River Rock Casino Announces the Winners of the Canadian Championship Finals

Richmond, B.C. (November 16, 2016) – River Rock Casino Resort is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2016 Canadian Mahjong Championship Finals is Mr. Woon Fai Wong who took home more than $14,000 in prizes along with the coveted title of 2016 Canadian Mahjong Champion.

On Nov. 12 and 13, River Rock Casino Resort hosted the Canadian Championship Finals where players competed for a chance to advance to the Series of Mahjong Main Event Finals which will be held at early next year.

Wong is the first place winner while Louisa Lau came in second place and Jeffrey Chan secured third place. As ’s top three winners, Wong, Lau and Chan have guaranteed their spots in the main tournament in Macao where they will test their luck and show their impressive mahjong skills. The World Series of Mahjong Tournament has an estimated prize pool of $500,000 and attracts players from around the world.

Mahjong originated in China during the Qing dynasty and is played all over the world in a variety of forms and rules particularly throughout . Similar to the rummy, mahjong most closely represents a , strategy and calculation with a degree of chance. The game is played with tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols.
