In all of these contexts, the term “state” is taken to stand for a political project to assert sovereignty over a specific territory and its inhabitants, with ineluctable effects on economic, social, and cultural life within this territory. Whether they were monarchies, republics, federations or centralized bureaucracies, states played an extremely important role in the production of art and in the institutionalization of knowledge, culture and aesthetic practice in all parts of Europe throughout the aforementioned period. By fabricating their visual identity, commissioning works from particular artists and censoring those spheres of art production that they judged potentially dangerous to their survival, states have shaped art scenes in all parts of Europe. Additionally, cultural and educational policies have influenced, and continue to affect, the formation of knowledge about the arts and educational content in the field of art (history) at all levels of education. ese phenomena and topics pertaining to the broadly defined field of art history (painting, sculpture, applied arts, graphic design, photography, architecture, urban planning, curricula and 2 study programmes in art history, etc.), but also to other related disciplines, will be explored at this conference by 81 participant, including the two keynote speakers: Andreas Nierhaus, a curator at the Wien Museum and Mirko Ilić, a New York-based graphic designer. Our participants come from Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Israel, Latvia, Lith- uania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine, the United States of America, and Croatia. e conference sessions have been organised thematically and chronologically in order to adapt as much as possible to the interests of the presenters. Several conference papers will provide in- sights into the situation in the Habsburg Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when this polity played a significant role in the birth of modernism. e largest number of presenters will examine developments in 20th-century art, particularly art from the period between the two World Wars, which was marked by the collapse of great empires and the creation of national states (often in conflict with one another), the period of the Second World War, and the post-war division of Central Europe into communist and capitalist countries. Frequent changes of borders, wars and social experiments across Central Europe make the 20th century extremely fruitful for studying the relationship between the state and artistic production. Separate sessions are dedicated to topics dealing with cultural policies; protection of monuments; the relationship between church and state in artistic domains; contemporary influences of reactionary regimes on art; art in transition periods; and the various ways that countries and states have presented themselves to the world through exhi- bitions. e abstracts for our conference reflect a multitude of different methodological approaches and a wealth of research biographies ranging from senior, more experienced researchers to doctoral students, a diversity that will certainly contribute to intergenerational cooperation and the transfer of knowledge at and through the conference. Art and the State in Modern Central Europe is the first conference with this many presenters to be held at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb in a hybrid way (a total of 43 presentations will be held in lecture halls, with the remaining 31 delivered online) after multiple lockdowns imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020–2021, as well as the effects of the two earthquakes that hit Zagreb and northwestern Croatia on 22 March and 29 December 2020. Despite these challenges, the conference will take place due to the support of the Croatian Science Founda- tion, the University of Zagreb and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. In the light of these unfortunate circumstances and challenges, we would like to think of this conference as an indicator of the resilience of both art history and the humanities. Accordingly, we also hope to create links to the current situation in the city and the conference topic. is is why the Zagreb City Center Tour scheduled for the last day of the conference will focus on the buildings and parts of the city that suffered the most in the 2020 earthquakes. Our tour will not only provide the partic- ipants with insight into the extent of heritage damage, but will also to point out the approaches and problems that have arisen, and will continue to arise for years to come, concerning their renewal. Although coronavirus measures are still in place, we decided on a hybrid model for the conference because we believe that when sharing the same physical space, the connection among researchers is the most fruitful, and enables the most efficient dissemination of knowledge and methodologies. In-person interactions also facilitate networking and pave the way for new joint projects, publica- tions, conferences, meetings, and the like. We are planning to publish the conference proceedings in the next two years. Given the thematic, geographical and chronological diversity of the papers, this publication will assemble a cross-sec- tion of the current state of research and a variety of methodological approaches in the field of art history and other humanities. Is it becoming global — that is, does it have a recogniz- able form wherever it is practiced? Can the methods, concepts, and purposes of Western art history be suitable for art outside of Europe and North America? And if not, are there alternatives that are compatible with existing modes of art history? The book you are about to read takes off from problems like these. Since the Art Seminar roundtable in spring 2005, world art history and the globalization of the discipline have attracted increasing interest. Several books are in press at the same time as this one. A volume called World Art Studies, edited by Wilfried van Damme and Kitty Zijlmans (who also contributes an Assessment to this book) is forthcoming, and, in the odd logic of publishing, it contains a brief essay of mine, in which I contemplate the results of this project. At the moment, in autumn 2006, the subject is still entrancingly disorganized.     GORGONA 1959 – 1968 Independent Artistic Practices in Zagreb Retrospective Exhibition from the Marinko Sudac Collection 14 September 2019 – 5 January 2020 During the period of socialism, art in Yugoslavia followed a different path from that in Hungary. Furthermore, its issues, reference points and axes were very different from the trends present in other Eastern Bloc countries. Looking at the situation using traditional concepts and discourse of art in Hungary, one can see the difference in the artistic life and cultural politics of those decades in Yugoslavia, which was between East and West at that time. The Gorgona group was founded according to the idea of Josip Vaništa and was active as an informal group of painters, sculptors and art critics in Zagreb since 1959. The members were Dimitrije Bašičević-Mangelos, Miljenko Horvat, Marijan Jevšovar, Julije Knifer, Ivan Kožarić, Matko Meštrović, RadoslavPutar, Đuro Seder, and Josip Vaništa. The activities of the group consisted of meetings at the Faculty of Architecture, in their flats or ateliers, in collective works (questionnaires, walks in nature, answering questions or tasks assigned to them or collective actions). In the rented space of a picture-framing workshop in Zagreb, which they called Studio G and independently ran, from 1961 to 1963 they organized 14 exhibitions of various topics - from solo and collective exhibitions by group's members and foreign exhibitors to topical exhibitions. The group published its anti-magazine Gorgona, one of the first samizdats post WWII. Eleven issues came out from 1961 to 1966, representing what would only later be called a book as artwork. The authors were Gorgona members or guests (such as Victor Vasarely or Dieter Roth), and several unpublished drafts were made, including three by Pierre Manzoni.

Izvješće o djelatnosti Arheološkog muzeja Istre u Puli od 1. 1. do 31. 12. 2013. 1 Tijekom 2013. godine u Arheološkom muzeju Istre u Puli, javnoj ustanovi državnog značaja, vršeni su poslovi usmjereni ka održavanju, razvijanju i unapređivanju muzejske i arheološke djelatnosti, istodobno razvijajući suradnju s istim i srodnim institucijama u Istarskoj županiji, Republici Hrvatskoj i inozemstvu. Izvještaj je priređen temeljem prikupljenih godišnjih izvještaja stručnih djelatnika Muzeja. Osnovni zadaci Arheološkog muzeja Istre bili su usmjereni prema realizaciji poslova određenih Zakonom o muzejskoj djelatnosti, odnosno prikupljanju, obradi, zaštiti i promidžbi, prvenstveno arheološke građe i dokumentacije. Radilo se na unapređivanju stručnog, istraživačkog i znanstvenog rada, uz djelatnosti prezentacije muzejske građe. Provodile su se djelatnosti zaštite spomenika i zaštitnih i sustavnih arheoloških istraživanja (terenski rad i dokumentacija) pod upravnim nadzorom i u suradnji s Ministarstvom kulture, Upravom za zaštitu kulturne baštine, nadležne službe Konzervatorskog odjela u Puli. Pedagoško-didaktička djelatnost vršena je u suradnji s vrtićima, školama, visokoškolskim institucijama organiziranjem i provođenjem vodstava, predavanja i izložbi te izradom programa u skladu s potrebama nadopune školskih programa za nacionalnu i zavičajnu povijest i povijest umjetnosti. 2 ARHEOLOŠKI MUZEJ ISTRE 1. SKUPLJANJE GRAĐE 1.1.Kupnja kontaktiranje s kolekcionarima (Domagoj Bernić, Đula Erdeši), pregled i sudjelovanje u odabiru ponuđene građe za kupnju (grafike, stare razglednice, fotografije - s motivima antičkih spomenika Pule, ostalih kulturno povijesnih spomenika grada i poluotoka, te drugih motiva 955 kom. od gore navedenog kupljeno je: o razglednica 466 kom o fotografija 7 kom o diasa na staklu kom o grafika 1 kom pritom su učinjeni i popisi/prilozi kupoprodajnim ugovorima 1.2.
