NPR Choice page T o the outsider, gambling can seem like a purely acquisitive pursuit, a fast route to riches that bypasses all the hard work. Gamblers are nothing more than exceptionally lazy capitalists, investing in the vagaries of chance rather than industry, but sharing the same hunger for risk and instant wealth. As such, it can surely only appeal to the greedily materialistic. Lawrence Osborne 's new novel, his second following 's debut The Forgivenseems to pose The Ballad of a Small Player counterargument, that the impulse to gamble comes not from the desire to accumulate wealth, but rather to shed it. As Osborne's protagonist remarks, "Everyone knows you're not a real player until you secretly prefer losing. Known mostly as Lord Doyle, though in fact he is the son of a vacuum cleaner salesman from Croydon the first of many Graham Greene ish touches in this novelhe has more reason than most to want to shed The Ballad of a Small Player wealth. It is loaded with the guilt of ill-gotten gains. As a lawyer back in England, he fleeced an elderly widow; now he has fled the country, hiding out in Macau, mainland China's Las Vegas, across the bay from Hong Kong. It is a game of no skill or strategy, the card-game equivalent of tossing a coin. But Doyle cares little for winning or losing. His life seems given over to the laws of chance, as though he were trying to gamble himself out of existence. He is not an immediately likable character. When we first meet him he is playing against a woman and relishes the prospect of "skinning her alive". First there is the character known as Grandma, wife of a tycoon, who with her limitless reserves of capital is equally indifferent to winning, and seeks her thrills by annihilating the wealth of others. She is attracted, so she claims, to the anti-gambler that Doyle has almost become. The beauty of this novel is in the elegance and precision of its prose, which renders the glaring The Ballad of a Small Player of Macau into a series of exquisite miniatures, and draws The Ballad of a Small Player Osborne's reserves as a travel writer. Resonant of classics by Dostoevsky and Graham Greene, The Ballad of a Small Player is a timeless tale steeped in eerie suspense and rich atmosphere. The decisions they make seem connected to the thrilling and terrifying changes taking place The Ballad of a Small Player them. Old ways collide with a brash new world, and in this game, it is not yet clear which will emerge the winner. The Ballad of a Small Player is a layered work, a novel about addiction, love and class but given an allusive face by the way it perches constantly on some supernatural brink. This is a lean book that moves like a panther. Even better, Mr. Osborne has a keen and sometimes cruel eye for humans and their manners and morals, and for the natural world. You can open to almost any page and find brutally fine observations…. The Ballad of a Small Player holds the book together, and makes all the bits of plot machinery feel new again…. There are enough ways to read the book that one finishes it and immediately wants to start it again. A gripping read with moral ambiguity galore. Osborne has done an extraordinary job of capturing moral complexity, never letting his characters or his readers off easy. Highly recommended. In his elegant and incisive second novel, travel-journalist Osborne hauntingly captures this exposed essence in all its inscrutable mystery and dispassionate brutishness. His prose is gorgeous and precise; the story slices keenly through the exotic haze of its setting. A beautiful, compelling book to savor line by line. When you buy a book, we donate a book. Sign in. 4/21/2019 Grab your ear buds: Here are three great audiobooks to distract you from reality - The Washington Post The Washington Post Books Review Grab your ear buds: Here are three great audiobooks to distract you from reality By Katherine A. Powers February 12 The Current Past and present merge in “The Current,” Tim Johnston’s atmospheric, exquisitely suspenseful novel of two murders separated by 10 years. Audrey’s friend, Caroline, is driving her from their Southern college up to Minnesota, where Audrey’s father, a former sheriff, is dying. On the way, the young women narrowly escape violent molestation by two louts in an Iowan gas station — only to have their car maliciously bumped onto the fragile ice of the Black Root River, under which runs a powerful current. Tragedy ensues. Ten years earlier, up in Audrey’s hometown, a young woman was drowned in the same river. The two episodes develop into an increasingly interwoven mesh of victims, suspects, motives, revenge and grief. Audrey, a determined sleuth, is intent on getting to the bottom of both incidents. Sarah Mollo-Christensen delivers the general narration in a low, gentle voice, modulating her tones unobtrusively to capture the dialogue among the characters. This is a masterly performance of a first-rate thriller, one that completely dissolves the barrier between story and listener. (HighBridge, Unabridged, 14½ hours) The Forgiven Lawrence Osborne’s 2012 novel “The Forgiven” — a tale of clashing cultures, mutual misunderstanding and death set in Morocco — is finally available as an audiobook. David Henniger is an alcoholic London society doctor; his wife, Jo, is a blocked writer.

Peter A. Jackson coined the epigrammatic term “regime of images” to discuss how appearances are widely monitored and policed within the country; among others, he quotes the earlier scholarly work of Rosalind Morris, who wrote of Thai modernity’s “overinvestment in appearances” and Penny Van Esterik’s claims for “The real is hidden and unchallenged. The surface is taken for real.”1 To this we can add more recent references such as Koompong Noobanjong’s The Aesthetics of Power: Architecture, Modernity, and Identity from Siam to Thailand and Philip Cornwel-Smith’s Very Thai: Everyday Popular Culture.2 Koompong traced the way in which historical meanings of Thailand’s major architecture have been inscribed and re-inscribed by successive administrations and military juntas as a means of avowing authority rather than the coherence of political ideologies these forms would otherwise serve.

Notes and References Caveat: The Dangers of Behavioral Biology The contents of this book are known to be dangerous. I do not mean that in the sense that all ideas are potentially dangerous. Specifically, ideas about the biological basis of behavior have encouraged political tendencies and movements later regretted by all decent people and condemned in school histories. Why, then, purvey such ideas? Because some ideas in behavioral biology are true—among them, to the best of my knowledge, the ones in this book—and the truth is essential to wise action. But that does not mean that these ideas cannot be distorted, nor that evil acts cannot arise from them. I doubt, in fact, that what I say can prevent such distortion. Political and social movements arise from worldly causes, and then seize whatever congenial ideas are at hand. Nonethe- less, I am not comfortable in the company of scientists who are content to search for the truth and let the consequences accumulate as they may. I therefore recount here a few pas- sages in the dismal, indeed shameful history of the abuse of behavioral biology, in some of which scientists were willing participants. The first episode is recounted in William Stanton’s The Leopard’s Spots: Scientific Atti- tudes Toward Race in America, 1815–59 (Chicago: University of Chicago, 1960). Such names as Samuel George Morton, George Robins Gliddon, and Josiah Clark Nott mean little to present-day students of anthropology, but in the difficult decades between the death of Jeffer- son and the Civil War, they founded the American School of Anthropology.
