A Black Jack Use from the Old Capitol Prison By Patricia A. Kaufmann United States and Confederacy Issue Stamp with Same Portrait The United States two-cent Black Jack (Scott 73), shown in Figure 1, is a popular stamp with U.S. collectors and has been the basis of more than one important collection, as well as many articles and even books. Collectors of Confederate postal history are equally interested in this issue, although it is seldom encountered on Confederate mail. The earliest recorded use of the Black Jack is July 1, 1863, on an off-cover stamp and July 6, 1863, on cover.1 By that July 1, 1863, date the Civil War had been raging for more than two years and it would be less than two years until Gen. A “cover” is the wrapping around a posted letter o The term originated from the early practice of covering a letter by folding a separate sheet around it both to protect it and keep contents confidential. o The term is interchangeable with envelope. o It may also refer to an outer folded lettersheet. You’ll never remember your questions at the end. 2 South Carolina Secedes For the purposes of Confederate postal history, specialized collectors begin with the secession of South Carolina from the Union on December 20, 1860. 3 First Day of the Confederate States First Day of the Confederacy cover postmarked Montgomery, Alabama, where the Confederate Government was officially formed on February 4, 1861, by the first states to secede from the Union. 4 Civil Cooperation Early in the Conflict When the new Confederate government was established in February 1861, there was no Confederate Post Office Department.Itwas not established until February 21, 1861. Confederate Postmaster General John Henninger Reagan was appointed March 6th. In the meantime, the U.S. continued to provide postal service in the seceded states with U.S. postage rates in effect. PMG Reagan encouraged Southern postmasters to fully cooperate with the USPOD. Confederate postage rates did not go into effect until June 1, 1861. Confederate Postmaster General John H.     “Andrew Jackson and the 2¢ Black Jacks” The objective of this exhibit is to show many aspects of the subject of the Black Jack stamp, Andrew Jackson. The exhibit consists of 4 frames, the first of which shows Andrew Jackson related pieces and Black Jack stamps, including a few gem rarity pieces. Frame two examines plate numbers, two famous shifts, bisect usage and the start of examining domestic covers. Frame three continues review of domestic uses including some postal stationary, z-grills, railroad, advertising, selvage margin stamped covers, valentines, and sanitary fairs. Frame four takes the subject abroad and examines foreign covers, a review of a Ship Bill of Sale, and concludes with a great political satire cover drawn by Thomas Nast and is known as the “Black John”. When you are looking thru this exhibit, think about the fact that there were over 350,000,000 Black Jack stamps produced. Review and appreciate some of the rarities presented here today: 1 of 2. 1 of 5. 1 of 27. 1 of 41. Some truly magnificent pieces. Items bordered in Red are considered rare. Items double bordered in Red are truly masterpieces in the world of philately. Part I by Jeff Lough Croweburg Mining Camp Crawford County Railroad map circa 1890 Coal was heavily mined in Crawford County, Kansas. At one point 30% of the coal mined in the United States came from an area covering a third of Crawford County and some of the northwestern part of Cherokee County to the south. There were almost 300 coal mines and surface locations where coal was found. Croweburg was one of the many Crawford county towns that developed with the coal mining industry and was a station on the Joplin & Pittsburg electric railroad line. Nowadays Croweburg is only a street sign along a black top and about 4 homes. It was west of Arcadia. Croweburg's first post master was Isaac Dennis. A post office was opened in Croweburg in 1908 and remained in operation until 1972. The accompanying holiday wishes post card, addressed to a young lady in another Crawford County community, Englevale, a small unincorporated community a little to the southwest of Croweburg. Englevale was named for Dan Engle, the original owner of the town site.
