One important S S S S group are those concerns regarding the handling of data. On the one hand, users and companies have requirements how S S S S their data should be treated. On the other hand, lawmakers impose requirements and obligations for specific types of data. These requirements have to be addressed in order to enable the affected users and companies to utilize cloud computing. Figure 1. Intercloud Scenario However, we observe that current cloud offers, especially in an intercloud setting, fail to meet these requirements. Users have no way to specify their requirements for data handling data, especially to the cloud. These requirements typically in the cloud and providers in the cloud stack – even if they restrict, e.g., how long and where a specific piece of data were willing to meet these requirements – can thus not treat might be stored. However, in current cloud offers it is the data adequately. In this paper, we identify and discuss the impossible to meet these requirements adequately [9], as challenges for enabling data handling requirements awareness users cannot specify their requirements and cloud providers in the (inter-)cloud.

    AppScale: Open-Source Platform-As-A-Service Chandra Krintz Chris Bunch Navraj Chohan Computer Science Department University of California Santa Barbara, CA USA UCSB Technical Report #2011-01 January 2011 ABSTRACT In this paper we overview AppScale, an open source cloud platform. AppScale is a distributed and scalable cloud runtime system that executes cloud applications in public, private, and hybrid cloud settings. AppScale implements a set of APIs in support of common and popular cloud services and functionality. This set includes those defined by the Google App Engine public cloud as well as those for large-scale data analytics and high-performance computing. Our goal with AppScale is to enable research and experimentation into cloud computing and to facilitate a ``write once, run anywhere'' programming model for the cloud, i.e., to expedite portable application development and deployment across disparate cloud fabrics. In this work, we describe the current AppScale APIs and the ways in which users can deploy AppScale clouds and applications in public and private settings. In addition, we describe the internals of the system to give insight into how developers can investigate and extend AppScale as part of research and development on next-generation cloud software and services. INTRODUCTION AppScale is a scalable, distributed, and fault-tolerant cloud runtime system that we have developed at the University of California, Santa Barbara as part of our research into the next generation of programming systems (Chohan, et al., 2009; Bunch, et al., 2010; Bunch (2) et.al, 2010). Recently, this form of service provision has become hugely popular, with many businesses migrating their IT applications and data to the Cloud to take advantage of the flexible resource provision that can bring benefits to businesses by responding quickly to new demands from customers. Cloud Federations envisage a distributed, heterogeneous environment consisting of various cloud infrastructures by aggregating different IaaS provider capabilities coming from both the commercial and academic area. Recent solutions hide the diversity of multiple clouds and form a unified federation on top of them. Many approaches follow recent trends in cloud application development, and offer federation capabilities at the platform level, thus creating Platform-as-a-Service solutions (eg. Heroku, CloudFoundry, Apcera Continuum). In his chapter we plan to investigate capabilities of these tools: what levels of developer experience they offer, how they follow recent trends in cloud application development, what types of APIs, developer tools they support and what web GUIs they provide. Developer experience is measured by creating and executing sample applications with these PaaS tools.     TECHNICAL BRIEF Use Cases and Requirements Introduction AppScale implements AWS-compatible clouds over dedicated infrastructure, either on premises or at a service provider. AppScale enables creation of cost- effective and flexible AWS hybrid cloud environments with a seamless experience for developers across public and private resources. No special- purpose hardware or operating system configurations are required and the entire stack utilizes open-source software. This document gives a technical overview of AppScale components and how they fit together. Use Cases Before diving into how the system is architected, consider how AppScale can be used. What are the user's expectations, in terms of interfaces and the operational setting? Hybrid cloud environments involve public clouds used in concert with privately operated clouds. This joint use of private and public resources may be temporary, as in the case of workloads transitioning into the public cloud (on-ramp) or from the public cloud (off-ramp), or the joint use may be permanent, as in the case of “cloud bursting” or development and production split between private and public environments. Motivations behind joint use, which is admittedly a more complex scenario than strictly public or strictly private deployment, can vary: • Latency requirements may necessitate running code closer to external devices (such as factory or floor equipment) than the nearest public cloud; • Data gravity may compel running computation near data sets that are impractical to move into a public cloud; • Compliance requirements may demand data storage or code execution in a location served by any public cloud or inaccessible at all from public networks ("air-gapped"); • Business requirements may blacklist certain cloud providers; • Public cloud pricing may make certain workloads, such as those with predictable profiles and long-running deployments, less expensive to run in a private cloud.
