3 Introduction

amibia is a massive, desolate landscape and boasts the title of the 4th least populated country in the world. With an average distance between towns of 200km, its endless vistas will be permanently Netched into your soul. Namibia’s desert winds have sculpted the world’s highest dunes out of red sand and it is these dunes that make the Namibian landscape like no other on earth. In some places the dunes rise out of endless fields of grass and in others the dunes are as high as mountains. In a special place the sand cut off the water supply to a seasonal wetland and today the result is the petrified trees of Deadvlei. In the far South, fine silica sands are now reclaiming what was once the site of a great diamond rush - the ghost town of Kolmanskop. To the West, a special combination of rocky ground and hot, arid conditions have created one of the most alien plants on earth; the Quiver Tree. Where the Fish River flows over an ancient plateau, it has cut the 2nd largest canyon on earth into the rock. Join us for an opportunity to experience and photograph these one of a kind landscapes under top professional guidance, from the ground, road and air.

Nowhere is the change that water brings more apparent than where it is needed the most and we’ll be visiting in the rainy season, hoping to witness a few thunderstorms sweeping their dark curtains of rain across the landscape.

Join C4 Photo Safaris’ guide Isak Pretorius and Hougaard Malan from Capturearth in this fascinating destination. Both Isak and Hougaard have been travelling to Namibia for many years, capturing its amaz- ing beauty. Day 1 - 2

River Crossing Lodge, Namibia.

Upon arrival on the 6th of April, you will be collected from Hosea Kutako airport by a private driver and taken to our guest house, just outside Windhoek city. Once the whole group has checked in, we’ll go for dinner at one of Windhoek’s best restaurants. Everyone will have a chance to tell their photographic story and the guides will give a breakdown of the days to come and what to expect.

*If you wish to fly in a day or two early to sleep off the jet-lag, we are more than happy to arrange all the logistics for you.

Day 2 - 5

Fish River Lodge, Namibia.

Quiver Tree Forest

After breakfast overlooking the hills of Windhoek, we’ll hit the road south to Quiver Tree Forest. This will be the furthest drive on the trip, totalling just over 500km, which should take about 5 hours to cover.

Found only in Southwestern Africa, Quiver “Trees” are actually very large succulent plants. With their cracked golden-white bark and remarkable shape, they make great photographic subjects. We’ll arrive at our destination early afternoon, leaving plenty of time for everyone to familiarize themselves with the trees. After sunset we’ll have dinner at the lodge and get to bed early.

The next morning, we’ll get up around 4am to capture Quiver Trees with the starry Namibian skies above. As darkness fades to twilight we can capture the red predawn glow on the trees and prepare to capture the colours of sunrise. Your SAFARI

Fish River Lodge – The World’s 2nd Largest Canyon

After a delicious breakfast at Quiver Tree Forest, we’ll head West on Namibia’s most desolate paved road. Along this road you will see some captivating expanses. About 150km from the coast, we’ll turn South on a small road and head to the 2nd largest canyon on the planet. Most visitors usually go to the national park’s viewing points, but we’ll be visiting one of Namibia’s best kept secrets: The Fish River Lodge, which is perched on a cliff edge overlooking the depths of the canyon. This hotel is constantly rated as one of the most breathtaking in Namibia and it offers brilliant photographic opportunities. We’ll spend the afternoon exploring the cliff edges for foregrounds that complement the endless expanse of the canyon and shoot the transition of sunset colours over the landscape. This location also offers great opportunities to photo- graph quiver trees in case you feel you didn’t get enough at the forest.

The mornings at this lodge will be the highlight of convenience on the workshop as we photograph a quiver tree on the cliff edge from the lodge’s pool deck. After breakfast we’ll have a relaxing day for classroom sessions, getting to know each other and just taking in one of the best views in Namibia.

Day 5 - 7

Nest Hotel, Namibia.

Kolmanskop – The Ghostly Remains of a Diamond Rush

After departing the Fish River lodge on the morning of the 4th day, we’ll head back North and then further West to the coastal town of Luderitz. We’ll spend a long afternoon familiarizing ourselves with the many colourful, sand filled rooms of Kolmanskop.

Situated just 5 minutes inland from Luderitz, Kolmanskop is the long forgotten site of one of the greatest diamond rushes in human history. Just after the turn of the 19th century, German mining companies invested a fortune to build an entire town in the middle of nowhere. Everything from the door frames to the paint was imported from Germany and today the desert is reclaiming this once-glorious town. Despite being flooded with sand, the dry climate has done an amazing job of preserving the colourful rooms. There are well over 25 rooms worth photographing, so everyone can do their own thing. The guides will assist everyone to identify a room with an east-facing window for the next morning.

On days 5 + 6 we’ll get up for an early coffee and depart for the Ghost town in darkness. Hougaard and Isak will make sure that everyone is in place for a beam of orange sunrise light as the sun crests the horizon in the East. After a quick morning shoot we’ll head back to the hotel for breakfast. We’ll return to Kolmanskop just before noon to make sure we capture the shadows of open roof slats under a 1 o’ clock sun, and then have another relaxed afternoon exploring the Ghost town. Your SAFARI (continued) Day 7 - 10

Sossus Dune Lodge, Namibia.

Deadvlei - The World’s Highest Dunes + Aerial Photography

Our final destination is ; a one of a kind landscape created by an ancient river flowing into the desert. Like several other rivers in Namibia, the Tsauchab River used to flow from the mountains, through the desert, all the way to the coast. Thousands of years ago it was cut off from the ocean by the expanding desert and this created a seasonal wetland amongst the dunes. Over the millennia, this wetland has retreated inland as the Desert slowly reclaims the valley that the river cut through the dunes.

As it stands today, Sossusvlei is about 60 kilometers from the coast, but still 40 kilometers into the towering red dunes of the Namib Desert. Although the river only flows all the way to Sossus a few times every decade, the valley still sustains a large population of wildlife amongst the dunes. There is always the chance that we may witness the river in flood and since it hasn’t flooded since 2012, the statistics are in our favour.

Vlei - Afrikaans for Wetland

Deadvlei – At the end of the Tsauchab Dune Valley is the famous deadvlei, which was cut off from Sossusvlei by a low dune an estimated 700-800 years ago. The lack of water, arid climate and hard wood of the Namibian Camel Thorn tree has kept the trees of Deadvlei from decomposing. The result is a collection ghostly trees rising from a cracked white clay surface. The pan is deceptively large and offers about 50 of the oddly shaped trees to photograph. The location can be overwhelming at first, but Hougaard knows the location well and will assist everyone to find the best trees and photograph them adequately.

NB – Reaching Deadvlei requires walking 1.1km on soft sand and over a dune that is about 50 meters high. The climb is very gradual and we’ll tentatively only do it in the mornings when it is still cool. For a person of reasonable fitness it won’t be a problem. Hougaard will always be available to help carry heavy camera equipment when the going gets tough.

Dune Spines - The photos of snaking dune spines are all captured along the 40km drive into the Tsauchab Dune Valley. Thanks to the valley’s East-West orientation, sunset creates deep black shadows on the Eastern side and bright red colours on the Western side of the dunes. This offers great opportunities for telephoto shots of snaking dune spines. The afternoons can often go up to 45 degrees Celsius, in which case we’ll opt for this more convenient sunset shoot.

Aerial Photography - The workshop includes a 120-minute doors-off helicopter flight over the Sossusvlei park. Flying over this landscape and capturing it from above is a once in a lifetime experience and it offers amazing photographic opportunities. The helicopter operator has two Robinson Raven II R44’s, which can take 3 passengers at a time.

The standard route over the park is a 60-minute flight, which doesn’t offer much time to deviate from the route and circle above subjects of interest. A 120-minute flight offers the opportunity to fly all the way to the coast and still have 30 extra minutes to circle above subjects of interest.

11 Your SAFARI (continued) Day 10 - 13

Wolwedans Dune Lodge, Namibia.

Wolwedans – Mountains, Red Dunes and picture perfect African Trees

After a final morning at Sossusvlei, we’ll depart for the Namib Rand. This landscape of mountains, grass and picture-perfect trees on the edge of a red desert is like nothing else on earth. Valleys look like they were carpeted in ivory white and red dunes rise from the earth in the most unexpected places.

Wolwedans is consistently rated as one of the best lodges in Africa and one of the best eco lodges in the world. Expect a unique and memorable 5-star African experience from a team of dedicated chefs, servants and guides. Most of all, expect 5 star photography on the exclusive 60000 hectare property that few people have the privilege to visit. Day 13 - 14

River Crossing Lodge, Namibia.

After a final sunrise at Wolwedans, we’ll say goodbye to the sands of the Namib and drive back to Windhoek. Our last night will be spent at the same guesthouse as the first night, situated in the mountains just outside the city. After check-in and a rest we’ll go to Windhoek’s most popular restaurant for a final dinner with the group.

Day 14

Windhoek International Airport, Namibia.

After Breakfast you will be taken with the lodge’s shuttle to the Airport for you flight home. This unfortunately the end of the safari. 12 Kolmanskop

Photographer/ISAK PRETORIUS

Isak was born to be a photographer, but before he discovered this, he became an engineer. Once he picked up a camera, his engineering career came to an end and Isak has now estab- lished himself as one of the top bird photographers in Africa. The benefit of his engineering training is his flawless technical knowledge of camera systems and the post processing soft- ware that accompanies them.

He combines these skills to focus on bird-in-flight photography; where he has excelled to the point of being awarded an unprec- edented 8 awards in the FujiFilm-Getaway Photo Competition in just one year. His highest accolade arrived in 2013 when he was winner of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year in the Bird Behaviour category, which undoubtedly proved that he’s one of the world’s best wildlife photographers.

ISAK PRETORIUS

Photographer/HOUGAARD MALAN

Leave your long lens at home: When you photograph with Hou- gaard it is with a wide-angle lens and a tripod. For here is a young man who will open your eyes to the world of landscape and seascape photography. He got his first camera when he was 19 and it instantly turned his life around. Within a year of shooting as a hobby he had excelled and learned so quickly that he dropped all his previous career plans to pursue a career in nature photography. He has an unmatched eye for composition in landscapes and is always looking at the skies in search of the perfect light.

Normally landscape photographers develop with age- reach- ing their peak after years of studying light and composition. Yet Hougaard has shunned those years and become a master of landscapes at a very young age. His speciality is landscapes, sea-scapes and farmlands. Very quickly he has established himself as the prominent young landscape photographer in South Africa, with his images gracing many magazines and cal- endars. His easy manner, excellent technique and very devel- oped compositional eye will open your eyes to compositions and light anew. HOUGAARD MALAN

19 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What should I know about vehicle etiquette?

Vehicle etiquette and consideration for fellow photographers:

On all our tours we may ask participants to rotate seats in the vehicles, taking it in turn to sit in the more popular seats in the front and the less popular ones in the rear. This requirement applies to everyone. If there is some reason why you can’t take your turn in the back of a vehicle (e.g. a bad back or travel sickness) please inform our office at the time of booking to see if we can accommodate you. We regret that anyone failing to inform us of such limitations before the tour will be expected to rotate seats in the same way as everyone else.

There is also other vehicle etiquette that we would like to ask you to adhere to. We give these guidelines to ensure a positive experience for all when on safari.

• Please keep noise levels low at an animal sighting. This allows people to enjoy the set- ting and listen to sounds that the animals may be making. Often these alert us to some behaviour and allows us to anticipate any action that may occur.

• If you are seated in the front of the vehicle, please have consideration for the people behind you. A pre-arranged chat at the start of the safari is an excellent way to work out how you will be photographing and working around each other. It provides a positive working environment and allows everyone to photograph happily in the vehicle.

• When photographing, keep movement to a minimum. If you are going to shift places, then alert the others and do so as swiftly and directly as possible.

• Please do not do anything to effect the behaviour of the animals.

• Your driver/ranger has to adhere to certain rules and etiquette at sightings that you may not be aware of. This may mean you cannot stop exactly where you would like. Please bear this in mind at sightings, especially when there are other vehicles from other camps around.

2. What technical equipment or requirements do I need for the workshops?

For workshops a Digital SLR camera is recommended, with at least a 200mm lens to capture wildlife im- ages. A laptop for downloading is also helpful, although we can download image if necessary. On a Photo tour, two DSLR camera bodies and lenses are advised. The type of lenses you take depend entirely on the destination. We will advise according to each tour should you need advise.

3. Are there any extras I need to bring on a trip?

Most of our tours are all inclusive and we offer advice as to what to bring along. This is due to the differ- ent seasons and conditions of each safari. C4 Photo Safaris will always advise if you will be travelling in a Malaria area. If the tour is not all-inclusive, it will be clearly stated.

20 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (CONTINUED)

4. Why do you choose such specific destinations for the Tours and Work- shops?

Each destination is hand picked by us for the beauty and photographic potential it holds. C4 Photo Safaris only travel to destinations that offer the best of what we are looking to photograph. If we know an area holds excellent wildlife, we will take tours there. There are many factors to consider- Seasonal variation can have a large impact on wildlife movements, animal and bird migrations, localised animal movements etc. We of course take all this into consideration, ensuring that our tours are going to the best locations at the best times.

5. Is there any cell phone reception in the areas?

In most game reserves and wild areas there is no cell/mobile phone reception.

6. How safe am I in the game reserves in Africa?

C4 Photo Safaris only operate with lodges and reserves that use the best rangers. They ensure your safety whilst on safari and use very strict procedures when dealing with dangerous animals. Each lodge has a safety briefing on arrival which, if adhered to, makes your stay very safe.

7. What insurance/coverage do I need?

Your normal travel insurance covers you for safaris in Africa. C4 Photo Safaris are comprehensively in- sured for medical emergencies on safaris.

8. For Malaria, which tablets should I take, if any?

C4 Photo Safaris are not allowed to prescribe medical advice to clients. We will advise if the area visited is in a malaria area. You will need to consult with your local GP for medical advise on Malaria and prevention.

9. What about allergies?

Most safari camps are able to handle food allergies but not with the degree of skill that five star hotels do. The best way to handle an intolerance, is to simply avoid eating that particu- lar food as the menus in camp are quite diverse. If you have a more uncommon allergy, like being allergic to eggs, and you know of a solution (like a powder substitute), then bring it along on sa- fari. If you have a deadly allergy, then be sure to travel with your own medication and request in camp that the ingredient be removed from the kitchen and the store. As a side note, it is helpful to remember that many safari camps have to fly produce in or truck it in, over hundreds of miles. Furthermore, the camps, although impressive looking, actually have minimal infrastructure behind the scenes. If you assist the camp in managing your allergy, it will be a great help.

21 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (CONTINUED)

10. What about medicine, diseases and vaccinations?

Please check in with your local travel clinic or doctor for advice. From my experience, a yellow fever and hepatitis vaccination is a must, while the plethora of others are optional. Our safaris are conducted in low risk malarial areas but for your own peace of mind, we recommend that you take a prophylactic. In areas where you get tsetse flies in East Afri- ca, humans are not the primary disease carries, and contracting Tryps is very rare. There is nothing you can do about these flies except to dress appropriately (keep reading) and to ap- ply mosie-guard. None of our current safari destinations carry significant amounts of tsetsi flies.

The camps do have medicine kits and there is always an evacuation plan. We do howev- er find it practical to always travel through Africa with the following items: Immodium (keep this handy when traveling) - Buscopan (for tummy cramps) - Pain killers (that contain par- acetamol and a muscle relaxant) - Antihistamine cream and tablets for any allergic reactions - Melatonin to help speedy recovery from jetlag - Any medicine or ointments that you would normally take at home - Mosquito repellant - A product called Mosie-guard for areas where Tsetsi Flies occur (manu- factured in the UK and Deet does not work) - Tweezers for any thorns or splinters - Re-hydrants sachets (very important) - Disinfectant or antibiotic cream (just for nicks, cuts or grazes) - Plasters (to cover nicks, cuts or grazes)

11. Can I drink water and eat fresh produce on safari?

We advise that you only drink bottled water, which is always available in camps. Avoid ice as this is often made from local water which although is generally safe to drink, your foreign tummies might disagree! It is safe to eat fresh produce.

12. What about food on safari?

Both East and much of Southern Africa was a British colony and as such, you can expect that type of cuisine. The breakfasts usually consist of cereals and a hot English breakfast. Lunch- es are usually light with a variety of salads and always a meat option. Dinners are traditional English affairs usually with a soup starter and freshly baked camp bread. The main course will usually be a roast of sorts, with vegetables. Dessert is usually a simple affair consisting of fruit or a baked pudding. You will not go hungry! (A side note to mention is that between meals there are often not snacks readily available and breakfast is often only later in the morning. You might want to bring a few snacks or energy bars if you have a problem keeping your sugar levels up.)

13. Any luggage restrictions?

The reality is that on any scheduled charters in Africa, there will be luggage restrictions. Short of charter- ing your own flight (which we can do), our advice is to bring only the essential camera equipment. Having too much equipment can actually hinder your photography. Also, you can get washing done in camp and with a fairly moderate to hot climate, you can afford to pack light. In short, bring fewer clothes so that you can bring more camera gear! Depending on the safari you book, we will be able to advise you on exact weight restrictions.

22 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (CONTINUED)

14. What amount of spending money should I bring along?

Our tours cover all travel, food and accommodation costs (unless otherwise stated). This means that spending money can be kept to souvenirs, curios and books. This normally amounts to Euro 10.00 per person per day.

15. Commercial representation and wildlife photography consulting

C4 Photo Safaris has the full capacity to plan and run commercial photo shoots for professional clients. We are able to supply you with the best guides in the wildlife photography industry as well as organize and run all your ground handling logistics for the shoot. Please contact Shem with your request. Additionally we can supply photographers for the shoot where they would work under the production name. On all tours with C4 Photo Safaris, our guides have the right to take photographs. Their goal is to get you into the right position and tutor you into getting the best photograph.
