JIN HO PARK October 2014 Pretoria II © University of Pretoria ABSTRACT The history of African Independent Churches (AICs) in Southern Africa goes back for more than a hundred years. They have proliferated geographically and demographically in Africa more than the mainline churches could ever have imagined. They have grown to be as widespread and as influential as the African mainline churches. The reason for this growth is that the AICs are the churches of African indigenous people. They are launched by Africans from a background of an African traditional and cultural frame of reference. The most significant reason is that the founders of these churches are not Westerners, but Africans. Western missionaries find it difficult to understand the AICs from their perspective. Thus the Western churches describe the AICs as sectarian, separatist, syncretist, nativitist, and so on. Nevertheless, some scholars are attempting to view the AICs in positive ways. The fact that these two different churches have never acknowledged each other as true churches is a big challenge for Christian missions in Namibia. Each group has been viewing and judging the other party through suspicious eyes from their own perspective, each dri ving the other to block the channel of reconciliation before the presence of God. With the aim of solving this problem, this thesis attempts to answer the following questions about the AICs in Namibia: • What are the reasons that the AICs in Namibia have been seceded from mission churches? • What are the activities in civil society in which the AICs in Namibia are currently involved? • Do the AICs engage in any activities which go against the Word of God? • What causes other churches to be suspicious of the AICs? • What level of enculturation is inherent to the AICs in Namibia? In other words, what is the relationship between the liturgies of the AIC and African traditional religion and African culture? • What makes the AICs in Namibia regard themselves as a church? III © University of Pretoria • Would it be possible for the AICs and the mainline churches in Namibia to cooperate in Christian missionary work? • What is a possible Korean missionary perspective on this particular situation? This will be dealt throughout this thesis from a Korean missionary missional perspective.     Horizontal inequalities in Africa: measurement issues SK Tetteh-Baah, K Harttgen, I Günther Chair of Development Economics ETH Zurich, Switzerland Abstract This study estimates different indicators of horizontal or between-group inequality to track the progress made against inequality of opportunity across 38 African countries between 1990 and 2016. Such progress largely depends on the assumptions held in measuring horizontal inequality [HI]. Previous studies have shown with traditional methods of measurement that HI has been generally falling in Africa. The traditional use of a relative measure of inequality assumes that people are sensitive to relative, not absolute, differences when comparing distributions. The traditional use of plutocratic method of weighting also assumes that majority groups count more than, not equal to, minority groups. Using data from the Demographic and Health Survey program, the study demonstrates that the traditional approach to the measurement of HI embellishes the progress made against unequal opportunities over time, compared to what more egalitarian approaches would suggest. Much of the reduction in horizontal inequalities in educational attainment and wealth in Africa, as shown in previous studies, is being driven by overall growth in living standards, and not necessarily the narrowing of absolute gaps in sub- national regional, ethnic, gender, or religious outcomes over time. However, the study finds falling horizontal inequalities in child non-stunting and child survival, which is robust to the measure of inequality applied, indicating greater equality of opportunity for the new generation of African people.     JULACE: Journal of University of Namibia Language Centre Volume 3, No. 1, 2018 (ISSN 2026-8297) Persistence of African languages and religions in Latin America since slavery Ndapewa Fenny Nakanyete University of Namibia Abstract This paper examines the presence of African languages and spiritual practices of Candomblé, Santería and Vodou religions in Brazil, Cuba and Haiti respectively. The three religions are known to have been originated by African slaves that were mostly captured in- and transferred from West and Central Africa to Latin America. Currently, the three religions are not only followed by African descendants, but also by people of various ethnic backgrounds worldwide. Thus, people flock to the three countries regularly to be initiated into this African-based religions and cultures. On the other hand, similar spiritual practices on the African continent seem to be generally stigmatized if not demonized. Findings presented in this paper are as a result of direct observations and open interviews over a four months of fieldwork, as well as desktop reviews of existing literature. The findings demonstrate etymologies of terms and expressions that are of various African languages origin and are used in the three religions. The paper calls for integral comparative studies of parts in Africa with parts of Latin America to auxiliary identify linguistic and spirituality similarities, and significance roles of African slaves in maintaining African traditions. The Problems of the Text On 14 November 1989, Pluto Press published Church and Liberation in Namibia (CALIN), edited by Peter Katjavivi, Per Frostin and Kaire Mbuende. The book contains a number of documents on the relation between the churches and political conditions in Namibia, from 1958 to 1988, with individual essays by each of the editors and three others. David Theo Goldberg, assistant professor at the School of Justice Studies at Arizona State University, has described the book as 'crucial for anyone wanting to com­ prehend the role of the church in the promotion and realization of Namibian independence'. (Southern African Review of Books, Jan/Febl991) Goldberg's review is characteristic of the ignorance combined with tunnel vision of the international liberal/left establishment relating to southern Africa. The book in fact makes it impossible to comprehend the role of the churches in one of the most important episodes in the recent history of southern Africa: the cycle of wholesale arrests, torture, imprisonment and murder of Swapo members on the orders of their own leaders, dating from at least 1976 until the release of survivors in May 1989.

    AFRICA INSTITUTE OF SOUTH AFRICA BriefinG NO 116 MARCH 2015 ‘I believe in one God’ or the issue of teaching religion in Namibia Olga Bialostocka1 In the modern pluralistic world, the question of whether religious education should be provided at schools, and what kind of moral tuition it should be, keeps returning. The dilemma can be partly linked to the ambiguity of purposes that such education may serve. Depending on the way religious knowledge systems are communicated, they can be used to endorse a specific homogenous national identity or they can assist in building global citizenship. To prevent religion from becoming a divisive factor, an inter-faith approach to moral education needs to be adopted. Based on inclusivity and impartiality, rather than promotion of a specific religious stance, it should help students embrace diversity, while ascribing pride to their multiple cultures and beliefs. The issue seems particularly important in multicultural and multi-religious contexts, where integration of diverse people, as opposed to their assimilation or exclusion, is needed for social cohesion and nation-building. This policy brief deals with religious and moral education in one such country – Namibia, chosen for its perceived lack of intercultural conflicts despite the cultural diversity of its society. The brief identifies the gaps between policy and practice with relation to inter-faith education and recommends possible actions to address the problems.     Electoral Commission of Namibia For free, fair and credible elections SUPPLEMENTARY REGISTRATION OF VOTERS 08 – 20 SEPTEMBER 2014 Toll free no: 081 9362 2 Message of ECN Director Register and Let Your Voice be Heard am greatly honored to inform the Namibian Electorate that the Electoral Commission of I Namibia will be conducting Supplementary Registration of Voters in all constituencies of the country from 8 – 20 September 2014. The Registration of Voters will take place at various registration points nationwide and starts from 08H00 in the morning to 19H00 in the evening, Monday to Saturday. No registration shall be done on any Sunday. The Supplementary registration of voters will be conducted for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections. This is to ensure that all eligible persons are registered and are in possession of voters’ cards in order to partake in the upcoming Presidential and National Assembly elections. An efficient voter registration system requires the population to be active in reporting changes of residency and other relevant aspects of their civil status. The Supplementary registration will thus give an opportunity to all citizens that were not able to register during the General Registration of Voters , as well as eligible voters that just turned 18 years to register to vote. The Supplementary registration will also record changes in residency and correct any errors on the electorates’ current registration cards. The Supplementary Registration of Voters is intended to ensure that all eligible citizens can exercise their right to vote during upcoming elections. Registration of voters outside Namibia Amendments made to the Electoral Act in 2009 permits the Electoral Commission of Professor Paul John Isaak Namibia to establish temporary registration points outside Namibia.
