Pulselli, Riccardo M. Pulselli, Nicoletta Patrizi and Nadia Marchettini ABSTRACT The paper presents the results of a project on the Province of Florence (Italy), investigating the availability and use of water resources by emergy evaluation. The study is devoted to the analysis of the watershed of the Sieve River, tributary of River Arno that feeds Florence and its surroundings. Along the river an artificial basin has been created by means of the Bilancino dam to preserve water quantity and quality, and to protect the Florentine area from dangerous periodical inundations. Different specific emergies of water can be identified along the course of the river, especially before and after the Bilancino dam. The aqueduct system of the province of Florence is fed by several rivers and torrents. Here we consider Stura, Sieve and Arno rivers. It is fragmented and divided into many subsystems, slightly interacting with each other.

Exposition - documents from the archive of Scuola Normale Superiore Presented by: Alberto Lusiani - Physics researcher at SNS Maddalena Taglioli - Head archivist at SNS Chiara Visentin – SNS Student, Virtual Immersion in Science Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa was formally founded in 1810, by a Napoleonic decree which dealt with “places of public instruction” in Tuscany, part of the French empire since 1807 and referred to as the departments of Arno, Ombrone and Mediterraneo in the terminology used in revolutionary France at that time. Scuola Normale was to be a subsidiary of École Normale Supérieure of Paris, granting 25 publicly funded places, for students in the humanities and sciences. Scuola Normale began operating in 1813 and only for one year, as in April 1814 Napoleon was forced to abdicate. “Normale” refers to the mission of the school, which was to train middle and high school teachers able to convey “norms” in a context where training teachers was connected to “forming” citizens loyal to the laws and the emperor. Scuola Normale and École Normale did not initially have the denomination “Superiore / Supérieure”. In France, after the institution of the “Écoles Normales primaries” in 1845, the School was denominated “École Normale Supérieure”. In 1846, the grand duke of Tuscany, Leopold III, established the “Scuola Normale Toscana”, also called the “ Scuola Normale of the Imperial Reign” - as it was then connected to the “Theoretical and Practical” Austro-Hungarian system – designed “to train teachers and masters for secondary schools”. After the Italian unifcation, the “Scuola Normale of the Kingdom of Italy” was formally established in 1862.

BOLLETTINO DI GEOFISICA TEORICA ED APPLICATA VOL. 45, N. 1-2, PP. 35-49; MAR.-JUN. 2004 Between Tevere and Arno. A preliminary revision of seismicity in the Casentino-Sansepolcro (Tuscany, Italy) area V. C ASTELLI Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Milano, Italy (Received December 2, 2003; accepted April 27, 2004) “An ill-favoured thing sir, but mine own.” (Wm. Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act V, Sc. 4) Abstract - According to the current Italian catalogue only a few minor earthquakes are located in the Tuscan portion of the Apennines lying between the seismogenic areas of Mugello (north) and Upper Valtiberina (south) and roughly corresponding to the historical district of Casentino. The existence of a seismic gap in this area has been conjectured but, as there is no definite geological explanation for a lack of energy release, the gap could also be an information one, due either to a lack of sources recording past earthquakes or even to a lack of previous seismological studies specifically dealing with the Casentino. A preliminary historical investigation improves the perception of local seismicity by recovering the memory of a few long-forgotten earthquakes. 1. Introduction The Casentino is a historical Tuscan district defined by the upper courses of the rivers Arno and Tevere; it includes a wide valley, through which the Arno flows in its earliest tract and which is bordered westward by the Pratomagno hill range and eastward by a section of the Apennines chain reaching southward to Sansepolcro and the Upper Valtiberina (Fig. 1). Though the Casentino lies between two well-known seismogenic areas (Mugello and Upper Valtiberina) no important earthquakes are located there according to the current Italian catalogue (Gruppo di Lavoro CPTI, 1999); the area is believed to be an obscure trait of the so-called Etrurian Fault System (Lavecchia et al., 2000) and the existence of a Casentino seismic gap was also Corresponding author: V.

  • Detecting Provenance Variations and Cooling Patterns Within the Western Alpine Orogen Through 40Ar/39Ar Geochronology on Detrita
Geological Society of America Special Paper 378 2004 Detecting provenance variations and cooling patterns within the western Alpine orogen through 40Ar/ 39Ar geochronology on detrital sediments: The Tertiary Piedmont Basin, northwest Italy B. Carrapa* J. Wijbrans* G. Bertotti* Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Faculteit der Aardwetenschappen, De Boelelaan 1085, 1081HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands ABSTRACT The Tertiary Piedmont Basin is a synorogenic basin located on the internal side of the Western Alps. Because of its key position, the Tertiary Piedmont Basin represents an important record of processes occurring in the Alpine retrowedge for over the last 30 m.y. 40Ar/39Ar geochronology has been applied to detrital white micas as a prov- enance tool and to derive information on cooling and exhumation patterns within the surrounding orogen. The age distribution in the detritus shows that in the Oligocene the clastic sediments were fed mainly from a southern source area (Ligurian Alps) that widely records high pressure (HP) Alpine metamorphism (40–50 Ma) and, in part, Variscan metamorphism (ca. 320 Ma). From the Miocene, the main source area gradually moved from the south to a western Alpine provenance characterized by strong Late Cretaceous (70 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (120 Ma) signals. This enlarge- ment in the source is likely linked to an evolution of the main paleodrainage system into the basin. From the Serravallian, Variscan ages reappear; this is attributed to the exposure of the Argentera Massif as a new source for the Tertiary Piedmont Basin. The lack of thermal overprinting of the main detrital signals through time suggests that the western Alpine orogen has been regulated by episodic fast cooling and exhu- mation events followed by periods of slower erosion.

FOREWORD Dear Cyclists, Discovering Europe on a bicycle – the Rhine Cycle Route makes it possible. It runs from the Alps to a North Sea beach and on its way links Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. This guide will point the way. Within the framework of the EU-funded “Demarrage” project, the Rhine Cycle Route has been trans- formed into a top tourism product. For the first time, the whole course has been signposted from the source to the mouth. Simply follow the EuroVelo15 symbol. The Rhine Cycle Route is also the first long distance cycle path to be certified in accordance with a new European standard. Testers belonging to the German ADFC cyclists organisation and the European Cyclists Federation have examined the whole course and evaluated it in accordance with a variety of criteria. This guide is another result of the European cooperation along the Rhine Cycle Route. We have broken up the 1233-kilometre course up into 13 sections and put together cycle-friendly accom- modation, bike stations, tourist information and sightseeing attractions – the basic package for an unforgettable cycle touring holiday.
