  • Stygobitic Fauna of the San Anatonio Pool of the Edwards Aquifer
1707 W. FM 1626 Manchaca, Texas 78652 www.zaraenvironmental.com FAUNA OF WELLS NEAR THE SALINE WATER LINE OF THE EDWARDS AQUIFER, TEXAS In line barrel sampler on an irrigation well in Bexar County, Texas. Prepared for: Edwards Aquifer Authority 1615 N. St. Mary's Street San Antonio, Texas 78215 Revised 5 February 2020 Abstract Zara Environmental LLC, funded by the Edwards Aquifer Authority, sampled over 21,000 ac-ft of water from 41 wells within 8 km of the saline water line between 2008 and 2014 in an attempt to gain insight to the current status and distribution of organisms in the deep portions of the Edwards Aquifer. This is the second major sampling effort in the deep portions of the Edwards Aquifer, the first one having been completed more than thirty years ago. We attempted to re- locate wells known to have historically produced stygobitic fauna; however, most could not be definitively located. Twelve sites ranging from 111 to 652 m deep yielded invertebrate fauna, including 22 unique taxa in eight orders. Nearly every taxonomic record represents a new site locality for a rare species, and the collection efforts yielded a new species of copepod (Diacyclops sp.); an order of fauna (Bathynellacea) previously unknown from the Edwards Aquifer; and three new localities for the toothless blindcat, Trogloglanis pattersoni, one of which represents a 6 km range extension to the southwest. We collected representative material from 14 specimens of toothless blindcat from three wells, including entire intact specimens at one site and bones at the other two. Although collecting efforts for this study far exceeded historical collecting efforts, neither live blindcats nor material representing the widemouth blindcat, Satan eurystomus, was collected.

  • A Phylogenetic Analysis of the Isopoda with Some Classificatory Recommendations
A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE ISOPODA WITH SOME CLASSIFICATORY RECOMMENDATIONS RICHARD C. BRUSCA AND GEORGE D.F. WILSON Brusca, R.C. and Wilson, G.D.F. 1991 09 01: A phylogenetic analysis of the Isopoda with some classificatory recommendations. Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 31: 143-204. Brisbane. ISSN 0079-8835. The phylogenetic relationships of the isopod crustacean suborders are assessed using cladistic methodology. The monophyly of the Flabellifera was tested by including all 15 component families separately in the analysis. Four other peracarid orders (Mysidacea, Amphipoda, Mictacea, and Tanaidacea) were used as multiple out-groups to root our phylogenetic estimates within the Isopoda. A broad range of possible characters for use in assessing isopod relationships is discussed and a final data (character) matrix was selected. This data matrix, comprising 29 taxa and 92 characters, was subjected to computer-assisted analysis using four different phylogenetic programs: HENNIG86, PAUP, PHYLIP, and MacClade. Phylogenetic hypotheses from the literature (particularly Wagele, 1989a) are discussed and compared with our own conclusions. The following hypotheses are suggested by our analysis. The Isopoda constitutes a monophyletic group. The Phreatoicidea is the earliest derived group of living isopods, followed by an Asellota-Microcerberidea line, and next the Oniscidea. Above the Onis- cidea is a large clade of 'long-tailed' isopod taxa (Valvifera, Anthuridea, Flabellifera, Epicaridea, Gnathiidea). The Microcerberidea is the sister group of the Asellota, but probably should not be included in the Asellota. The Oniscidea constitutes a monophyletic group. The monotypic taxon Calabozoidea is either a primitive oniscidean, or is a sister group of the Oniscidea (Calabozoa is not an asellotan).

ZOOBANK: http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:4817F86A-F0E9-41F8- B841-6B0A5ABE0221 ABSTRACT Two fossils from Burmese amber are the subject of this study. The specimens differ in size; yet, they appear to be conspecific because of the profound morphological similarity. The fossils are interpreted as representatives of Isopoda, more precisely of the group Cymothoida, due to the presence of a triangular basipod of the uropod. Cymothoida comprises parasitic forms of Isopoda as well as many other types of feeding-habits. The morphology in the studied fossils suggests that they are not representatives of any of the parasitic ingroups of Cymothoida. Since there are no other findings of Isopoda from the Cretaceous with the same morphological features, the fossils at hand are described as a new species – Electrolana madelineae sp. nov. The smaller specimen lacks well-developed walking appendages on trunk segment seven; it can thus be interpreted as a manca stage (immature) individual.

Rudimentation and novelties are the two components of troglomorphy, sometimes the limit between them being not sharp.

ILIFFE & Dean A. HENDRICKSON Abstract Fig. 32. All specimens examined have been deposited either in the Zoological Museum Amsterdam or in the From caves and springs in northern Mexico (Tamaulipas and Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels. Coahuila), mostly explored by diving, seven species of stygo- bitic and troglomorphic cirolanids were sampled: four species of Speocirolana BOLIVAR (one of them, interesting in several Sampling sites respects, described as new), the two known species of Sphaerolana COLE & MINCKLEY, and Cirolanides texensis BENEDICT. For all six already known species, the localities are 1.
