Seneca’s Shipyard on the Prairie | 11 “A tribute to the heroic servicemen and servicewomen who sacrificed their lives in the Middle East conflicts The Middle East Conflicts War Memorial while keeping America free.”

That is the first line on The Middle East Conflicts War Memorial situated along the peaceful banks of the Illinois River in Marseilles, a city of just T5,000 residents. Etched into an impressive wall of granite panels that line the river bank are the names of American military casualties from Panama, Lebanon, the Balkans, Grenada, Somalia, Haiti, the USS Cole and USS Stark, terrorist attacks in Italy, Greece and Scotland, and the current conflicts in the Middle East. As visitors read the names and honor the memories of the men and women who have lost their lives since 1979 in this fight for freedom, the picturesque river serves as a beautiful backdrop and a gentle reminder to reflect on the freedoms afforded by their sacrifice.

The Wall is unique in that it was built without any support from the American government. Decades passed before memorials were erected for Vietnam and World War II veterans, and the American patriotic community that conspired to build the memorial didn’t want to wait that long. Conceived by Tony Cutrano and Jerry Kuczera, and built entirely with donated material and labor, The Middle East Conflicts War Memorial was dedicated on June 19, 2004. The wall was transported 65 miles, from Summit, Illinois to Marseilles, with an honor guard of more than 12,000 motorcycles ridden by memorial organizers, veterans, servicemen and women, family members of fallen soldiers and other supporters. The event marked the first annual Motorcycle Freedom Run, which now draws an estimated 50,000 people to Marseilles each year.

On the third weekend of June, grieving friends and families of fallen soldiers come from across the country to place dog tags, flowers, photographs and personal items at the memorial. They come to remember, to give thanks, to find comfort, to pay tribute, and to connect with others. The loyal and patriotic parade of bikers continues to make the annual trek to Marseilles, riding down streets lined with flag-waving Americans. They all come together with a common objective—to honor the fallen and support their families. This annual “re-dedication” recognizes new names being added to the wall, and remembers those whose names are already engraved. As each name is read aloud, loved ones are invited to approach the wall, which is the first memorial in the history of the to honor the fallen by name during an ongoing conflict.

In 2011, The Middle East Conflicts Wall Memorial Museum was opened in the lobby of the adjacent Illinois Valley Cellular, the host of the annual event since its inception in 2004. Using items and information donated by family members and friends, the museum’s objective is to pay tribute and tell the story of every person whose name is etched into the wall.

While the Memorial’s name suggests otherwise, its spirit is to support all American lives lost in the pursuit of freedom around the globe, not just the Middle East. Further down on that significant granite panel, reads:

“In recognition to all who served and lost their lives for the freedom of our country whose names are not listed on this wall. We owe you a debt of gratitude. You will never be forgotten. Thank you.”

The Wall is located at 200 Riverfront Drive in Marseilles, Illinois.
