    1 Pollination Ecology of Ridged Gourd (Luffa acutangula Roxb.) in VFRDC, Hlegu Min Kyaw Thu Department of Botany, University of Yangon Abstract Luffa acutangula Roxb., a common vegetable, is widely grown in Myanmar to a certain extent. However the pollination status of this species has been still unknown in Myanmar recently. In this study, floral characteristics, flowering phenology, anthesis, pollen morphology, visitors, and their visitation rate of L. acutangula were recorded. In addition, pollination experiments such as selfing, crossing, bagging and single insect visit (SIV) were also carried out. Among pollinators, sphinx moths (H. boerhaviae and T. silhetensis) and Trichoplusia sp. might be main pollinators for L. acutangula. Keywords: single insect visit (SIV); floral characteristics; flowering phenology; anthesis Introduction Most of our foods rely on successful pollination. Biotic pollination provides up to 80% of the world food and the rest is provided by abiotic pollination. Pollination is important for a country like Myanmar, an agricultural country. Ridged gourd, L. acutangula Roxb., is a common vegetable and its fibrous netting is an excellent sponge and also used in industrial application such as water filters. The purpose of this work was to determine the pollination status of L. acutangula in Vegetables and Fruits Research and Development Centre (VFRDC), Yemon, Hlegu Township, Yangon Region. Materials and methods Plant materials The pollination ecology of Luffa acutangula Roxb. cultivar ‘21 Giant’ (Ridged gourd) was studied at Vegetable and Fruit Research and Development Centre (VFRDC), Yemon, Hlegu Township from 11th August 2007 to 15th October 2007.     RIDGE GOURD (Luffa acutangula L.) Ridge gourd is a cucurbitaceous summer vegetable grown throughout the year in north eastern region and is used as vegetables. It is a creeper and has a climbing or trailing habit. There is a wide variation in shape and length of fruits. Cultivars PKM-l, Pusa Nasdar and Satputia are the recommended varieties for this region. Climate and Soil Warm and humid climate is favourable for its growth and development. The optimum temperature requirement is 25-30 QC. Ridge gourd can be grown in all kinds of soil but loam, clay loam and silt soil are best suited for its cultivation. Proper drainage is highly beneficial. Field Preparation Same as in cucumber Seed Rate: 3.5 to 5 kg/ha Time of Sowing Ridge gourd is cultivated both as summer and rainy season crop. Summer crop: January to April. Rainy season crop: June to July In hills of Meghalaya the seeds are sown in April. Spacing 1.5 to 2.5m (row to row) x 60 to 120cm (plant to plant) Manure and Fertilizer Well rotten FYM @ 10-15 t/ha should be applied at the time of land preparation. NPK @ 25:30:30 kg/ha should be applied before sowing. Apply 15-25 kg N /ha thirty days after sowing. Intercultural Operation Weeding: Shallow cultivation should be given during early stages of growth to control the weed. Herbicides such as Paraquat @800g/acre may be used to control the weeds. During weeding and hoeing, earthing up of the vine should be done. Staking: The vine should be trained on a bower with the help of thin bamboo pole used as a stake.

Quantification of seed shape is a useful tool in plant description for phenotypic characterization and taxonomic analysis. J index gives the percent of similarity of the image of a seed with a geometric figure and it is useful in taxonomy for the study of relationships between plant groups. Geometric figures used as models in the Cucurbitales are the ovoid, two ellipses with different x/y ratios and the outline of the Fibonacci spiral. The images of seeds have been compared with these figures and values of J index obtained. The results obtained for 29 species in the family Cucurbitaceae support a relationship between seed shape and species ecology. Simple seed shape, with images resembling simple geometric figures like the ovoid, ellipse or the Fibonacci spiral, may be a feature in the basal clades of taxonomic groups.

It is commonly present in the waste land also. This plant fruit portion is valuable for hypoglycaemic, antiulcer, anti pyretic, and anti hypertensive effect. In this present review is focused on the pharmacognostical characters like scientific classification, vernacular name and the plant potential in biological activity is described. The plant has been used in jaundice, diabetes, hemorrhoids, dysentery, headache, ringworm infection, and leprosy. More than 50 chemical compounds have been isolated from a plant which mainly comprises flavonoids, anthraquinones, proteins, fatty acids, saponin triterpene, volatile components, and other phytoconstituents. Crude extract of plant and its isolated compounds possess broad pharmacological activities such as antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antiulcer, anticancer, immunomodulatory, antihyperlipidemic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, CNS depressant, analgesic, and anti- inflammatory. The present review work focused on its distribution, botanical characters, ethanobotanical uses, folklore claims, nutritional value, phytochemical constituents, medicinal properties and biological properties of L. acutangula. Collection and evaluation of sponge gourd germplasm are needed for conservation and breeding of high quality varieties. The objective of the study was to identify varieties having high yield, good quality and aroma under local conditions. Ten promising sponge gourd accessions, including A2, A6, A7, A13, A16, A17, B29, B30, HN and QN were evaluated for growth, morphological traits, fruit quality and yield. The experiment was carried out in Hue University of Agricultural and Forestry from June to October in 2014. The results showed that all promising accessions grew well. Different morphological traits were observed among promising lines. Yield of accessions A7, A13 and A17 were higher than the others. Only fruits of accession B29 had aroma after cooking. The young fruits, which are a common sight at local markets, are shaped like a long baseball club measuring up to 60 cm in length. They have a dark green rind that is papery in texture and the most prominent feature of the fruit is the 10 ribs that encircle the exterior. Botanically known as Luffa acutangula, the young fruits of the angled luffa are mainly grown for food. Right: The familiar angled luffa. The angled luffa has several names. Due to the ribs, which are also referred to as ridges, the angled luffa is sometimes called the “ridged gourd”. People from the West gave the angled luffa the name “Chinese okra” due to its close resemblence to the okra. Okra is another name for the lady’s finger, which has similar-looking ribs on its fruit. Even the local Hokkien names for the angled luffa and lady’s finger are very similar, which arise from the ribs that these two fruits possess. “Kak kuay” refers to the angled luffa, which literally translates to “angled melon”. The lady’s finger is known as “Kak tau” and has the meaning of “angled bean”.
