Did you know that the speed limit for the entire length of Riverdale Avenue is 30km/h? To encourage traffic to slow down, flex-sticks have been installed in several strategic spots: on the centre line and on each side of the road. These traffic- calming measures were implemented this summer to slow vehicles on this otherwise very wide street.

Remembering a recycling anniversary By Shehryar Sarwar

Forty summers ago, this community celebrated the first anniversary of Ottawa’s recycling program, contemplated the construction of dykes along a part of the river bank, and reflected on the scourge of intolerance and racism.

Anti-racism Ottawa Centre MP John Evans wrote about the “resurgence of extremist and racist groups in our country” in a piece eerily relevant to the era in which we now find ourselves. Acknowledging the diverse backgrounds of Canadians and the importance of tolerance and respect, he described a three- phase anti-racism program to be “about 5,000 average-sized “sturdy one-speed bicycle with Shehryar Sarwar is a resident of rolled out by the Department of homes.” Mayor Marion Dewar was balloon tires” for winter-time OOS and an OSCA Board member. ENVIRONMENT Looking at trees in a whole new way Also, geography and environmental studies students will do their “field camp” in conjunction with the inventory to help with the work but also give us, according to Dr. John Milton, “a snapshot of resident attitudes toward the woods and ways to diversify it.” At the time of this writing, we are poised to start the hard part: looking at every tree in our neighbourhood, measuring it, and judging its status. All this has made me look at those trees in a new way. For the first time, I’ve noticed hackberry, hickory, and ironwood trees in our parks. I am reluctant to step on roots and notice when the tree hasn’t been planted properly. I worry about the need to plant street trees under hydro lines and mourn the loss of branches on As Andy Kenney told us during our training session, “We’re all part of the urban forest.” How we look at and treat a windy day. WINDSOR PARK Windsor Pups park cleanup up and running once again By Jean-Benoit Lanca

On Saturday July 3rd, over 20 members of the Windsor Pups dog walking group, along with City of Ottawa lifeguards and local Douvris Martial arts parents, participated in the park cleanup. The City of Ottawa sponsored cleanup was the first time since the pandemic that local dog walkers and their pups gathered in small family units to give a little back to the community and the park that provides them with so much. It is often too easy to take for granted that which we have closest to us. The Windsor Pups took time to highlight the importance of our beautiful park and give it a little facelift by collecting rubbish, sticks, and debris. The message was clear, we (dogs and their families) love our park and this is how we look after each other. The event was a huge success. We look forward to making this biannual event bigger and better. Please feel free to join (Above) Rachel Radmore. DECLUTTERING TIPS & TRICKS Getting started By Martha Tobin

Decluttering is a daunting task at the best of times and you’re the feelings of being overwhelmed may be holding you back from beginning. Here are 5 tips to help get you started:

1. Start with one room at a time and focus on one section of that room. I recommend starting with the surfaces and removing all items from these surfaces (i.e. desk or counter top). 2. If you find items that belong in other rooms, just put them in a box labelled ‘other rooms’ and continue to stay in and on track with the room you are working on. 3. For each item on these surfaces, determine if you still use it. For items no longer used, put them in a box labelled ‘to give,’ ‘to sell’ or ‘trash.’ 4. For those items that you are keeping, ask yourself about their frequency of use. Prime real estate in that room is for items used hourly and daily (so placed within arm’s reach) while weekly and monthly items can be within standing or walking distance respectively. 5. Once the surfaces of the room are decluttered, then pick another section of that room (i.e. drawers or cupboards) and repeat the above process.

By tackling decluttering one room at a time, you will not only see progress but that progress will keep you motivated to declutter other rooms.

TRAVEL Why would anyone want to live on Entry Island? By Elaine Kenney

In June 2010, I went from Montreal up the St. Lawrence on a CTMA Cruise to the Magdalen Islands. The Magdalens are an archipelago of about 12 islands and islet, part of Québec and situated in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Once the cruise ship was moored at the Magdalens, a local tour took us to seven of the eight main islands, many of which are connected by narrow bands of sand dunes. From one island, Ile du Havre-aux-Maisons, our guide pointed to Entry Island and explained that it is a small English- speaking community of fishermen of A picturesque scene on Entry Island.
