Absolute affirmation in La Russa HOF induction By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014 When Tony La Russa delivers his Hall of Fame acceptance speech in Cooperstown, he may experience his most relaxed moment of the past 35 years, in contrast to the butterflies and emotion felt by many inductees as they speak. If he still has a shred of doubt, if in the corner of his mind he still has a bit of insecurity over whether his baseball persona has been accepted, La Russa’s enshrinement should counter that once and for all. It’s the ultimate affirmation he’s a base- ball 1 percenter, square among the game’s elite. I bring this up because through the decades, catching La Russa smile while managing the Sox, Athletics and Cardinals George Castle was a challenge. Most of it was his trademark intensity and concentration while running a game. But a little bit was a desire to prove himself to doubters, never forgetting his was a 34-year-old rookie manager without portfolio pro- moted by a cost-conscious Bill Veeck to run a laggard Sox franchise in 1979. La Russa accomplished a lot in his seven seasons at the Sox helm. Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings October 13, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1937-The Reds hire Bill McKechnie as manager for a reported $25,000. McKechnie will manage the Reds until 1946, amassing a 744-631 record MLB.COM Inbox: Will Reds bring back Cozart for 2018? Beat reporter Mark Sheldon answers fans' questions By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | October 12th, 2017 + 4 COMMENTS Given the season he had and the fact that he wasn't traded in 2017, is there any chance shortstop Zack Cozart is re-signed in the offseason? -- Kevin Y., Noblesville, Ind. There is a chance, but it's not something I would bet the farm on. The Reds could extend their longtime shortstop a one-year qualifying offer -- worth somewhere around $18 million -- and that would mean they would get a compensation pick in the 2018 Draft from the team that signed him as a free agent. That would also likely deter a club from trying to sign him, but the Reds would then be on the hook for $18 million to keep Cozart in 2018. Cozart said in the waning days of the season that there had been no talks between his agent and the club. He loves Cincinnati and would like to return. But he likely won't sign for less than he's worth, and at age 32, he really wants to play for a winner. Did Jesse Winker win the everyday right field spot over Scott Schebler, or will a decision be made in Spring Training? -- @Bennyy_Lair I don't think Winker won the job outright, for the moment, but he definitely proved he belongs in the Major Leagues.

He later rode “prop planes” and “dive- bombed” into obscure hubs as a roving instructor for the Padres in the mid-1990s. His years as a minor league manager took him to Cedar Rapids, Edmonton, Salt Lake City, Fullerton, Maui and plenty of stops in between. San Diego, though, has always been home to the 61-year-old Templeton. He was enshrined in the team’s Hall of Fame in 2015 and will be inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame on Thursday, permanently stitching his 10-year stay with the Padres into a rich San Diego sports fabric. “It meant my life,” Templeton, now a San Marcos resident, said of his playing days with the Padres.

  • Abstract Racism in Contemporary American
ABSTRACT RACISM IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN SPORTS: A PERCEPTUAL AND CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS by Joshua Brandon Dickhaus This study examined subjects’ perceptions of racist quotations from sports figures based on three variables (objectionable- ness, racist-ness, offensiveness). This study wanted to examine perceptual and contextual differences in interpretations of each quotation. The sample consisted of 219 undergraduate students in two separate conditions using the same quotations. Males and females significantly differed in their perceptions of racist- ness and offensiveness. Significant difference was also found between conditions based on same-race racism. Limitations of the study and implications for future research are also discussed.
