| michiana house & home | july 2013 | 7 one room, many functions how your rooms can multi-task

by shelley swift house & home feature writer

Some people are great at multi-tasking. Cooking while cleaning. Daydreaming while driving. Accomplishing errands while running around town. But multi-tasking isn’t just for people. The rooms in your home can pull off multiple tasks, as well. Whether it’s a living room that doubles as a playroom, or a dining room that doubles as a study, there are likely plenty of spaces within each home that can serve more than one function.

The concept has become so popular that homeowners are plan- ning rooms for multiple uses even before their home is built. “They’re calling them flex rooms,” said Wendell Miller, owner of Renewal Homes in Warsaw. “Flex rooms are rooms that can be used for several different things, whether it’s a sitting room or bedroom or study. We’re seeing the concept more and more,” said Miller. He sometimes sees blueprints for homes with rooms labeled “flex,” which keep the intended purpose of the room wide open. “Some people have a hard time visualizing what a particular room will be used for. By calling it a flex room, rather than defining it as a study or something like that, they’re indicating that there will be more than one option there,” said Miller.

SCOPE OUT EXTRA SPACE Flex rooms are a great way to optimize space in any home. It’s especial- ly handy in homes with less than ample square footage. If you find you need more space than your current layout provides, start brainstorming ways to make one or more rooms serve several functions. A dining room can easily serve as an office by day and dining area by night. A spare bedroom can serve as both a play space and exercise room. The op- tions are endless. Bigger spaces like basements and garages tend to have lots of hidden potential. A basement can serve a variety of needs, like an office space, play area or entertainment zone. A garage can also be a great place to entertain, with a little initiative. Pull the cars out and envision an open space that’s ideal for hosting friends. Give the walls a fresh coat of paint and add some vintage metal signs or other decorations. Hang some folding chairs from hooks and bring in a spare fridge and TV, and you’re ready to host a casual get-together or an impromptu gathering of neighbors.

Long before the advent of the “outdoor living space,” patio furniture consisted of little more than flimsy, fold- furniture up aluminum chairs and chaise lounges that blew off to Oz at the first sign of a stiff breeze. An “outdoor kitchen” began (and ended) with a Hibachi or kettle grill and only the well-to-do had the capital to invest in a patio “set,” which included a table, cushioned dining chairs and co- al fresco ordinating umbrella. Times have certainly changed and as more and more homeowners look to their backyards as an extension of outdoor furniture should be their homes, they are looking for quality products that comfortable and reflect personal style look great, can stand up to Michiana weather patterns and are a reflection of their personal style and taste.

A SPLASH OF STYLE

Looks do matter, of course, and there is no shortage of accessories that can protect and accent your outdoor furniture so that it looks great all year long. Sunbrella cushions and pillows offer a splash of color while outdoor floor and table lamps will help light up the night. Awnings, um- brellas and pergolas are a great way to bring a little shade to the party, and don’t forget those protective covers when inclement weather is on the way. “There really is a lot to choose from in the way of outdoor furniture,” says Raber. “It just depends on what you want.”

GET COMFORTABLE Once homeowners understand how they plan to use their area and have a material in mind, the next step is to find a collection that suits their needs. According to Nola Pyle at Vinyl By Design in New Paris, this is easier said than done. There are an overwhelming amount of choices on the market and everyone likes something different. Lyle Helmuth at B&L Woodcrafts in Shipshewana says that even though the polyvinyl furniture has been around for 20 years, it's only been in the last four that the product has become a trend thanks to the availabil- ity of new colors and styles. "I do both the wood and the poly furniture, but really percentage wise, it is about 10 percent wood and 90 percent poly. That's how big it has be- come," he says. "I do two-toned pieces for people and carry both the Adirondack and country style furniture." “Some are looking for an Adirondack while others like the Euro style and still others go in for the Mission Collection,” Pyle says. “It’s hard to get a read on what the trends really are because some want something bright and fun near the pool while others look to something more traditional that complements their home all year long.” Raber says that outdoor furniture is no longer limited to the typical ta- bles, chairs and chaises of the past. Today’s outdoor furniture is as stylish as its indoor counterparts and can include gliders, rockers, bistro sets and high-top balcony tables where residents can enjoy a morning coffee. “Of course the Adirondack continues to be very popular, but even those have been redesigned and upgraded to enable people to get in and out of them with ease. | michiana house & home | july 2013 | 13 organized kitchens fun & functional

by shelley swift house & home feature writer

When cooking away in the kitchen, there’s nothing worse than being unable to find the right spoon, spice or gadget when you need it. That’s why an organ- ized kitchen space is so essential. If your kitchen cabinets and drawers are a mixed-up jumble of silverware, sauces and food staples, then it’s probably time to give them a full organizational overhaul. Luckily, there are profession- als out there who specialize in just this sort of thing.

“We have an in-home measuring and consultation service to make things convenient for customers who want to get organized,” said Gary Klaybor of Big C Lumber in South Bend. The lumber company carries a wide variety of cabinets, from economy lines to customized cabinetry. “We have on-staff designers at all of our kitchen shops who do nothing but kitchen design. We can fully customize kitchens, from the cabinetry to the appliances,” said Klaybor, general manager of the company’s kitchen cabinet division. “When working with the homeowners we sit down and get some information from them, including their lifestyle what type of functionality they want in their kitchen. We ask a range of questions, like whether they want a bar area for entertaining or a play area for kids. Once we get all that information, we incorporate all that into photos courtesy of kitchens, etc., Elkhart, IN the overall design.” 14 | michiana house & home | july 2013 | USE EVERY INCH OF SPACE cutting boards,” she said. My mother had one very simple rule around the house: “Don’t make a mess!” All gifts had to be vetted for their mess potential and anything that could get into the carpet, stick to surfaces or require a bath was vetoed. I was not allowed Play-Doh, clay, paint, Magic Sand or Silly Putty, and all bubble gum was rationed from a special cabinet. I had an Easy Bake Oven, a Snoopy Sno-Cone machine and a foot-powered blender that made Kool-Aid, but it was never a good day to use any of them. People ask me why I don’t cook and the reason is very simple. My mother didn’t believe in cleaning up after me! I was not allowed to do anything more than open a can of corn, lick the bowl after she mixed a cake batter or get some juice from the fridge (depending on how full the pitcher was). art Unfortunately, I was a kid who liked to make things and one day lkh in E while watching some science show on Nickelodeon, they showed an de easy recipe for a toothpaste alternative using ingredients found around Ma the kitchen. Excited, I immediately went into the kitchen to gather up the baking soda, baking powder and salt, which was located high above the stove and required a stool, two phone books and a coffee can to reach. | michiana house & home | july 2013 | 21 celebrate green, a flourishing color

Each month Michiana House & Home emphasizes “green” as it relates to environmental concerns. While it’s great to help homeowners become better stewards of the Earth, this month we want to promote green just for the beautiful color it is and the amazing ways it can be used inside your home.

Green is a favorite color of the creator of our planet as evidenced by the abundance of green in nature. Green covers fields and hillsides in generous doses, and not only grass green. Think of the variety of trees that are dressed in green foliage in the Midwest right now, in the middle of summer. Then envision palm trees swaying in the tropical breeze, and shaded forest floors covered in moss and ferns to get an idea of the spectrum of greens available to inspire your décor. Yes, green is a color found in nature, and because of that fact it goes well with just about any other color found in nature, if you stay with colors of the same value – dark with dark, light with light… i.e. try kelly green with navy blue, spring green with light tan, cedar green and lavender, lime green and bright pink. Green offers many options for creating a desired atmosphere in any room of the house. Cucumber green is cool and soothing; emerald green is radiant and energizing; mint is light and refreshing. Chartreuse is enjoying a comeback as decorators look to mid-century modern for contemporary inspiration. You may wish to pair this look-at-me color with gray or gold. There are endless options for using green in your decorating, including botan- ical prints on curtains, pillows or duvets. Use your imagination and have fun! ■ shutterstock.com
