  • BTTF Analysis
i Back To The Future: An Analysis Of The Score Back To The Future opened on July 3rd, 1985, and became one the the most popular and successful films of that year, earning over $197 million in domestic U.S. box office alone. It brought instant recognition to both director Robert Zemeckis and composer Alan Silvestri. Prior to that year, Silvestri had composed music for many popular television shows such as Starsky And Hutch (1978-79) and CHiPs (1978-83), and some feature films including The Doberman Gang (1972) and Las Vegas Lady (1975). Silvestri's percussive and driving rhythmic approach to scoring CHiPs caught the attention of filmmaker Zemeckis, which led to their first collaboration in 1984, Romancing The Stone. Today their partnership continues, having produced such notable films as Back To The Future Parts II and III, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Forrest Gump, Contact, and The Polar Express. Silvestri's score to Back To The Future features two main themes that appear together and separately at key moments throughout (Fig. 1a and 1b). Both ideas are often orchestrated for trumpets and horns, and found in cues such as 4m1 '85 Twin Pines Mall or 8m1 Skateboard Chase. They underscore moments of triumph that our hero Marty McFly encounters, and even a clever interpolation in 11m2c Earth Angel Overlay. In the first theme, Silvestri makes significant use of the lydian mode, a diatonic major scale with a raised fourth pitch. The raised pitch in question is the third note of the theme (E in Fig. 1a); it is one of the most striking sounds in the score because it creates a direct and unexpected motion towards the next, fourth pitch of the theme (F in Fig.

  • Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)”—The Penguins (1954) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)”—The Penguins (1954) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell The Penguins Original 45 label It is, perhaps, the quintessential doo-wop song. Though it was not the first song in the genre, nor its first “hit,” “Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)” by the Penguins (DooTone 348; 1954), certainly defines the musical style as much as anything before or since. Doo-wop has been defined as: “a subcategory of vocal group harmony that includes the following musical qualities: group harmony, a wide range of vocal parts, nonsense syllables, a simple beat, light instrumentation, and simple music and lyrics.” Like most codified musical styles, “doo-wop” has its origins in a variety of other genres. Certainly it has its origins in rhythm and blues and black gospel. Traces of doo-wop can also be heard in the music of the Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers, whose heydays were during the Big Band era of the 1930s and ‘40s. And, of course, there’s a “scat” element to doo-wop as well, indicating a strong jazz influence. Doo-wop was born in city ghettos among black youths, who practiced their vocal art in gymnasiums and on street corners, communally using their voices to take the place of musical instruments they either couldn’t afford or didn’t know how to play. The emphasis on vocal dynamics has remained doo-wop’s one consistent factor. The era of doo-wop is usually considered to be from 1953 to 1963 and was filled with records recorded by groups often with one-word names like the Orioles, the Miracles, the Chordettes as well was dozens of others usually named after musical terms, birds or automobiles (the Monotones, the Swallows and the Fleetwoods, et.al.).

  • Music Therapy Master Song Resource List
University of Kansas Music Therapy Song Repertoire Resource List Spring 2021 The KU music therapy song repertoire resource list acts as a reference for music therapy students as they work to develop a diverse repertoire of songs for use in their musical, pre-clinical, and clinical work. As such, it is a both a document of important songs that have historically been used in music therapy processes, and a living, breathing document that will be updated intermittently to maintain the dynamic of new musics. Songs are categorized and divided into music genres. Genres provide some level of diversity. Current genres in the book are provided as a general list on page 2, and then each genre is presented alphabetically, with songs in each genre also presented alphabetically. This approach helps to make finding songs easier. Some songs will be cross-referenced. Each song will include either an original artist or the song’s author (or both), as well as the year the song was written. This list can help students learn more songs, not only for singing and accompaniment purposes, but also for using recordings of songs when appropriate. Students are strongly encouraged to locate and listen to original recordings of songs to help their learning processes. Original notation in lead sheets is also helpful, especially for students that excel in reading. A good ear and solid music reading skills help for music therapists to be efficient in their learning of new songs. Also, looking up the history of a song helps a clinician make important decisions on how the music may connect with a client, increasing the potential for its effective use.

A GENERAL NOTE ABOUT SCENE NUMBERING The scene numbering in this script contains large blocks of “reserved” numbers for the following reason: Every time we travel to a different time period (except for the 1985 prologue), the scene numbers jump to a new 3-digit number, as follows: 1 — 7: 1985 Prologue 8 — 61: 2015 201 — 238: “Biff 198" 300 — 386: 1955 501 — 578: 1888 701 — 713: 1985 This is intended to make breakdowns easier because simply by looking at a scene number, you can tell what time period we are in.
