabe. At the end of regulation the score was 2-2. With just over a minute to go in the first overtime Tara Schwager scored the gamewinner from the top of the box. The Anteaters had 21 shots for the match while the Grizzlies had six shots with three of them turning into goals. Senior Sarah Swancutt had three saves for UCI and goalkeeper Sarah Braseth of Montana had eight saves. The Anteaters will face Saint Mary's on Sunday at 1:00 at Anteater Stadium

UC IRVINE BLANKS EASTERN WASHINGTON IN SEASON OPENER Fullerton, CA -- UC Irvine got two unassisted goals from senior Robyn Piotrowski to propel the Anteaters to a, 2-0, victory over Eastern Washington in the first match of the 2002 SOCCER TOWN CLASSIC.

Piotrowski got the Anteaters on the board in the 20th minute (19:01), teeing a shot up from 25 yards out and beating the Eagle goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. She added her second goal of the match in much the same fashion, capitalizing on botched clear attempt by the EWU defense and sending a shot into the back of the net from the top of the box.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Swancutt faced just three shots and made two saves. UCI held an 21-3 advantage in shots.

UCI is 1-0 overall on the year while Eastern Washington fell to 0-1.
