  • “Carrie Fisher Sent Me”
Unbound: A Journal of Digital Scholarship Realizing Resistance: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Star Wars, Episodes VII, VIII & IX Issue 1, No. 1, Fall 2019 “CARRIE FISHER SENT ME” Princess Leia as an avatar of resistance in the Women’s March Christina M. Knopf Keywords: Star Wars, Resistance, Women’s March A January 2017 article from the Independent led with the words, “Across the world, Carrie Fisher's rebel princess turned general become [sic] a source of hope and inspiration for women everywhere” (Loughrey 2017, para. 1). The article was loaded with images from Twitter of protest signs bearing Carrie Fisher’s visage with her iconic hair rolls superimposed with such slogans as “Woman’s Place is in the Resistance,” “We are the Resistance,” and “Rebel Scum.” Signs found in Twitter posts, news articles, and published archives revealed numerous Star Wars-inspired messages of feminist rebellion and resistance. Some featured Princess Leia as Rosie the Riveter, the emblem of the Resistance fighters tattooed on her arm or taking the place of Rosie’s employment badge on her collar. Signs recreated the Star Wars’ ITC Serif Gothic Heavy font to proclaim that “The Women Strike Back,” “The Fempire Strikes Back,” “The Estrogen Empire Strikes Back,” and “The Female Force Awakens,” others presented the Resistance insignia and/or Princess Leia’s face stating “Resistance is Built on Hope.” Some protestors dressed in a full Princess Leia costumes from A New Hope, promising to defeat the Dark Side. Some marchers paraphrased Leia’s iconic plea to Obi Wan, and declared, “We are Our Only Hope.” A sign paraphrasing Yoda argued that “Fear leads to anger.

UNMASKING HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY: MASCULINE REPRESENTATIONS IN STAR WARS by NICOLE MARTINEZ B.A., University of Colorado Colorado Springs 2017 A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communication 2019 © 2019 NICOLE MARTINEZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii This thesis for the Master of Arts degree by Nicole Martinez has been approved for the Department of Communication by Christopher Bell, Chair K. Maja Krakowiak Katie Sullivan December 16, 2019 iii Martinez, Nicole (M.A. Communication) Unmasking Hegemonic Masculinity: Masculine Representations in Star Wars Thesis directed by Associate Professor Christopher Bell. ABSTRACT Star Wars has influenced generations of American viewers for decades but has gone largely unanalyzed when it comes to a critique of the discourses about masculinity presented in the films. This is problematic as media serves as an agent of socialization, and the representations of masculinity in the Star Wars franchise may influence viewers’ idealization of masculinity leading to real world consequences. The research questions being analyzed in this study are: Is hegemonic masculinity performed by central characters in Star Wars? If so, how is it reinforced, how is it challenged, and how do these change over time? This study uses a critical discourse analysis to analyze the character development of twenty central characters of the Star Wars franchise, how these characters are both challenged and aspire to fall into ideals of hegemonic masculinity, and how these ideals may shift over time. Keywords: Star Wars, Critical Discourse Analysis, Hegemonic Masculinity, Toxic Masculinity iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank all of the people in my life who made it possible for me to submit this thesis and pursue my Masters education.

  • Disney+ LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special Project Fact Sheet As of 10.26
“The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special” reunites Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, Rose and the droids for a joyous feast on Life Day, a holiday first introduced in the 1978 “Star Wars Holiday Special.” The new special from LEGO is the first to debut on Disney+ and continues the rich legacy of collaboration between Lucasfilm and LEGO— playful adventures told in the endearingly irreverent way that only LEGO Star Wars cobranded content can. Directly following the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” Rey leaves her friends to prepare for Life Day as she sets off on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious Jedi Temple, she is hurled into a cross-timeline adventure through beloved moments in Star Wars cinematic history, coming into contact with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan and other iconic heroes and villains from all nine Skywalker saga films. But will she make it back in time for the Life Day feast and learn the true meaning of holiday spirit? The “LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special” premieres Tuesday, November 17, streaming only on Disney+. • Star Wars Twitter Analysis
Star Wars Twitter analysis Bethany Lacina Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Rochester [email protected] This document accompanies an article I wrote for the Washington Post Mon- key Cage Blog in September 2018. I analyzed data from Star Wars fan Twitter and argued that (1) offensive language and hate speech have a modest but clear pres- ence, (2) abusive posts are not due to automated accounts (bots), and (3) posters use more profanity and slurs to talk about women and minorities and to talk to female fans. 1 Where the tweets come from 2 Measuring offensive language and hate speech 3 Is the backlash due to bots? 4 Monkey Cage results 5 Is Rose Tico just unpopular? 6 Extended results on offensive language 7 Why measuring harassment is difficult 1 Where the tweets come from The tweets I analyzed are from Twitter’s Historical Search Premium API.1 The API searches for tweets and presents them in reverse chronological order. By 1API stands for “application program interface.” An API is a URL that transmits unformatted data instead of transmitting a website with a graphical interface. 1 B. Lacina Star Wars Twitter contrast, a search on Twitter’s website provides results according to relevance. I conducted four searches for tweets in reverse chronological order from be- fore June 2, 2018 at 1700 GMT, about when Kelly Marie Tran quit Instagram. The four batches of tweets were: (1) results of a keyword search for Star Wars (SW) or The Last Jedi (TLJ); (2) results of a keyword search for Kelly Marie Tran or Rose Tico (the name of Tran’s TLJ character); (3) mentions and replies sent to male fan podcasters; (4) mentions and replies sent to female fan podcasters.
