OPENING HYMN “Another Year is Dawning” tune: Aurelia

Another year is dawning: Dear Father, let it be, In working or in waiting another year with Thee; Another year of progress, Another year of praise, another year of proving Thy presence all the days.

Another year of mercies, Of faithfulness and grace; Another year of gladness in the shining of Thy face; Another year of leaning upon Thy loving breast; Another year of trusting, of quiet, happy rest.

Another year of service, Of witness for Thy love; Another year of training For holier work Above. Another year is dawning: Dear Father, let it be, On earth or else in Heaven, Another year for Thee.

BAPTISMAL REMEMBRANCE Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: With the washing of water and these words, God called us out of darkness into His marvelous light, forgave our sins, and made us members of His family. Hear the Word of the Lord concerning Holy Baptism.

BAPTISMAL READING Romans 6:3-11 (All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death.)

All: Don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be

3 slaves to sin–because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Pastor: In Holy Baptism our sins are forgiven and we are granted a new life in Christ, our Lord. We solemnly renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways; we confess the gift of faith in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I ask you, as a reaffirmation of what God has done for you in your baptism, do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways? People: I do renounce them.

Pastor: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty? People: Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son? People: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? People: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Pastor: Is it your earnest intention to continue steadfast in this faith and in the promise of your Baptism, and as a member of the Church, to be diligent in the use of the means of grace and prayer? People: Yes, with the help of God.

4

Pastor: Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting. People: Amen.

[Please be seated]

HYMN OF PRAISE “Arise, Your Light is Come!” (WR231) vs 1,4

Arise, your light is come! The Spirit’s call obey; Show forth the glory of your God which shines on you today.

Arise, your light is come! The mountains burst in song! Rise up like eagles on the wing, God’s power will make us strong.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Pastor: Let us pray. People: Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You proclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized in His name faithful to their calling as Your children and heirs with Him of everlasting life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE WORD OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 42:1-9 Reader: The Old Testament Reading for the Baptism of Our Lord is from Isaiah chapter 42.

Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the LORD, who

5 created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: “I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM Psalm 29 Reader: We read responsively from Psalm 29.

Reader: Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. People: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.

Reader: The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. People: The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

Reader: The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. People: He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.

Reader: The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire. People: The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

6

Reader: The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” People: The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.

Reader: May the LORD give strength to his people! People: May the LORD bless his people with peace!

EPISTLE Romans 6:1-11 Reader: The Epistle is from the 6th chapter of Romans.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Reader: This is Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 3:13-17 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the third chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized,

7 immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ.

PRAYERS Pastor: Gracious Father, since You have committed to us the ministry of intercession, we call on You to hear the prayers of Your people. Teach us to bring all our concerns to You, and strengthen us to acknowledge and submit to Your will. Show us your ways, O Lord, People: and teach us Your paths.

Pastor: Hear our prayers, O God, for all the people of the world. Where there is war and conflict, grant peace and safety for those seeking to do Your will, especially our brave service members, and the guidance necessary to bring the bloodshed to a beneficial conclusion. Where there is persecution and terrorism, grant comfort and hope. Where the Gospel is being proclaimed, grant it free course to the glory of Your name. Where there is famine and shortage of the necessities of life, grant Your providence, and move Your people to share with generosity the blessings You have given. Show us Your ways, O Lord, People: and teach us Your paths.

11

Pastor: Hear our prayers, O God, for all who are in need. Grant healing according to Your good will to those whom we have lifted up to You previously Father, and those most recently in need of healing. For each of these children of Yours who look to You for courage and strength, bless them with a special measure of faith. Show us Your ways, O Lord, People: and teach us Your paths.

SACRAMENT The Lord's Supper is a gracious gift instituted by Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a means of receiving God’s grace. We believe that in the holy supper, the true body and blood of the Savior, along with the bread and wine, comes to us. We are encouraged by Jesus to commune frequently and God tells us through St. Paul that we must examine ourselves in preparation for a worthy reception of the sacrament. This includes a confession of our sins, a proclamation of our faith, and a determination to lead a more godly life in the

12

future. If you also acknowledge your sinfulness and your need for a Savior, and recognize Christ’s physical presence in the bread and wine, we invite you to join us at the Lord’s table. NOTE: If you have a physical condition that would prohibit you from taking wine in the Lord’s Supper, a few individual cups of white grape juice, instead of wine, are placed in the center of each communion tray for you. For those with a gluten allergy we now provide gluten-free wafers. Please help yourself to the gluten-free wafers located in the center of the tray.

PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION Pastor: Brothers and sisters, since it is our intention to come before the altar of the Lord to receive the very body and blood of Jesus Christ in this blessed Sacrament, let us confess our sins to God, our merciful Father.

(Silence for personal confession)

Pastor: Almighty God, People: Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We have turned away from You in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We have done the evil You forbid and have not done the good You demand. We do repent and are truly sorry for these our sins. Have mercy on us, kind Father, because of the obedience of our brother, Jesus Christ, Your Son. Forgive us all that is past, and with the power of the Holy Spirit move us to serve You faithfully.

Pastor: God is gracious and merciful, and for the sake of Jesus Christ He hears our prayer for forgiveness. It is a joy as your ordained servant of the Word, and at the command of our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, to forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

13 PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. People: It is right and proper for us to do so.

SANCTUS Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full, full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me."

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Pastor: Lord Jesus Christ, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

14

LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

We have Small Groups located throughout the Villages, at Trinity South, and in the Stonecrest and Del Webb communities that are open and in need of additional participants. TLC “Veterans Helping Others” is an off-shoot of Trinity’s Barnabas chapter. The idea is to help others with simple tasks around the home that, because of physical challenges, they are unable to do. Examples would be a changing a light bulb where a ladder is needed, moving an appliance or sofa, etc. There are many others where a contractor is not needed but basic do-it-yourself skills will suffice. We need members of the congregation whom we can call on when a request is made. All tasks will be done by appointment at the convenience of the volunteer and a willingness and ability to perform the help desired. At least 2 people will be involved with all projects. This is a great way reach out to veterans and perform a service that will earn appreciation for Trinity. Please call Nick Bock at 352-470-4577 or the church office at 352- 307-4500 if you are willing to add your name to the list.

BE AN ANGEL! VOLUNTEER FOR THE COFFEE MINISTRY IN FEBRUARY, MARCH, OR APRIL! The sign up sheet is at the coffee station or call Toney Kendrick or Liz Koch. (Liz will be gone January & February so they are trying to complete the schedule early.)

OPERATION SHOEBOX-Once again we have an opportunity to support our troops overseas with more than prayers. Operation Shoebox ships ditty bags to men and women overseas weekly, not just at Christmas. Their supplies vary, but at the moment, they need small hand sanitizers, gum packets (5 stick kind), and juice bottle packets for 8, 12, or 16 oz. water bottles. All of these are available at the Dollar Tree, etc. Check donations for postage made out to Operation Shoebox and left with the church office are greatly appreciated. It costs at least $40 a box to ship overseas. There is a cart in Classroom 4 marked Operation Shoebox for donations. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP NOTE––“But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”- Matthew 3:15 The reason God sent His Son into the world is to fulfill all righteousness for us, to do what we could not do. So here Jesus plunges Himself into our sins and soaks them up in His Baptism, so that in our Baptism we might be cleansed and renewed. The whole of Jesus’ life, everything He did and said, was one great offering to the Father in our stead to fulfill all righteousness for us. All our offerings back to our Lord are in thanksgiving for this one great, true offering.

LUTHERAN HOUR MINISTRIES -is dedicated to the billions of people around the world still unreached with the Gospel message, our work is not done. What can YOU do to let others know about Jesus Christ? Check out the Lutheran Hour Ministries website at www.lhm.org for the many resources available.

PROJECT CONNECT- PLEASE TAKE ONE – Project Connect booklets are one of the many resources on a variety of topics available through Lutheran Hour Ministries. Come visit the booklet display in the narthex and help yourself! - sponsored by Board of Evangelism

29 WERE YOU AWARE? Many folks are not aware of federal privacy laws that have been in force for a few years now. No longer are hospitals allowed to contact your church when you are admitted, due to privacy issues. Often, when you are admitted, you will be asked the church you attend. This is for the purpose of identifying denominational affiliation, which is forwarded to the hospital chaplains. They will not contact our pastor or church office. So please, if you are admitted to the hospital, call the church office to let us know. If it is a planned admittance, do not hesitate to contact us in advance. We want to be at your bedside in your time of need for prayer and spiritual care.

FLAGS FOR FALLEN VETS: I have been contacted by Flags for Fallen Vets to form a team to place flags at Florida National Cemetery for Memorial Day. Flags are placed the Sunday before Memorial Day, May 24th, and are picked up the following Saturday, May 30th.If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected].

FOR A CHUCKLE- “A children’s Sunday school teacher encouraged her five year old students to create an art masterpiece related to the Bible. As she wandered around the room looking at the pictures, she came to Alice. “Alice, what are you drawing?” “I’m drawing God.” “But no one knows what God looks like, Alice.” Without missing a beat, Alice replied, “They will when I’m finished.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK- “Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.”

Christianity is the only religion of the world to insist that reconciliation with the creator cannot ever be accomplished by our performance. Only through the revelation of a Savior, who would be the substitute for all of our wrongdoing and make us right with God, can we finally overcome our sense of separation from the Almighty.

This is a gift and promise of life that we rejoice in and share with Christians around the world. We share with all Christians the desire that everyone would come to know Jesus and experience a life under “new management” – the grace and purpose of God.

Trinity is a member of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. We enjoy a blessed confessional heritage of Biblical Christianity with over 65 million Lutherans around the world and over 7 million Lutherans in the U.S. alone. What we know and believe comes only from the Bible, which is God’s inspired Word. While the Bible is certainly our guide for holy living, the primary purpose of the Bible is to reveal Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

We believe every Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church is a “little Easter”, a celebration of the resurrection of our Lord. We celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper every Sunday in both worship services. We believe the forgiveness and strength of faith we are promised through receiving the very body and blood of Christ is so greatly needed by all of God’s people, for we are truly a community of wounded healers. For a Christian Church to be anything else than a place of common fellowship and unity and a source of strength for our fragile faith is to fail its God-ordained purpose and intent.

Our pastors would like to be of service to you in any way they can. Feel free to call the church office or speak with Pastor Dan or Pastor Blair directly if you wish to find out more about the church or have more personal needs of a spiritual nature.
