Perhaps best known for her quirky New Yorker magazine covers and brilliant pictorial essays, Kalman (American, born 1949) has published more than a dozen books for adults and 18 acclaimed children’s books, beginning with the game-changing picture book “Stay Up Late” (1985), which gave visual form to the famous Talking Heads song from the album “Little Creatures.” Since then her works have followed the comic adventures of beloved characters, including a poet dog named Max Stravinsky and Pete the dog, and have addressed important historical people and events with books including “Looking at Lincoln” (2012) and the 9/11- inspired “Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey” (2002).     Carnival-Themed Purim Ball Raises a Record $3 Million for the Jewish Museum Event Honored Robert and Tracey Pruzan and The Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation New York, NY, February 25, 2019—The Jewish Museum held its 33rd Annual Purim Ball at the Park Avenue Armory on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, honoring Robert and Tracey Pruzan and The Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation. The Museum’s annual fundraising gala gathered over 1,000 notable members of New York’s corporate, social, and art and cultural communities for a festive dinner and lively after party in celebration of Purim. This year’s Purim Ball raised a record $3 million in support of the Museum. The carnival-themed event created by David Stark Design and Production began with cocktails at 6:30 pm. Guests immediately lined up to take a ride on the 45- foot-tall Ferris wheel. They also tried their luck at fun carnival games named after the key players in the story of Purim: “Mordecai’s Break-A-Plate,” “Esther’s Ring Toss,” and “Haman’s Balloon Pop.” Prizes included a Deborah Kass “OY/YO” necklace and a BaubleBar gift card. Stilt walkers danced with guests while aerialists dazzled the crowd from high above. Hors d'oeuvres were served on spinning, illuminated Ferris wheel and elephant trays designed and fabricated by Peter Callahan, Peter Callahan Catering/PCK. The night’s signature drink was “Esther’s Elixir,” made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, cucumber, lemon, and turmeric syrup. An exhibition opening May 2 at the Memorial Art Gallery showcases other recent work by Kalman—more than 50 original illustrations for a 2005 edition of the classic writer’s handbook A The Elements of Style. Kalman’s serendipitous encounter with an old copy of the book in a Cape Cod antique shop led to a visual rethinking of the rules of writing that William Strunk Jr. and then E. B. White formulated over the years, beginning in 1918. The more than 50 colorful and humorous illustrations will be a treat for Kalman fans and a joy for visitors just discovering her work.     The New York Public Library and the Jewish Museum Announce Joint Acquisition of Maira Kalman’s Original Paintings for “The Elements of Style” New York, NY, October 16, 2018 – The Jewish Museum and The New York Public Library (NYPL) have jointly acquired the complete series of 57 gouaches on paper created by designer, author, illustrator, and artist Maira Kalman for the 2005 edition of The Elements of Style. In The Elements of Style Maira Kalman adapts the well-known reference book of the same name by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White (originally published by Strunk in 1918, and revised by White in 1959), pairing her irreverent illustrations with its grammatical rules. Known to generations of aspiring writers and English students, Kalman discovered the book at a used bookstore around 2002. She found it so amusing and subject to visual interpretation that it became her most beloved project to date. Claudia Gould, Helen Goldsmith Menschel Director, The Jewish Museum, said, “Even before participating in the organization of Maira Kalman’s 2011 retrospective, I greatly admired her perceptive, irreverent work. Below them she wears high- waisted shorts, wrinkled through with creases and rolled at the bottom; above them she wears a frilly top. And above that, her deeply furrowed brow, mirrored by the part in her neatly done hair. She looks out, but not at us; her gaze falls to our left, focused intently, unkindly on some unseen figure — maybe a parent (or two) who’s forcing her to stand here awkwardly, to pose for a photo- graph in the yard. She didn’t want to wear this outfit and she doesn’t Maira Kalman and Daniel Handler, spread from Girls Standing on Lawns like her stomach and this whole picture is foolishness. This small, square, black-and-white photograph was taken in 1955. Its photographer and subject are unknown. Yet it’s in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), one of many so-called “vernacular photographs” owned by the institution. As such, it has recently been reproduced in a slim book called Girls Standing on Lawns, a collaboration between artist and writer Maira Kalman and author Daniel Handler. The text they’ve given this pretty, unhappy girl, floating at the top of the page where her picture is featured, reads, “My whole life I have not known / where to put my hands.” Me neither. To say that Kalman is an artist interested in the everyday is an understatement; Kalman’s artistic raison d’être is the transformation of the everyday into something worth holding onto.

    An Art of Loss 13 Tahneer Oksman Abstract This essay opens with a reading of a number of recent autobiographical exhibi- tions and books by illustrator, artist, and writer Maira Kalman. Oksman argues that a close reading of Kalman’s trans-medial, repetitive, and elliptical modes of telling her family’s history between and across various projects and texts, and using images and words, often in sequence, makes room for better understand- ing representations of loss in comics. Introducing two formal strategies apparent from Kalman’s works, ‘cumulatio’ and ‘combination,’ Oksman reads two con- temporary autobiographical comics of loss that utilize such techniques. In Ulli Lust’s Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life (2013) and Una’s Becom- ing Unbecoming (2016), formal strategies of ‘cumulation’ and ‘combination’ help establish how individual losses are set in a dynamic, relational network.
