Standing Committee members for 2019 included the Rev. Sean Ekberg, Mr. Field Griffith, the Rev. Mary Ann Hill, the Rev. Everett C. Lees, Ms. Marian Moon, and Mr. Robert Yadon.

In addition to regularly scheduled combined Diocesan Council and Standing Committee meetings, the Standing Committee held several virtual meetings. The main activities for the year included voting on consents for the elections of bishops, and interviewing and voting on individuals at various stages of the ordination process. With the completion of the Bishop Search and Election and with the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the wider church, the committee has been less active this year. On behalf of the Committee, I wish to express our gratitude for the ministries of Bishop Konieczny and Bishop Reed. It is our privilege and joy to serve them and people of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma.

Faithfully, (the Rev.) Mary Ann Hill President

EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF OKLAHOMA Report of the Constitution and Canons Committee to the 83rd Convention of the Diocese

The Constitution and Canons Committee consults with the Bishop, Standing Committee and Diocesan Council regarding the Constitution and Canons of the Church and Diocese. It also maintains the Diocesan Canons through periodic amendments to ensure their currency, effectiveness and compliance with the General Canons and applicable state law and reviews amendments proposed by others to confirm their proper form.

For this Diocesan Convention, being held virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee is proposing amendments to our Canons that implement the Diocese’s statutory authority to hold meetings virtually and communicate electronically. Other proposed changes recognize the service of all clergy from churches in full communion with the Church, conform the Canons to the Diocese’s normal practices, correct errors and conform numbering.

The Committee has also prepared and maintains a model form of bylaws for use by congregations and institutions and advises congregations and institutions that are amending their bylaws. Since the last Convention, it reviewed and revised proposed bylaws for seven congregations and institutions.

The Committee encourages input about the Diocesan Canons and its work.

OKLAHOMA COUNCIL ON INDIAN MINISTRY 2020 CONVENTION REPORT

The Oklahoma Council on Indian Ministry has had an eventful year. The 2020 Annual Wintertalk meeting was held in Seattle in late January just as the first Covid-19 infections began to surface in Washington State. Fortunately, none of the 85 attendees tested positive. Those attending the conference were Pat Gonzales, Deacon at Whirlwind Mission of the Holy Trinity, Caressa James, Advisory Committee member, Blue Clark, and Buzz McDonald. In later discussions, the 2021 Wintertalk meeting will be a virtual Zoom meeting format. Buzz McDonald was asked to fill the Advisory Committee Representative position as Caressa James’ term expired on January 1, 2020. The Advisory Committee is made up of 12 Indigenous members to advise the National Indigenous Minister, The Rev. Brad Hauff. As the pandemic progressed, The Diocese of Western Michigan chose to sponsor a You-Tube event, “INDIGI-AID” to present indigenous dancers and singers, in an effort to raise funds for distribution to Indigenous Nations suffering from Covid-19. The event raised $38,000.00 and the Advisory Committee was asked to oversee the distribution. To date both the Navajo Nation and the Yakima Nations have been recipients of Indigi-Aid funds with approximately $10,000.00 held in reserve yet to be determined. Initial conversation with Province VII Chairperson Aeyesha Mutope-Johnson is just beginning regarding a possible conference to be held in Oklahoma to combat systemic racism and abuse of Indigenous people. Timing of the conference would be based on the successful implementation of a vaccine and reduction of Covid-19 infections. Currently Province VII is applying for a Beloved Community grant to also provide supplies to Oklahoma Indigenous communities. With regret, the 2020 Oakerhater Honor Dance has been cancelled due to the risk of spreading the virus among elder native people who are particularly at risk.

Faithfully Submitted,

Buzz McDonald, Chair Person

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN

Diocese of Oklahoma 2020

Report to Convention

OUR MISSION: We are Sisters in Christ. We are every Episcopal Woman, lay or ordained. We are committed to prayer, listening, leadership, study, service, giving, and fellowship.

The Episcopal Church Women’s organization is made up of all women in the church. While individual churches may not have a formal organized group called ECW, this does not preclude the women in that church from being a part of this statewide organization. The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Oklahoma offer programs throughout the year for the women of this diocese and their guests. We encourage all women to fully participate in Diocesan events which will support them in their mission and ministry.

Retreats held in the early Spring and Fall at St. Crispin's are well attended by Episcopal Women from around the diocese. The retreats have also served as an excellent opportunity for outreach as attendees often recruit women from outside the Episcopal Church to join them for spiritual renewal and study offered at these events. The 2020 fall retreat was held October 4-6 at St. Crispin’s with masks, social distancing, and outside when possible. We honored the memory of our beloved Reverend Debora Jennings (who had helped us plan a safe way to gather this year before we lost her without warning), celebrated the ministry of special guest and homilist Debra Koneiczny, and were thrilled to be able to welcome Megan Reed into our community and begin to know her. The 2021 dates for the Women’s retreats are February 26-28, 2020 and October 1-3.

In addition to our retreats, programs are often presented in each of the regions of the diocese. Each spring we normally hold our Annual Conference & Bishop's Day bringing women together from around Oklahoma for prayer, education and fellowship. The Annual Conference & Bishop’s Day was planned and hosted by the ECW Diocesan Board to be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 1-2, 2020. Bebe Dotter, as chair, had organized a very special conference; women of St. Paul’s, Resurrection, and All Souls had volunteered to assist with hospitality. However, plans had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. The next Annual Conference & Bishop’s Day, April 30 – May 1, 2021, will be held at St. Crispin’s. We are hoping that this unique and central location will draw women from around the diocese to come together with Bishop Poulson.

Province VII had organized an ECW conference to be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, September 11-12, 2020, welcoming women to Oklahoma City from twelve dioceses across the seven states of Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Instead, several of us from this diocese attended a very inspirational Zoom conference on September 12, 2020. Our diocese may also be represented by the ECW President and three delegates to ECW Province VII. Debbie

13

Butcher has been slated to be the new Secretary of ECW Province VII for 2021-2023.

Normally, in the year prior to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, delegates are elected to represent our state at the Triennial of the Episcopal Church Women which meets concurrently with General Convention. In 2018, four Episcopal church women represented our diocese at the Triennial Meeting held July 5-11 in Austin, Texas. The meeting was filled with information on women’s ministries, great key note speakers and worship, hands on outreach, fellowship and networking. As the 80th General Convention will be postponed to 2022, so will Triennial. All national officers will remain in office until the close of the next Triennial Meeting at which they are elected. We are continuing to make plans to celebrate the 150 anniversary of the ECW at the next Triennial whenever that takes place.

Episcopal Church Women of Oklahoma support many ministries within the state and across the nation. Each year we publish the “Blue Book”, our directory which is distributed to all clergy, churches and diocesan leaders, organized ECWs, key women, and churches. In addition, women of the church support the greater community including New Hope, Whirlwind Mission, United Thank Offering, Church Periodical Club, Cursillo, The Bishop’s Cup, Summer Camp and others. Women from many of our congregations help with the annual Oakerhater Celebration and Honor Dance as volunteers who serve an outstanding traditional meal.

Our mission in the upcoming years is to explore ways in which we can be more creative and responsive to the needs of the women in our diocese and to bring the opportunities for fellowship and growth that our events and resources provide to all women and all parishes in the diocese. We encourage individual churches with organized groups of women, churches just beginning to organize, or individual women without a parish organization, to contact us so that we can explore how we can provide support to the ministries of all women in the diocese.

Respectfully submitted, Sheryl S. Sullivan, ECW President

Diocesan Archive 2020 Journal Report

The Diocese’s Archive is a repository of the Episcopal church history within Oklahoma. It is the living record of accomplishments and contributions in spreading the word of the Gospel across many decades. While many tasks were achieved this year, one of the most important goals focused upon the preservation of papers, photographs, and artifacts. Through the service of an experienced media specialist, most of the archive’s analog recordings have been digitized. Recordings of former Bishops’ addresses and Diocesan conventions were part of the digitization. Additionally, over thirty thousand archival papers have been digitized to conserve their usability and access. Many historical digitized images have been utilized on the new Diocesan archival web page. Earlier this year the new Archive’s web page was created to provide more access and visibility of its holdings. The web page is also an avenue to learn more about our history and highlight the accomplishments of the Diocese. Currently, the web page contains images of Churches, former Bishops, St. Crispin’s Conference Center, Senior Living Communities, Hospitals and Historical Publications. This coming year will include the addition of former Clergy, Deaconess/ and Native American Ministry. This is an evolving project meant to showcase Episcopalians’ contributions to our state’s heritage and the historical holdings within the archive. Two new in-house Diocesan office exhibits were added during this summer. The first exhibit features Reverend Franklin Campbell Smith’s life in Oklahoma and Indian Territories. The Diocesan received Reverend Smith’s collection of Native American artifacts obtained by him during the late 1890s and print photographs of the Whirlwind Mission. The second exhibit featured Bishop Casady’s dream of building a new Cathedral in Oklahoma City. This was a project he envisioned before we became a Diocese; unfortunately, his dream did not materialize due to financial circumstances. Yet, he did keep his correspondence, plans and drawings for future generations which are now on display. Both exhibits will be featured in the coming months on our archive web page for viewing. Earlier this year, the archive was especially fortunate to receive a University intern to catalog our Bishop and church artifact collection. This collection has never been formally accessioned or received much attention, so it was of great assistance. It is a future archive goal to acquire the best possible preservation storage for these artifacts. In 2021, the goal is to continue processing collections and determine new methods for accessing archival materials. The role of the Archive is to offer experiences and lessons from our forebears’ history so we may gain strength and wisdom in spreading the Gospel in today’s world.

Commission on Ministry

2020 Annual Report

Over the past year members of the Commission continued to work with Bishop Konieczny, Bishop Poulson, Canon Durning and Canon Cooter to coordinate our efforts to prepare people for ordained ministry. Various initiatives include:

▪ The Iona School of Formation, based at St. Crispin’s. The Iona School has its roots in the Iona School for Ministry in the Diocese of Texas. At the Iona School of Formation, students gather for monthly weekends during the academic year for three years, preparing for ordination either to the diaconate or as bi- vocational . Dr. Steve Orwig is the Academic Dean of the Iona School of Formation.

▪ The Discernment Program, a nine-month program for aspirants (people who are considering the possibility of ordained ministry). Aspirants meet monthly to examine different aspects of the priesthood and the diaconate, in order to explore their call to ministry. Members of the Commission on Ministry often participate in these monthly sessions. The Rev. Joseph Alsay oversees the program.

▪ The BACM (Bishop’s Advisory Council on Ministry) Weekend, an event in April of each year in which the Commission and the Bishop meet with aspirants who have successfully completed the Discernment Program. The goal of the BACM Weekend is to gain clarity about the aspirants’ perceived call to ordained ministry. ▪ Along with multiple recommendation for Postulancy, four Postulants were recommended for Candidacy and two Candidates were recommended for Priesting. Both lay and clergy serve on the Commission. Current members: The Rev. Tim Baer, The Rev Chris Yoder, The Rev. Did Crider, The Rev. Elizabeth Davis, Field Griffen, The Rev. Therese Starr, The Rev. Canon Tony Moon, Ph.D., Dr. Steve Orwig, The Rev Clark Shackelford, The Rev. Dr. Lee Domenick, The Rev. Kay Boman Harvey.

Faithfully submitted,

The Rev. Dr. John Toles Chair, Commission on Ministry

From Sabrina Evans, Director of Formation: Christian Formation in the Diocese has seen lots of changes this year – all for the good. It is wonderful to have Kate Carney Huston on board to assume responsibility of the Youth and Young Adults of the Diocese. As she takes on this age group, it allows me more time to work with Children, Adults, Seniors, and Clergy. We continue to use Basecamp as our primary source of providing Christian Formation resources. If you are responsible for formation in your church and are not receiving this, you are encouraged to let us know. It is a free service. We evaluate each program and adapt programs in hopes of providing the best options offered. There was a Liturgy Leadership Training event that provided resources and hand’s on opportunities for those who help make Sunday worship possible. We had a “full house” at this year’s Education for Ministry (EfM) training; and The Bishop’s Lecture Series with The Rev. Becca Stevens was just completed and was a success. We continue to work on Spiritual Gifts on-line test and helping churches focus in on their ministries. Our Diocese offers several options for resources through Diocesan-wide coverage. If you need any resources, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sabrina Evans

From Kate Carney Huston, Director of Youth and Young Adults: It has been a life-giving year as I assumed the position of Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at the Diocese. I began the year by evaluating and planning for our 2019-2020 program year with the budget and program development. We are continuing to build upon our current set of programs for youth including New Beginnings (held in January for Jr. High youth), Happening (held in December for Sr. High youth), and the Diocesan Convention Youth Retreat with some new and exciting programs. First, we hosted 28 youth and 9 adults from twelve churches across the Diocese on our first Diocesan Youth Pilgrimage. This year we focused on Racial Reconciliation and visited Memphis, Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma, and Little Rock. Youth participated in various activities and learned about those in our church and in our country who fought for equal justice and civil rights. Particularly powerful was our visit in Montgomery to the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Youth and adults also completed training in racial reconciliation and visited Tulsa to learn about the Greenwood Massacre (Tulsa Race Riot) in 1921. Next summer (2020) we will traveling to Washington, D.C. to extend our experience of the intersection of faith and civil discourse. In 2020 we will also be offering a new program for high school that each year will tackle a different issue of faith and culture. This program is a joint effort of youth ministers throughout the Diocese as we bring youth together to gain a better sense of self and identity as we explore the complicated topic of human sexuality in the context of our Episcopal faith. Topics included are language, values, peer relationships, boundaries, behaviors, emotions, and viewing ourselves as made in the image of God. Youth ministers met in August to begin planning this program and we are excited to offer it in April of 2020.

17

In addition to youth and young adult programming, I also oversee the development and role of Christian community at our camp during the summer. St. Crispin’s summer camp remains a loving and Christ-centered community of children and youth who are nurtured by counselors from Oklahoma and beyond. For a complete report on Christian Community at Camp, please email Kate Carney Huston. We are now hosting monthly online meetings for youth ministers for the purpose of touching base, sharing resources, developing goals, and supporting one another in ministry. I have also enjoyed the consulting work with the six separate congregations I have worked with this year in various capacities and look forward to doing more of that work in the future. One area of ministry I would like to expand in 2020 is my work with congregations related to developing young adult programming and opportunities at the Diocesan level. Respectfully Submitted, Kate Carney Huston

OSU Canterbury Center Report

Like every organization and church in our diocese, the campus ministry at Oklahoma State has experienced major disruptions in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. One day things are normal and your students are headed off to spring break and then everyone is scrambling to figure out what distance learning looks like. This new reality has definitely forced us to pivot our focus. Here are some highlights of some of these changes

• Starting this semester we have moved to a hybrid system of meeting once in person and once online. On Sunday evenings we gather online to check in with each other, share prayer requests and close with prayer. Our students enjoy praying Compline and New Zealand Night Prayer. • On Wednesday evenings we gather for Holy Eucharist. Fortunately, the Canterbury Center allows us space to spread out appropriately. • One of the biggest challenges we have faced as a community is the loss of our shared meals. We are grateful for members of St. Andrew’s and other friends who have been flexible with this new reality. A handful of parishioners have continued brining meals that we serve to-go in individual containers and others still have donated money to help offset the cost of making our own food to serve. These donated funds are put in the newly created Sandy and Jerry Sutherland Memorial Fund. Sandy and Jerry started feeding the students as soon as I started here and were wonderful supporters of our ministry. These funds help ensure that there is always food and snacks for the students when they stop by the Canterbury Center. • We have increased the number of opportunities for members of St. Andrew’s to provide goodie bags for our students, expanding from just offering finals week care packages. Several families have banded together to work on welcome bags and will be assembling halloween treats for our students as well. • The majority of pastoral visits have been conducted via Zoom or FaceTime while regular tabs are kept on students via GroupMe and text. While we miss personal meetings over coffee or lunch the hope is to ease back into more in person meetings in the Spring.

While this past year has definitely been less than ideal, I must share my gratitude for the patience and adaptability of our students, the continued support and encouragement from our friends at St. Andrew’s, and the prayerful support of the diocese. God’s blessings abound even in this difficult time. We cannot wait to welcome Bishop Poulson to our community in the Spring as well.

Thank you for the opportunity to share this spiritual journey with your young adults, and please let me know when you have students headed our way.

Respectfully submitted,

Advance Report to 2020 Diocesan Convention

The Commission on Prison Ministry

The Commission on Prison Ministry is grateful for the Diocese's continuing support of our lay and clergy prison ministers, as we continue finding ways for reaching out to those residing "behind the walls," despite the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. On March 13, 2020, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (“ODOC”) closed all Oklahoma Prisons to volunteers and visitors due to the Pandemic.

Prior to that, our prison ministers were busily driving to and from prisons, making meaningful human connections, not based on a retributive law enforcement model, but rather, reaching out in confidence that, by faith, we meet Christ in one another by living into Jesus’ words:

“I was in prison, and you visited me.” - Matthew 25:36

Now, as we find ourselves submerged in this strange reality of physical separation, we have discovered how much the inmates who used to attend our services now enjoy receiving our cards, notes and newsletters, because so many of them previously received very little or no mail at all.

We are also working to meet the challenge of creating video worship and Christian formation content that will suit inmates’ spiritual needs, as well as work compatibly with the currently limited capacities of the ODOC’s audio-visual equipment and video distribution systems. As the ODOC works toward improving their audio-video facilities, this new shift in our ministries is also a work in progress.

Meanwhile, a very few of our volunteers have been invited to enter the prisons once again to assist ODOC chaplains in performing their duties with the inmates. However, at this writing there have been surges of COVID cases in the prisons, and we do not know what the immediate future will bring.

As we move forward, hoping for the day when this physical distancing gap will close, it is fitting to memorialize the nature and extent of our prison ministries as of the date the prisons first closed. This we have done in the information below, which will be followed by a listing of the those who currently serve as Members of, or as Participating Partners in the work of, our Diocesan Commission on Prison Ministry.

Thank you again for your continuing support!

2020 Report to the Diocese from the Ardmore Village

Isaiah 61:3 NLT “To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for his own glory.

There has been a lot of “mourning” this year around our world and at Ardmore Village because of the loss caused by COVID-19. The loss of normalcy. The loss of relationship – senior adults being isolated from family and friends. Even the loss of life. Thankfully, to date, Ardmore Village has not suffered the loss of life due to COVID-19. We have only had two positive cases – one resident and one employee.

It has been a challenging time with our Assisted Living being shut down for months to families and friends to visit their loved ones. Across our campus we have had months without group activities. And everyone has had to wear a mask which makes communicating with the hard of hearing even more challenging!

But there has been “beauty” and strength like the “great oaks” written about in Isaiah. 2020 has slowed our work on future projects, but our residents and maintenance team continue to make Ardmore Village a beautiful place to live by working to make our buildings and grounds beautiful.

We have seen the strength of character as residents and employees have risen above the difficulties of 2020. Since March 17, 2020 our dietary staff have been delivering meals 2-3 times daily to our residents in their rooms at our Assisted Living without complaining. Some of our dietary staff have taken to writing jokes and inspirational messages on the Styrofoam cups delivered with a meal. A simple thing yet something beautiful that encourages a senior who may be struggling emotionally.

There has been fear and despair in 2020 but there has been and will be rejoicing such as when our residents at the Lodge got to visit with their families for the first time in months! Residents and family members were rejoicing! We look forward to the day when COVID is a distant memory, but we will rejoice today because the Lord has been and is good to us!

October 2020

Dear Diocesan Convention,

Holland Hall began our 99th year of continuous operation and our 62nd as an Episcopal school serving students in and around the Tulsa area, as well as students from around the world, this August. With strategic and marketing plans in place and the successful conclusion of our $50 million capital campaign, we are delighted to continue to share the Episcopal tradition of an open, inclusive community that values the dignity and worth of every human being in our midst with our students, their families, and the broader Tulsa community.

Much is shared in the education and parenting worlds about the importance of instilling the virtues of tenacity and resilience in our children. Holland Hall could not agree more. We opened campus to in-person learning for grades Early PreK - 5th on August 25. One week later grades 6th - 12th joined them. Because of our physical campus and the incredible determination of our maintenance team, we were able to establish social distancing in the vast majority of classroom spaces. With a mask policy in place and the alternative and creative use of non-traditional spaces on campus, Holland Hall has offered in-person learning, and continues to do so, for the time being. Indeed, we began the year with 1006 students, the largest opening day enrollment in over 15 years.

At the same time, any students with personal health risks are able to learn concurrently from home. Our technology investments and training for faculty have also made it manageable for students to quarantine when, and if, necessary, while not losing pace with their peers on campus. At the root of a great Episcopal education rests the relational trust built while with others. We feel so fortunate to have our space, and our Episcopal tradition binding us together.

With warmest regards,

J.P. Culley Head of School

Annual Report to the eighty-second Diocesan Convention September 2020

Since our founding in 1947 by the Rt. Reverend Thomas Casady, Casady School, has enjoyed the many benefits and blessings of being an Episcopal Day School. We continue to value and appreciate the support of the Rt Reverend Poulson Reed and Rt. Reverend Dr. Edward J. Konieczny, and the Diocese of Oklahoma. In part, because of this strong bond between the Oklahoma Diocese and the School, we at Casady confidently live our mission into the lives of hundreds of students every year. Our mission calls for us to develop excellence, confidence, and integrity in students and prepare them with the skills and knowledge that serve as the foundation for success. We are grateful for the many who continue to lift our Institution in prayer and who continue to support us financially, our School's mission.

100% of the 78 members of the class of 2020 will be attending one of 41 different colleges and universities and taking a gap year before entering college. 62% of our students will be attending schools outside Oklahoma, with nearly 81% receiving more than $8.75 million in scholarships. 51% of the class scored a 30 or higher on the ACT, and the average was 29. Twenty students will attend honors colleges, with four National Merit Finalists and three National Merit Scholars and one National Merit Scholar. Finally, about 10% of the class plan to continue to play sports in six different intercollegiate sports. While the college placement is always an emphasis at Casady School, we continue to ensure our students graduate ready to live lives of balance, purpose, and joy. To that end, we have had superior ratings in Orchestra, Band, and Music and placed nationally at Debate tournaments. While our year was cut short due to COVID, our Science Olympiad team continued to dominate the state circuit. We want our students to take risks and participate in life outside the classroom, recognizing the importance of balance. As for our incoming group of Cyclones, we have enjoyed steady enrollment year over year under less than normal circumstances. As of this letter's writing, we remained at 951 enrolled students, and 94% of our students are receiving "in-person" learning, and about 6% have opted to remain virtual during this pandemic. We open up with 493 boys and 458 girls. We have 37% ethnic Diversity, and more than 24% of our student body represents socioeconomic diversity.

This past year, like many of our peer schools, we went to virtual learning right after Spring Break. Our faculty have been outstanding both for the last three months of the 2019/20 school year and the professional development growth and opening of the school year this year. We have gone to extraordinary lengths to provide as safe a learning environment as possible. We have invested more than $500k to ensure our students' and facultys' safety is a top priority. In closing, we would like to share the link to view the biographies of our newest team members. Please go to https://www.casady.org/about/new-faculty-in-2020-2021. We are grateful to have added a nurse this past year, and she has been a real help as we navigate this COVID environment. I want to thank all of you for supporting our great School with your prayers. I ask that you continue to pray for our faculty and students' safety as we press forward with "in-person" learning.

Faithfully,

Nathan L. Sheldon Head of School

2020 Annual Report to the Diocesan Convention

Oak Hall Episcopal School – The Way School Should Be!

Like everyone across the country, and around the globe, what started as a “normal” year, became anything but in March 2020.

At Oak Hall Episcopal School (OHES) we work hard to build relationships not just with our students, but also their parents. The start of the new school year brought opportunities to welcome new families into community. A number of these families were able to attend OHES because of our needs-based financial aid program. This program is made possible by the generous support of the Diocese, as well as the Southern Oklahoma Memorial Foundation, and the Opportunity Scholarship Fund.

When the School began Spring Break, we knew that things were not going to continue smoothly. The faculty spent their Break preparing material for our move to what we called Owl Distance Learning. Some very quick professional development took place, so our teachers were comfortable with using Zoom for classes. The silver-lining to the need to work through Spring Break was that no one was missing out on anything exciting. No-where was open – shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions were closed, and cruises were cancelled. The disruption to “normal” had well and truly started.

Towards the end of the first three weeks of Owl Distance Learning, we reviewed what we were doing and what modifications were needed. ODL 2.0 included introducing small group and individual Zoom sessions for students and their teachers, as well as asynchronistic recordings for art, Music, physical education, and technology.

I am so very proud of the professionalism shown by the School’s faculty & staff during the 44 days of distance learning. Hats off to all our teachers. I would especially mention the teachers of Early Childhood. This division of three and four year olds has so much energy at the best of times; but with distance learning, it was like herding cats…while they were in different rooms! In addition to moving quickly and effectively to the electronic platform of teaching and learning, teachers were also dealing with the effects of the COVID-19

28

pandemic on their own families, including for some, the need to help their own children with distance learning classes. Our teachers saw the need to not simply let these 44 days be an early summer. It was important to continue a level of forward motion, albeit a disrupted one. An important part of our continued schooling was to give a modicum of normality to the lives of the children. We continued to offer Wednesday Chapel vial Facebook Love, we celebrated our Eighth Grade graduates with a drive-by event and we added bonding activities such as Virtual Friday Night Family Trivia! I believe one of the major factors that contributed to our success with distance learning was that our teachers had already spent time building relationships with their students: that expectations had been established, and the children already knew that they were loved, valued, and respected by their teachers.

A Prayer for Young Persons

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Book of Common Prayer, p.829)

Sadly, our school year finished with a whimper rather than a bang, with the vast majority of activities needing to be cancelled due to the on-going need to be socially distanced from each other. While we were able to Facebook Live a small number of our activities, our community missed out on being together for wonderful classroom and School-wide events such as experiencing the next year’s classes, and our children’s end of year Dinner/Theater production.

The Oak Hall Episcopal School community continues to grow stronger in spite of, or perhaps because of, the disruption and uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To all who have supported the School with resources, suggestions, and prayers, thank you.

Respectfully submitted,

Ken Willy

Headmaster

Report to the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home Tulsa, Oklahoma September 2020

Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home in Tulsa continues its tradition of excellent care and is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year! We are the preferred community for men and women of all faiths who wish to live their later year in an environment of dignity, individuality and the highest level of independence.

Saint Simeon’s currently offers multiple levels of care: Assisted Living, Long Term Care, Skilled Nursing and Rehab, and Memory Care. Saint Simeon’s is home to more than 160 residents and over 200 employees.

Saint Simeon’s is grateful for the guidance and support of the Bishop Ed Konieczny, the Bishop Poulson Reed, and the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. Saint Simeon’s is especially grateful for the continued support of the Diocese. This support has allowed us to cover some increased operational expenses due the temporary suspension of admissions during the pandemic and the additional costs associated with caring for the residents during this time.

In August 2019, Angela Green was selected as the new President and CEO of Saint Simeon’s. She has 16 years of experience in senior living and health care specializing in operations management, staff training and community development. Angela served as the Administrator of Saint Simeon’s prior to accepting this new role, and she loves Saint Simeon’s and being a part of its powerful mission and ministry.

30

Saint Simeon’s has continued to grow the Parkinson’s program that was originally started in early 2017. The community currently serves twelve Parkinson’s residents who receive specific services through expertly trained staff. These services range from one‐on‐one exercise sessions to customize medication programs. The residents enjoy weekly aquatic classes in the warm water pool which enables them to move more freely.

The Parkinson’s Foundation of Oklahoma has an office on the Saint Simeon’s campus, and through this partnership with the Parkinson’s Foundation, Saint Simeon’s offers more services to our residents as well as people throughout eastern Oklahoma. Saint Simeon’s is the main location for support groups, educational seminars and wellness programs focused on Parkinson’s patients and their family members.

The community also provides Skilled Memory Care which allows people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease the opportunity to receive skilled therapy and nursing following a qualifying hospital stay. This service is in high demand in the Tulsa market as there are only 4 facilities in Oklahoma that are licensed for this type of care.

Saint Simeon’s is also a proud member of Dementia Friendly Tulsa and a sponsor of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s annual fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The 24th Annual Western Days was held September 15, 2020 in a unique format due to the pandemic – a video premiere. The theme was “Cheers to 60 Years” and honored the Heroes and Saints of Saint Simeon’s. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Western Days Steering Committee and the generous donations of many, the event exceeded its fundraising goal and raised $700,000!
